Just a heads up — those who are having to use "ipconfig / flushdns" have most likely a misconfigured browser which is not set to purge tell-tale tracks, on browser shutdown.

Might I suggest the BetterPrivacy addon to remove flash cookies? You can add it to the clear history setting dialog as well as delete it on startup, on certain time interval and by hot-key by changing the BetterPrivacy options. Most importantly, you can white-list flash cookie you wish to keep and it can also notify you when new flash cookie is stored.

Firemin Debunked

"Reducing The Firefox Memory-hogging Dramatically"

It seems to have "not worked" for just a couple of Peeps — for the rest of us here, Firemin is doing an appreciably great job.

BTW, the folks you linked-up at those 2 ancient topics, did not have the benefit of the tutorial in your quote.

Thanks Cereberus — appreciate the heads up. :)

Is there anyone who couldn't get the registry at the following working — we may need to take corrective measure?

"Preventing IDM From Dialing Home"

@dcs18,

With the help of your informative WFC tut, i installed and began using for first time, and though a noob, thought i was getting the hang of it, except for one problem which is driving me up the wall.

When i try to install any portable, for example qbitorrent from Fuken, i get a wget error.

Looking at WFC popup notification it is WGET.exe, which i allow, but portable fails to install to folder.

Clean up and then try again and get same error and same WFC popup, which again i allow, but still fails.

How do i allow this wget.exe throgh WFC, is there a custom rule i should make?

Be grateful for any guide,

Thanks

The reason for that happening, stringy is that when you use an online portable installer, wget.exe fires from a different path, every time — WFC (rightfully) intercepts wget.exe because there is no matching rule to allow the connection. Unfortunately such a rule cannot be created, either — check out the following outline of the path that wget.exe takes:—

*\users\*\appdata\local\temp\*\downloaded\wget.exe

If you observe the above path closely, you will notice that Fuken has to accommodate 3 different variables which are marked as *

How do i allow this wget.exe throgh WFC, is there a custom rule i should make?

As a workaround, you can try the following steps:—

  1. Download the online portable installer you intend to install.
  2. Close all running apps. & programs — especially the ones (like IDM) which love to call home (anyways, it is always a good idea to take this step before any sort of installation.)
  3. Switch your Windows Firewall Control (WFC) from Medium Filtering to No Filtering — remember your system vulnerable at this point since your Windows Firewall Control (WFC) is down.
  4. Complete your online installation.
  5. Switch back your Windows Firewall Control (WFC) from No Filtering to Medium Filtering — your Windows Firewall Control (WFC) is now protecting you.
  6. Report back. F3h9xqz.gif

BetterPrivacy is one of those truly awesome add-ons for Firefox — splendid, despite not having been updated for years, on end (in fact, one of those few add-ons which do not really need to be updated.) ^_^

FWIW, after I return — shall create a Firefox guide, hoping to include an implementation which allows all the advantages of BetterPrivacy, without having to install the add-on (that is — if I return.)

@dcs18,

Now working, thank you so much.

I could "not see the wood for the trees", so simple, but spent hours looking for the difficult way.

Thanks for taking time to reply.

I prefer to configure the Windows Firewall from the command prompt. It's easier for me to modify for other programs.

I use this to block the 24 IP's provided by dcs18. You must create both an Inbound and an Outbound Application Rule for the application. Copy and paste the two first rules beginning with netsh to the command prompt.

Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe) [Inbound Application Rule]netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe)" dir=in action=allow program="%ProgramFiles(x86)%)\Internet Download Manager\IDMan.exe"Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe) [Outbound Application Rule]netsh advfirewall firewall add rule name="Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe)" dir=out action=block program="%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Download Manager\IDMan.exe" enable=yes remoteip=50.22.78.28,50.22.78.29,50.22.78.31,50.97.41.98,50.97.82.44,69.41.163.49,69.41.163.149,75.125.34.148,75.125.34.157,169.55.0.224,173.255.137.80,173.255.134.84,174.127.73.80,174.127.73.85,174.133.70.98,174.133.70.101,184.173.149.184,184.173.188.104,184.173.188.106,184.173.188.107,202.134.64.74,207.44.199.16,207.44.199.159,207.44.199.165Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe) [Show All Installed Application Rules]netsh advfirewall firewall show rule name="Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe)"Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe) [Remove All Installed Application Rules]netsh advfirewall firewall delete rule name="Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe)"Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe) [Export All Installed Application Rules to a Textfile on the Desktop]netsh advfirewall firewall show rule name="Rule Name: Internet Download Manager (IDM) (IDMan.exe)" > %userprofile%\desktop\IDM_WFW_Rules.txt

shouldn't both rules be Outbound?

Hello i am getting this popup during startup of IDM i find that idm extension isnt proper working with my edge browser (Wind 10 64bt) any help!!

Img >>> http://imgur.com/5EIdGIf

i tried uninstall reinstall.... clean install

As Windows 10 is a newbie on the market, it might take some time regarding compatibility factor across all applications. Wait sometime for a new release from IDM and till then try other (better) browsers to brows the Web.

Windows Firewall Configuration - Truly Block EVERYTHING...

It seems as much as we look into changing, tweaking, etc, there's always more crap phoning home.

I was working on a script, like 1000 others, to block via blacklist, but it has proven futile so far.

So, I'm going to take the approach I use with my browser: Block EVERYTHING by Default unless specified.

We're going to use Windows Firewall and some preconfigured registry, and WFC for our little setup...

@dcs, my apologies, had not seen your similar guide when posted .

Awesome tutorial, worked flawlessly without problem, and the best thing is, no need to rely on 3rd party program, no crack nor keygen needed ^_^

Thank you for OP and everyone who contributed in this guide

You will need to go in droid boot mode. In my asus zenfone 5 I can get there by pressing power button and vol_up button simultaneously until the asus logo appears. You can google for "how to delete partition cache in *your brand* smartphones"

Good luck?
