Important Update!!!

This is to inform interested members who visit this thread that the last Windows Updates on this Patch Tuesday (16th May 2013) was a huge one (approximately 230 MBs.)

You may want to run your icon installer once again to restore the skinning status of your icons.

For the Pros. and the DIYs

Following is the list of 4 system files that were affected by the Windows Updates:-

  • wmploc.dll
  • mplayer.exe
  • authui.dll and
  • shell32.dll

Hey can virus infect an ISO? I am planning to download the win 8 ISO from net cafe and you know well that they are severely infected.

Yes, virus can affect an ISO - unless it resides on a read-only medium such as a CD / DVD.

Any idea to safely get that iso from cafe?

Better to not take risks with an OS - after all, it's the foundation stone of your work-flow, productivity and performance. :nono:

Well, if the MD5 checksum remains the same as the hash provided in the november_ra1n's thread after copying that to my thumb drive, then? :naughty:

If the checksum is identical - then, the integrity of the file is sound.

I strongly suggest Ux Style Core Beta as mentioned at post # 1 {and also reproduced below - at point # 01.)}:-

The Resources: (Windows 8)

01.) Ux Style Core Beta (http://uxstyle.com/)

02.) Icon Installer (http://virtualcustoms.net/showthread.php/53960-HUD-Icons-and-Extras-Complete-Installer-BETA)

03.) MsStyle files-cum-Theme files (http://virtualcustoms.net/forumdisplay.php/1114-The-Best-Windows-8-Themes)

04.) Ribbon Disabler (http://winaero.com/comment.php?comment.news.20)

05.) Black Glass Enhanced (http://curiouso9.deviantart.com/art/Black-Glass-Enhanced-v0-5-156752713)

06.) Refresh Icon (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?0qpdzbufdfngdgt)

07.) A Resource Editor – personally prefer Restorator 2007 (beware of the ghost; Restorator 2009 it does not exist) (http://www.bome.com/products/restorator/downloads)

08.) Take Ownership (http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?4z90aeecc09m2cs)

Good News:–

One is no longer obliged to hack each of the following 66 system files – have listed them here for the Professionals who might prefer a manual job rather than the installer:

i had to format twice after installing some update lately restoring didnt work

If your system is prone to such issues, I also strongly suggest disabling - at least, the following inbuilt security measures while skinning (or experimenting on) Windows 8:-

  • Disable Secure boot (at 2 levels)
  • Disable Boot-Start driver initialization

Once you're satisfied the state-of-affairs, you may enable the security.

Yes, I've seen that happening - never try to repair Ux Style Core Beta (the secure Boot will not allow your system to boot - it will keep going into a loop.)

Whenever the skinning does not seem to work, just get into your Personalization page and keep changing to a few themes back & forth - suddenly, your new custom theme would start working.

It's most important to disable your (security system + UAC) as mentioned at post # 1 {and also reproduced below - at point # 02.) & 03.)}:-

The Procedure: (Windows 8)

02.) Disable your AntiVirus and / or other security system

03.) Disable your UAC

Oh yes, please disable your UAC & other security system in all forms (especially SandBoxie & the HIPS module.)

Righto!!!

The disabling part is just temporary - once the system has rebooted and the skinning satisfactory in your eyes, please enable the UAC and all other security systems that were disabled.
