WALLONN7
Microsoft Wants All Linux Developers to Move to Windows 10 Give a try to WSL and you’ll be amazed, the company says Microsoft has finally acknowledged the potential that the open-source world in general, and Linux in particular, boasts, so the company is exploring its options to expand in this area with every occasion. Most recently, an episode posted on Channel 9 and entitled “Improvements to Bash on Windows and the Windows Console” with senior program manager Rich Turner calls for Linux developers to give up on their platforms for Windows 10. “Fire up a Windows 10 Insiders' build instance and run your code, run your tools, host your website on Apache, access your MySQL database from your Java code,” he explained. More improvements on their way Turner went on to point out that the Windows subsystem for Linux is there to provide developers with all the necessary tools to code just like they’d do it on Linux, all without losing the advantages of Windows 10. "Whatever it is that you normally do on Linux to build an application: whether it's in Go, in Erlang, in C, whatever you use, please, give it a try on Bash WSL, and importantly file bugs on us. It really makes our life a lot easier and helps us build a product that we can all use and be far more productive with,” he continued. Of course, Microsoft is keen on improving WSL in Windows 10, and Turner noted that the final goal is to make it fully compatible with all development tools that are currently on Linux and which could be used by those who switch to its latest OS. “We're not done yet. We have a long way to go yet until we can fully say that this thing is really comprehensibly compatible with the majority of the tools that you want to use,” he said. Recently, Microsoft joined the Linux Foundation as a platinum member, promising to contribute to the development of the open-source world. The announcement took many people by surprise, especially after former CEO Steve Ballmer described Linux as “a cancer. With Satya Nadella at the helm of the company, however, Microsoft seems to adopt a totally different approach, and getting closer to the open-source ecosystem is regarded as a priority for the software giant. vissha
@WALLONN7: I saw the news hours earlier. However, didn't like to post. FYI @DKT27 @Crazycanuk @steven36 & @dMog: This is another recent prediction of mine which came true. You could check my post in hidden thread by steven36 here. steven36
Lol they want all devs to move too Windows 10 most many Devs on Linux dont use Windows at all, there are many programs on Linux that dont exist on Windows just like there many more programs on Windows that dont work on Linux . They are some that work on Linux or Windows but dont have full support as well. Then they are some that are cross platform that work on both. But Linux has a very small amount of programs compared to windows . If Devs can port more windows programs over to Linux using windows I dont care if they use windows or Linux as long as they work on both Linux and windows when I use them The reason most people dont use Linux or dont use it all the time is because the programs we want there on Windows that's why I dual boot . Most Linux programs are kind of limited compared to the ones I have on Windows because i have way more too chose from on Windows .Besides when you are making programs for Linux you have to make them work on many different types of Linux, on Windows they dont have too work but on 3 windows OS now. Linux has been around for 25 years as far as desktop OS it's never got over 1 or 2% market share its a niche desktop for us computer nerds ..it does good in the server world but all enterprise Linux is not open source no way and Google made it successful in smartphones . It takes a lot of money to make money and be successful with Linux witch Microsoft has. Look at how many programs Android Linux made by Google has that Desktop Linux dont have ..Other's have been doing the same thing Microsoft is just starting out in for years . Google is the granddaddy of data harvesting , Google had great success with Linux , Most Devs are on Apple and Android so saying they want all Linux Devs make no sense . That's not going too help them tell they make a OS with Linux . It's more about them being able to compete in the smartphone market than anything. The masses in smartphones are on Apple and Android Linux . So unless they build something that can compete with Apple and Google, Linux want be helpful . Linux Desktop is no threat to Microsoft only Android Linux and Apple UNIX is

There are many more versions than just 7, 8.1, and 10. There are embedded versions, server versions, x86 and x64 versions, and then there are all the modifications made to the various versions by businesses and geeks. Even Microsoft has always said that there are so many different versions just because of the hardware drivers that are installed and custom software installs that it makes it difficult to for them to even create an update that doesn't break something somewhere or at least have the capability of doing so. Granted there are different versions of linux but normally you only see three different installers that work on all versions. Microsoft must feel threatened by Linux since they are now trying to embrace it, whereas before they just ignored it. The only time they paid attention to Apple was when it appeared Apple would fail and Microsoft gave them $150 million. The real reason was that if Apple failed Microsoft would have come under government scrutiny as a monopoly and could have possibly been forced to break the company up into separate companies that would compete against each other. Microsoft never does anything for anybody that doesn't benefit Microsoft immensely more than the entity they are trying to 'help.'

LOL Most legacy software for windows been around for a coons age just code updates, Most Windows Devs have a hard time keeping up with Windows 10 even , On Linux most programs are built on new platforms you cant find everything or get updates for everything on old versions of Linux you're stuck using old after new comes out if you use LTS and dont update, Windows dont have this problem . You know how people used XP for 2 years after updates expired and still was able to update most programs? That dont happen on Linux once LTS expire you are stuck using outdated programs tell you update to the next LTS . Windows is supported all software for 10 years and most devs make it for 2 more years in Windows XP case its been over 14 years . On Linux once the next LTS comes out you start losing software updates and after 5 years you get no more software or security updates.
