Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2 General Availability Update Rollup

Just wanted to throw this info out to nsaners. After installing rollup updates onto Server 2012 R2 Datacenter my memory would start at say 6% and would slowly increase to 100%. This all happens in about a 5 minute span. After that my computer would freeze and lockup. So would reboot and the whole process would start over again. Reinstalled Server without updates and memory sticks at 10%. Rollups were no good for me.

I thought My PC went wrong and Im going to clean install 8.1 now since my PC freezes and locks and then comes back to life after a while.

Did you happen to run this in command prompt? Dism.exe /online /Cleanup-Image /StartComponentCleanup /ResetBase

It suppose to clean the WinSxS folder and give you a nice up-to-date new windows. I did a clean install of my Server. Installed rollup updates and memory is behaving itself. I'm thinking problem was with the cleaning of the WinSxS folder to begin with. what do you think there Diego T?

Windows from WindowsSetupBox.exe is final .iso and can i use it without any problems?

just use the burned iso files to do upgrade , no need to use the *.exe file and even better not to use it since it asked for legit key while the iso doesn't :D

Guys this is not said by me...just sharing...credit goes to the actual author...source

Some guys thought that the "new" win8.1 ISO's released by MS on GA is a new compilation to replace RTM build 9600.16384, some refer it as RTM-2. And most people, already installed 9600.16384 and added RollupA updates, tended to reformat and fresh install with the new ISO's, thinking that it is something new and different.

I have downloaded the win8.1Pro X86 GA edition, let's see what's in it:

First I extracted install.esd to a new drive, by going thru installation(in a VM) and kill the process after expanding files, all this time web connection was disabled so nothing to affect it. Windows\explorer.exe reported 9600.16408, and system32\ntoskrnl.exe reported 9600.16404

image_798_zpsbc196d34.jpg

Now, when installation is completed, open Control Panel ->Windows Update -> Installed Updates

image_799_zpsaec88c26.jpg

Since there is no restore point, the 4 updates could not be un-installed, I am quite sure if it could be done, it would simply roll back to nothing but build 9600.16384, nothing more, nothing less.

Any comments? biggrin.png

OS build number is determind with ntoskrnl.exe version, not Explorer.exe file name. The article was posted here explaining all this and the difference between 16404,16408 and 16384 but whole thread has been accidentally deleted by a mod and are trying to get it back

[NEWS/DISCUSSIONS]: Windows 8.1 General Availability - Page 57

this it?

The final RTM build is 16384 and the GA build is really also 16384.only certain files have been updated to various newer versions on a file-to-file basis.
The final build should be defined as the build that forms the base image which is 16384.
In the past any subsequent RTM candidate build involves the build number of every single file on the system being bumped up. But once it hits RTM, the build numbers are incremented only on a per-file basis from hotfixes.
The reported new build is just the file version of a single file on the system.
You could take Windows 8.1 Preview (not even 9600), forcibly replace the kernel exe with a 9600.16404 one, and it'll report that Windows is 9600.16404 when literally every other file on the system isn't even 9600.
Which is why reporting the kernel exe's build as the "Windows" build is misleading. The "Windows" build really should be the baseline version and the version of the vast majority of the files on the OS, even after the GA rollup is 16384.

I downloaded Windows 8.1 PRO (English US) x 64 ISO from TPB and compared it to my own download.

The files seems similar except the install.esd the one from your iso is 2.571.347.876 bytes whilst mine is 2.603.230.654 bytes, furthermore drvmainxx.dll sysmainxx.sdb, upgrade_bulk.xml have different sizes.

My system is Windows 8 with MMC. So it seems that every update downloaded with WindowsSetupBox is different. What do you think?

ISOs generated through the Windows upgrade assistant are unique to each download.

How about the \sources\install.esd file, are they the same? I think so...

Mine is (win 64bit en_us):

Size: 2.6 GB (2,571,347,876 bytes)

md5sum: f39a93420e9133905eed5adc49209b05

sha1sum: 788437d4a53adb69f05805388a00e4a7fcee0e10

Can someone check?

Why did you want to install 90 day evaluation edition instead of MSDN Edition you can easily activate permanently first place with this edition you will never activate as far as i know not even KMS activation possibly when and if available.!
