Microsoft Issues Warning For 50M Windows 10 Users

Windows 10 continues to be a danger zone. Not only have problems been piling up in recent weeks, Microsoft has also been worryingly deceptive about the operation of key services. And now the company has warned millions about another problem.

Windows 10 users have been exposed to a worrying new vulnerability

Spotted by the always excellent Windows Latest, Microsoft has told tens of millions of Windows 10 users that the latest KB4501375 update may break the platform’s Remote Access Connection Manager (RASMAN). And this can have serious repercussions.

The big one is VPNs. RASMAN handles how Windows 10 connects to the internet and it is a core background task for VPN services to function normally. Given the astonishing growth in VPN usage for everything from online privacy and important work tasks to unlocking Netflix and YouTube libraries, this has the potential to impact heavily on how you use your computer.

Interestingly, in detailing the issue Microsoft states that it only affects Windows 10 1903 - the latest version of the platform. The problem is Windows 10 1903 accounts for a conservative total of at least 50M users.

Microsoft's Windows 10 updates remain a minefield

Why conservative? Because Microsoft states Windows 10 has been installed on 800M computers worldwide, but that figure is four months old. Meanwhile, the ever-reliable AdDuplex reports Windows 10 1903 accounted for 6.3% of all Windows 10 computers in June (50.4M), but that percentage was achieved in just over a month and their report is 10 days old. Microsoft has listed a complex workaround, but no timeframe has been announced for an actual fix.

In the meantime, Microsoft is stepping up its attempts to push Windows 7 users to Windows 10. Those users must be looking at Windows 10 right now and thinking they will resist to the very end

What's the thing to do to keep safe now? @Mach1 @straycat19 @Sylence @steven36

Also, I just got two laptops completely reset so I don't remember what ports and all (including other security measures) do I need to lock the system from big and potentially big vulnerabilities. Are any insights and help possible?

@Ha91 You mean whats going to keep Windows 10 users safe ? Witch I'm not no more in over a year,  because when Ubuntu 18.04 1st came out in Apr 25, 2018 when i installed it  I removed Windows 10 and replaced it with windows 8.1 dual boot  . And I've not reformatted  any PC in over a year.  My other PC is just Linux I stopped using Windows on it all together.  The other 2 PCs on my network  is just Windows 7 but i don't use them someone else use one of them and i never turn the other Windows 7 PC on.

There is  over 4 billion people  on the internet and only 50 million Windows 10 users  that cares.  4.39 billion internet users in 2019  and growing with over a million new users a day.

https://wearesocial.com/blog/2019/01/digital-2019-global-internet-use-accelerates

That means three billion eight hundred ninety million and growing don't give a :shit:  .  :lmao:

That Microsoft and Windows 10 users problem not mine I think it's pathetic  if you ask me  , vpns work  on Google Andorid  ,IOS ,Mac  and Linux   , I don't recommend using Windows at all with a vpn  but if you must used closed source , if you can get it to work , it's better than going naked  but still when you boot up unless you have vpn hooked to your router Microsoft knows who you are  and most Windows 10 users are signed in with Microsoft anyway  witch if you use a Microsoft account with a VPN  they will lock your account  and want a phone number. I had and To Do app with a Microsoft account i made with a VPN  thorough it  and as soon as i changed ips they wanted my phone number so there more than useless . So i removed the app from Linux i'm not giving them a phone number.  Still Windows invades your privacy with or without a vpn so  it just depends on what  you need a vpn for  ,most normal users don't have one.   :hehe:

This want effect many users no way it only will be a problem for people who use Always On VPN (AOVPN) Only some

Enterprise use this . It only effects users that Connect  there Network  via Windows remote . And the fix for it will be out long before Enterprise updates to this version or you can easy fix it yourself . There are 50 million beta testers on 1903  lol.

This does not affect manual only VPN profiles or connections

To mitigate this issue, use one of the steps below, either the group policy step or the registry step, to configure one of the default telemetry settings.

Set the value for the following group policy settings:

  1. Group Policy Path: Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Data Collection and Preview Builds\Allow Telemetry
  2. Safe Policy Setting: Enabled and set to 1 (Basic) or 2 (Enhanced) or 3 (Full)

Or set the following registry value:

SubKey: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\DataCollection

Setting: AllowTelemetry

Type: REG_DWORD

Value: 1, 2 or 3

Note If the Remote Access Connection Manager service is not running after setting the Group Policy or registry key, you will need to manually start the service or restart the device.

We are working on a resolution and estimate a solution will be available in late July.

Always On VPN allows secure remote access to corporate networks from a Windows 10 client. In lay terms, it allows workers to access locally stored documents in a secure manner while off-site; reducing travel and streamlining communication.

Technically speaking, Always On VPN allows remote devices to send requests to a secure VPN server. The server then relays the request to a corporate Network Policy Server (NPS) which validates the request and, according to the relevant security criteria, decides how to respond. The VPN server is protected on both sides by firewalls to prevent malicious attacks.

Semi-Annual Channel  is in versions before 1903 that defer the update  about 4 months they removed this in 1903 in this version  the system admin  will have to modify the deferral period they have to add 120 days to the deferral period once Windows 10 version 1903 is installed to reflect the change. This and mirocsoft not pushing it  to consumers is why they very little users on 1903.

Only fanboys  that  don't care about stability  are gun-ho about installing new versions of Windows or any OS for that matter It best to use a test machine if you want to test upgrades even on Linux I wait tell LTS gets its 1st point release to upgrade   , i stayed on XP for 10 years  and when i started installing  other versions of Windows that didn't come on my PC ,  1st with a upgrade to Windows 7 from  XP in 2011  and then upgrades from  Windows 8.1 to windows 10 in 2015 it caused pain and bugs  that what upgrades do , even XP SP 3 caused  bugs so many users stayed with SP2  as  long as they could.

You are absolutely correct, brother. I remember when I first installed Windows 8.1 and XP SP2 and SP3 and those installations caused disasters and headaches for me too.

I was just curious to know because I now remember the ports that we had to close for worm-safe Windows. I am actually talking about those kind of loopholes that people like us first started worrying about long before it got fixed or even noticed by those ignorant shit-dick-dumb heads 😛

Thanks for sticking by, responding in time and with due respect. Always admire that from you, man :D  Don't change!

Not this :shit: again back in 2015 Ed Bott criticized  Gordon Kelly  before over a Windows 10 Privacy post  . Bott do some good post for Windows users  but this post like Kelly post in OP both are opinion peaces . There is some bad stuff M$  done like removing registry  backup from system restore but still you can download some 3rd party software and back it up yourself . Both these guys are making Mt. out of  molehills , nether editor know IT they just write about it ,  i  teach myself more in  the last 3 years than they will ever learn in there whole life and i been working on PCs for 17 years . Ed Bott was criticized  before for taking  bribes from Microsoft so  hes the pot calling the kettle  black.  🤣

Microsoft woos bloggers with free computers, Vista

https://www.networkworld.com/article/2302467/microsoft-woos-bloggers-with-free-computers--vista.html

Bott pulled the same :shit: with Windows Vista and we all know how messed up it was  he defends  everything Microsoft do  because he gets free stuff for it that his job being a M$ shill  Just Kelly and Woody are paid to tell the other side of the story . But the bottom line they all get paid to post about Tech .
