Microsoft Edge Extension Toolkit now available for download

The new app is available in the store

The recently-released Windows 10 Anniversary Update brought support for extensions in Microsoft Edge browser, but it’s no secret that the number of add-ons that are currently up for grabs is still small.

Microsoft’s plan was to bring the essential extensions on Microsoft Edge first and then continue working with developers to port more such add-ons to the platform using tools specifically created in this regard.

And one such tool is now available for download in the Windows Store, allowing developers to quickly convert Google Chrome extensions to Microsoft Edge. Called Microsoft Edge Extension Toolkit, this app perfectly aligns with Microsoft’s plans to bring Chrome extensions to Windows 10, as the company wanted to make extension support in Edge to be fully compatible with Google’s browser.

Free for download in the store

Microsoft aimed to develop ways that would allow the porting of Google Chrome extensions to Edge with little to no modifications at all and this new application lends developers a hand in this regard.

“This toolkit allows developer to convert a Chrome extension to run on Microsoft Edge in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update (14393.10) edition. The tool creates the necessary JSON manifest entries and bridges the chrome.* APIs to the browser.* APIs supported on Microsoft Edge, polyfiling where necessary,” the app description published in the store reads.

At this moment, the app is still in its early days in the store and updates are still needed, but it’s living proof that Microsoft does want to go further with its plans to make Google Chrome extensions easier to port to Microsoft Edge browser.

Extension support is only available in Microsoft Edge on Windows 10 Anniversary Update and it’s currently offered on PCs exclusively. Microsoft said that at some point extensions could arrive on mobile devices too, but the company first wants to get everything right on PCs and then concentrate on bringing extensions to phones. This could happen in Redstone 2, which is due in spring 2017.

So much for security in Edge, they just made it easier to port malicious chrome extensions to Edge.  Lots of luck with that Microsoft.  Security and Microsoft is like oil and water, they don't mix and the oil always floats on top.  Or another way to say it is Microsoft is like whale shit on the bottom of the ocean.

Wait but shouldn't for the analogy to work properly the whale shit float at the top, not the bottom of the ocean?

Actually it shouldn't be a problem since google is working on a better signing verifying of legit app's for android and chome os and then they plan to mesh it all together it should reduce the possibility of malicious software and edge is sandboxed so is chrome if they just sandbox it to a specific partition that is completely locked down and encrypted then there is a very minimal chance of it getting out. besides you're more likely to get malware from Facebook and other social media sites with their ads or any news site for that matter and the average person doesn't know how to do any of this or block ads or I wouldn't have business in software, OS repair and security.

nobody said all the extensions you make goes straight to Windows Store and available for public to download without any supervision and verification from Microsoft. if you question Windows 10's security based on such things then you have no idea how much secure this OS is comparing to other OSes.

I have personally been testing every site I go to even web site builders on edge build 1607 now and seems only one site isn't compatible even battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline battlelog works perfect just avoid WIX.com until they patch their site to be compatible they claim they are working on it. I have many clients websites that use wix so I have to use IE11 with all the secret adblocker's runner of course and I am running adblock on edge not plus since it causes issues and it stats that in the disclaimer before you install it. speedtest.net works great all ads are blocked properly with regular adblock. no more slow downs even firefox and chrome can no longer compete and I will continue to use edge I waited and I hated edge until they fixed it and now it is finally a memory efficient speed demon with adblock OMG its a joy not like IE11, I could care less about battery life since I don't use a laptop unless I have nothing else, carpal tunnel is bad with laptops.
