There's a colloquial saying in my country that goes "in every joke, there's a grain of joke." And the Windows community has been joking and laughing a lot lately. Not from joy, but rather as a coping mechanism caused by the current state of Windows as a platform and Microsoft as a company.

January 2026 has been rough so far, maybe one of the roughest starts to a year in recent history. We receive news of something breaking down daily. It's like an endless lowlight reel of bugs, crashes, server downtimes, and overall instability across all of the company's platforms and services.

Microsoft is trying to turn the page on a buggy start to 2026 with a fresh batch of features, but the shadow of January’s Patch Tuesday disaster looms large.

January 2026 was nothing but a disaster for Windows, with Microsoft confirming plenty of bugs and even issuing two out-of-band updates to resolve some of the most severe bugs. Speaking of severe bugs, earlier this month, Microsoft acknowledged reports of certain computers not being able to boot after applying the latest security updates and crashing into black screens of death with an "unmountable boot volume" error." Now, Microsoft has more details about the issue.

If you've been reading Neowin for the past couple of weeks, you probably have a good idea about the issues that the latest Patch Tuesday update has been causing. To Microsoft's credit, the company has been scrambling to fix these problems as soon as possible, releasing multiple out-of-band (OOB) updates, which is a bit unusual considering it's only been less than two weeks since KB5074109 made its way to the public.

The January 2026 Patch Tuesday update for Windows 11 keeps on giving users headaches. Following reports about frozen apps, broken apps, and the rather hilarious inability to shut down PCs, which are now said to be resolved after the second emergency OOB update (KB5078127, KB5078132) users are now facing a much more serious issue where affected computers simply refuse to boot and show an "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME" error.

Microsoft has released today new OOB (out of band) updates for Windows 11 and 10. The update is meant to fix the myriad of various major issues across Windows 11 and 10 that are affecting many systems, which were ironically broken by the previous KB5077744 and KB5077797 updates that were also OOB emergency updates meant to mend the earlier issues.

Rufus is a great utility for creating bootable drivers, which, among Windows users, is primarily known for its ability to bypass plenty of Microsoft's annoyances, such as forced BitLocker encryption, forced hardware requirements, forced Microsoft Account and online initial setup, and a lot more. Its latest update, version 4.12 (currently in beta), brings several improvements over the previous release, which was released in October last year.

Your recommendation now is to uninstall the latest update to mitigate bugs. What's going on with the quality control for updates, Microsoft?

We recently wrote about a Patch Tuesday bug causing apps to go unresponsive if they interact with cloud storage services. This was the latest addition in the long list of bugs caused by Patch Tuesday in the past week or so, impacting Remote Desktop, hibernation and shutdown behavior, and Outlook. Now, Windows 11 users are reporting a new issue that renders several apps useless.

Windows 7 and especially Windows Vista are things of the past for most PC users. Microsoft stopped updating these operating system long time ago, and security issues aside, using them on a daily basis is quite a challenge, considering that mainstream software no longer supports pre-Windows 10 releases. However, there are still people out there running Windows 7 and Vista on their devices, and if you need to install one of these two legendary operating systems, you can now download images that include every possible update for the truly ultimate experience.

Microsoft's latest Patch Tuesday updates for Windows 10, 11, and Server have been wreaking havoc for the last week or so. So far, users have experienced issues in Remote Desktop, hibernation and shutdown behavior, and Outlook. Although the Redmond tech firm has released patches for some of these problems already, a new one has now been acknowledged by the firm.

Last week, Microsoft released the first Patch Tuesday updates of 2026 on Windows 11 under KB5074109 and KB5073455. Alongside that, the company also published related dynamic updates under KB5074108, KB5074208, and KB5073454.

Unfortunately for users, the Patch Tuesday update has some major issues, and as such, Microsoft was forced to release emergency OOB updates for them to patch those issues under KB5077744 and KB5077797.

Earlier this week, Microsoft released the first Patch Tuesday updates of 2026 for Windows 11 and Windows 10. On Windows 11, it was released under KB5073455 for Windows 11 23H2 and KB5074109 for Windows 11 25H2 / 24H2.

As is often the case with Patch Tuesday updates, they introduce bugs and issues, and this month is no exception either. The company has confirmed that Windows 11 23H2 computers are not able to shut down normally after installing the latest KB5073455 release. Thankfully, not all devices are affected by this bug as Microsoft has explained that the issue is on systems configured with Secure Launch. So if a user chooses to shut down an affected PC, the system does a restart.
