<img src="http://www.nsanedown.com/images/logos/News.png" class="logo" alt="news" />It's that time again, another update to nsane.down; v2.1.5.

Some highlights:

  • Relocated Google Ads in the code; site content loads first, then ads.
  • Improved 'Please disable your AdBlocker message'; it now only shows when the ads are blocked.
  • Autofocus on the Quick Downloads Search on pageload; to allow for faster searching.
  • Some small layout changes in the Quick Downloads Search.
  • Improved 'cross-browser display' of the site, as well as improved IE7 compatibility.
  • Various other code changes and improvements.

We hope you like all the changes, but as always feedback and suggestions are much appreciated.

We would also like to remind you all to please whitelist our domain(s) from your AdBlockers, due to the latest changes the ads no longer slow down the page loading and they have always been unobtrusive.

We have also changed the way in which we update our CSS and Javascript files, so a cache refresh should no longer be necessary to see the changes. If you do notice anything out of the ordinary, please make sure to refresh your cache before reporting it.

On a side note: still 10% of the Internet uses IE7 (mostly corporate use though), so we made sure that the site is 'viewable' (with some loss of functions, like the links under every update) in IE7. It's also reasonably viewable for IE6, for those living in the stone-age :P

A more extensive list of changes:

- relocated ads in the code, enables page to load faster for slower connections (and slightly faster for fast connections, barely noticeable).

- changed behavior of top menu (subcategories will still show the main category 'marked').

- changed the breadcrumb (cut off after certain limit, to avoid it messing up the layout a little).

- small layout changes to the quick search (mainly inside the results, they are spaced better now).

- IE7 compatibility improved.

- autofocus on Quick Search; faster searching.

- fixed Latest Community Activity box 'shifting height' (barely noticeable), more of a 'more technically correct than it was before'-fix.

- Latest Community Activity box now 'blends' while shifting 'frame'. (Crossfades, instead of fade out --> fade out.)

- fixed compatibility between browsers (the sidebar displays more the same in all browsers now, this was necessary for the new ad location method as well).

- different handling of the 'we noticed you are blocking ads'.

Since the last update, i have a small problem with the site.

It's not a big deal, and i can live with it. (oviously)

below the "Latest Community Activity" window, there is an ad.

Using Firefox 3.6.13, if i use a minimal font setting of 15 or more (i use 17), the ad hide part of the window (it hide half of it, when i use minimal 17 font).

So...

i see half the "Latest communauty activities", unless i don't use minimal font, or switch to IE or Opera, when visiting the site.

Aside from that, the site look great, and work wonder.

I can imagine everything will look messed up if you use a minimum font setting. It's really not up to the browser to determine the font size... Not unless everyone switches to fully scalable designs at least ;)

If you want to view our site larger I recommend enlarging it by Ctrl + Scroll Up in Firefox, this will enlarge the whole site, instead of just certain pieces of text. (This is also a whole other story in the 'it's not up to the browser'-debate; zooming is, obviously, up to the browser.)

Thanks for pointing it out, but fixing this would mean moving the ads back, which would degrade performance, or making the whole design scalable, which is madness, and this is not Sparta, this is nsane :D

(I know you don't 'need' us to fix this and you were just pointing it out and you didn't need me to explain to you why it's not easy to fix, but it's either all-in or all-out :P)

Again thanks for pointing it out, please keep in mind my recommendation about just 'zooming in' the whole site ;)

shought, you are correct, about all of this, as always.

it seem you can really read my mind

Maybe it's time for me to use again the firefox addon "NoSquint", and stop using this minimal font setting again.

With it, i can use personal zoom setting for either all the page, or text only, for each site individually. (but scrolling feel sluggish on my low end PC).

It would have better performance, simply zooming with ctrl+ like you say...

long live nsane :D

:)

I'm sorry you can't use your settings on our fp anymore, but life's tough

Long live an nsane life :D

Your latest edit to the site has resulted in the "Latest Community Activity" box on the left side of the home page being obscured by sponsored ads. As a result, I have had to renenable my ad blocker so I can see that part of the page. If you fix this, I will be able to once again white list your site which I would like to do.

Are you using a minimal font size setting in your browser?

That's the only thing I could think of which would screw up the design like that.

--- (If not you don't need to read on and we need to find out what's the actual problem you're experiencing :)) ---

Fact is that using this setting (I've been playing with it a little) would not just screw up the sidebar ad, but the latest community activity box as well (because it relies on the fact that the topic titles are long enough to be descriptive, but small enough to 'just' fit in the space that it has, if you enlarge it, it will go to a new line).

I'm willing to look into this, but there's no easy solution for this problem, which is, as I'd like to mention again, something you should complain about to Firefox, not us. When creating a website you take into account numerous things to make your website look the best it can be, and Firefox, with this setting, allows anyone to just crush all that time and effort you put into it with one simple setting?

Also there doesn't seem to be an easy way to check whether this setting is enabled on the user agent or not... Way to go Firefox. (For once it's not IE who is to blame for being stupid, IE's handling of this is actually much better: percentage defined fonts are enlarged by this setting, but px or pt defined fonts are not, allowing the web designer to differentiate between content that should be allowed to be resized by this setting and content that should not be allowed to be resized by this setting.)

Ok, I spent half an hour on it and now the design won't break until the top menu actually breaks. (So everything breaks at one particular font size. It's 14 ... something (px, pt, don't know, Firefox doesn't tell me that) for me.)

Now it's your job to find out which (because it might differ from browser to browser) and not set it any higher than that :P

Or rather: don't use this setting and zoom instead, which enlarges everything, a much better functionality :)

Yeah, it was my font size etc. in FF that was causing the problem but you fixed it enough now that I can use my normal font size with the site whitelisted and now I can see most (enough) of that box on the left to keep the site whitelisted.

Thanks for your efforts. Much appreciated.

No problem :)

Our aim is obviously to make our site accessible to everyone, without changing it for the others. I didn't know so many people were using a setting like this.

(I mean this is two people from a sample of what, maybe 200 (who visit our frontpage, noticed the bug, wanted to say something about it, got to our forums and did)? That's 1%, so quite a lot.)

I hope Firefox will update or remove this feature in future versions, as it is in no way the browser's job to 'mess with' the accessibility of websites. Web designers are responsible for the accessibility of their applications, and although I do admit that the browsers should not 'obstruct' this in any way and should actually 'facilitate' accessibility (in allowing for a certain standard) I do think that they should not 'interfere' like this.

*End Speech* :P
