NOD32 Version 2.7

Recommended Posts

It was good for its time. It cannot address more than 2GB of ram, so any threats residing in higher addresses in ram will go undetected.

If you find NOD32 v4 is slow just disable the hi-tech guessing known as Advanced Heuristics. It will be faster than v2.

Yes. v2.7 is completely outdated. It's a shame to use this version. Better to not use an AV than this old crappy version...

It's a shame that some people think that they are better protected by an AV created few years ago instead actual AV.

Even NOD32 stopped his support and updates for 2.7

End of support for ESET NOD32 Antivirus 2.7

:(

everyone is free to use whatever comes in handy. besides slowing down a PC an AV is useless when it comes to protecting and cleaning of the everyday emerging threats.this thread was created for the people who really liked the 2nd version of this AV. no one is forced to download or use it.

Totally agree. I never said otherwise.

Yes. v2.7 is completely outdated.

:nono: It's not - scroll down for enlightenment through your own link.

It's a shame to make such uneducated remarks without even trying out the software in question. We'd like to see you substantiate your statements especially when they're so strong.

Where're the facts and did you read all the posts before making your own illustrious one. :coolwink:

Get yourself back there through your own link (it's written in English, BTW.)
Are you aware this is the year 2010

Virus Signature Database updates and customer support for NOD32 Antivirus 2.7 will be discontinued on February 1, 2012

I'm just trying to open people's eyes... :sneaky:

Promises to be quite an adventurous mission - with both your eyes wide . . . . . . . . . . shut.

Yes, it's outdated. I mean the main engine of this software is outdated.

It's a shame to make such uneducated remarks without even trying out the software in question.

Why do you say this ?

Myself, I used version 2.7 , 3.x and 4.x for many months ! You, you wrote "uneducated remarks".

2.7 was a good anti-virus.

(I meant to use this version, today, is a stupid idea.)

It's a shame to make such uneducated remarks without even trying out the software in question. We'd like to see you substantiate your statements especially when they're so strong.

Do you really think 2.7 is modern, powerfull ? think 2.7 includes all recently security improvements and others philosophies appearead since Vista up to Windows 7.

Are you a security engineer ? Do you think your are smarter than security developers ?

So my arguments are the professional arguments. (Eset themself and Microsoft)

As you can see :

"End of support for ESET NOD32 Antivirus 2.7"

"Support for this product version is being discontinued because it is outdated and relies on “retired” Microsoft operating systems. We recommend that customers who currently use ESET NOD32 Antivirus 2.7 upgrade to version 4.2, free of charge. Our latest version provides improved security and deeper functionality..."

"Q4: Why upgrade to the latest ESET security product (version 4.2)?

A4: Threats are evolving every day, requiring a more robust solution to offer maximum protection. For more information on the new features in ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.2, refer to the following Knowledgebase article: What is new in ESET Smart Security 4.2 and ESET NOD32 Antivirus 4.2?"

So I stop here the debate and stop to pollute the topic.

I'm going to finish with 3 things :

- 2.7 was a good security software.

- Better to find an alternative than use this old software (with or without AV)

- Each are free to use this software (or switch on your bain and think to delete this software)

- Peace !

Cool down guys. A argument is best without any remarks. ;)

It's dcs18's point that v2.7 still catches all the items in-spite of it's older engine (but latest definitions). And needs to be configured to fullest to avoid problems. Also is good on slow systems. And spootnack says that it still cannot match the latest version and it's newer ways to fight malware.

I don't think anyone of us can be 100% sure about it.

So everyone has their likes/dislikes and preference. I'll like to see them being expressed with mutual respect. :)

Nice to know that there are ppl out there who is passionate with 2.7.

I, for one, will continue to use it on my old machine, now that a new fix is available, with windows 7 x86.

I think two points made by LeetPirate earlier were two that really stood out to me... about RAM and the fact that ver 4 could be even lower in usage if the same settings were applied...

Still thinking about testing it on the old system though.. what it always had on it before.. and I know of three members of my family who still use it on archaic systems at my recommendation years ago..

I am still an upgrade whore though at heart..:lmao:

@ dcs and spootnack

glad you`re not arguing (ironic)...as i said this thread is created for helping people who really wanted a new fix for v2.7, who really liked the detection rate, who liked the UI and for the nostalgic. this was not created to be an A vs B thread.

spoot: stop posting expert opinions by copying from one place to another. if you have something to say, say it with your own words.

dcs stop arguing for this AV. it`s not yours. nor the crack. i don`t want you to influence nobody. everybody is free to use whatever he/se likes.

PERIOD!

Not so glad i started this thread anymore...

You have to remember that within this community.. that is based on software.. there will be differing opinions... Its not really about bashing on one thing or the next.. but discussion and debate will always take place as we all find our way to an agreeable median which can serve as overall evaluation... You even see individuals involved in this come back after thinking and researching to confer on what they have found.. sometimes.. If we have developed enough to know and accept that these things will occur in life.. and we are not too full of ourselves to move forward.. How well we value each other on this point can be important.. to being able to be objective.

I think what happened above you will see from time to time everywhere.. and especially something seems factual from both sides of the story. Both will present facts which are stated and they will be eventually weighed.. and this can help people make decisions for themselves depending on the criteria... May have even helped more people to decide to use it...

I thought the thread took off rather quickly and with a great deal of positive force.. I still think it has it as well.. If I were you, I would be glad that simply you are getting people to think.. and even learn considerable aspects of choosing software.. where other threads can be nothing more than a very 'personablized' form of advertising.. Sometimes I think the tone in which the words are metabolized in our heads can effect.. the weight they carry.. which can effect which direction they all take as well.. and why the way they can turn without warning.. Same words different tone.. different tone/mix.. Even within the stress and confusion can be triggered the Neanderthalic course of action.. which is instinctive to our humanity.. ( also effect s how we interpret stimuli coming in as well .. we are liable to fill in areas which are absent within simple text.. ) and a simple part of who we are until things are clear... without a grey area for some as many of us ARE security fanatics.. and grey doesn't cut it.. has to be clean cut.. You can even see areas which are of particular concern or questioned by when something in a discussion changes direction, and the trigger..

In the thread.. You have gotten opinions from both sides of the story.. which is a point of discussion... and debate.. and sometimes frustrating ( especially when it starts going in circles or we find contradictory information on all sides of the obelisk ) You have involved one the coders here, and revived and replaced an old fix with an update.. which can now be used by individuals who have systems they had rather use it on.. With a new name... and many requests for it..

There is more good here than you realize.. What is a thread without discussion.. and debate which triggers thought...which is real content... and people learn elements not necessarily about the specific objects in mind.. but more about the subject matter... Shallow ramblings which are no more reminiscent of positive IM's on a messenger are fun, encouraging, and can be positive reinforcement.. ( are needed and still valued ) but really what content does it hold for getting anywhere and taking something from it? Just the way I look at it. :D

I remember someone was going to test it on a x64 OS....any luck?

I am impressed at how chilled everyone is here :) it's not always easy to convey things as intended through words alone, and things can be mis-understood, opinions and advice can be taken badly and become flamed so quickly (I have seen it so many times on other forums). Congrats on the awesomeness :dance2:

Life would be boring if everyone had the exact same taste/opinion on everything

Edit*

also for anyone who wants to remove the trial days remaining text, replace your nod32krn.exe with this one -

you have to do it in safe mode, or you won't have access

To be honest I have no idea why anyone would install NOD32 v2.7 regardless of the amount of ram they have. Unless it's a windows 2000 box with 512MB ram. The engine architecture is mostly made from assembly and is not scalable to new operating systems at all, the code will work great for the intended systems, probably windows 95 to XP but anyone who could run Windows 7 should not be using Nod32 v2.7. Windows 7 handles multi-threads and task scheduling different from XP. Nod32 v2.7 was highly optimised for single core cpu as well because it was made for its time and it was the best AV during its time, not now. Nobody knows if v2.7 could even efficiently read isolated memory locations on the dedicated cache on the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th core. It probably has to pull everything to core 0 to scan data.

In my opinion I believe people perceive that v2.7 is faster than v4 but that could be because v2.7 does less things, there are so many viruses out there that could easily cripple nod32 v2.7, using the same methods used to modify and crack it, on top of that any process could kill the task. I believe if you run benchmarks using all the same settings across versions you will see that v4 is faster. If you want a faster boot then disable startup scan, it is kinda useless if you ask me; I mean if your pc didn't get a virus when you shutdown then where would it get one while being turned off? Therefore startup scan only increases boot time for no reason, part of what it does is look for rootkits at boot but I believe any infections should have been caught upon download else startup scan isn't going to catch anything previously missed, that's my take on it. On my system Nod32 v4 uses around 60MB of ram during a smart scan and the scanner uses approximately 20 threads and it uses Core #1 which is great because it leaves Core #0 free and most applications hit the first core so by leaving the first core free nod32 v4 is acting to increase your productivity. I have seen v4 use 40MB ram on other systems, like most smartly coded AV it caches data depending on the amount of free memory available.

That's another thing I should talk about, people perceive that free ram = best performance but really this is not true. Free ram = unused ram = wasted resources = under performance. This is why most OS like Linux and Windows 7 cache lots of data to ram, Linux can be configured to cache even more so seeing 25% free ram on a linux box does not mean it is performing slowly at all. Cached data = faster performance, the more stuff cached in memory means things will run faster, and if any application requires more ram the OS throws out it's own cached data to make space. In some Linux, cached and buffer memory is counted as free memory, it causes some confusion though but what it implies is the OS just loads up ram with stuff incase it needs it but it can all be thrown out to make space. This is called efficient usage of resources. You won't find people renting office buildings and leaving most of it empty would you?

Tried my best to objectively answer your question, hope it helps. ;)

it helps alot. thanks man! but if someone still uses xp it`s good enough, right? the only problem would be that it can be disabled/killed really easy, right?
