mood
Apple's iMac Pro to be discontinued The base model can still be had on Apple's site, but only while inventory's available. Sarah Tew/CNET It looks like Apple's iMac Pro is going to that big computer showroom in the sky. The $4,999 standard model is still available on Apple's site, but only while current supplies last -- once they're gone, the iMac Pro will no longer be available, Apple told us Saturday. Released in 2017, the iMac Pro was touted by Apple at the time as "by far the most powerful iMac we've ever made" and was aimed at professionals who needed really fast processing and lots of computing horsepower. But the machine hasn't gotten any significant hardware upgrades since then. The 27-inch iMac that debuted in August of last year can be configured to address the needs of professionals and now becomes the go-to iMac for pros, Apple told us Saturday, adding that buyers who want expandability and more power can turn to the Mac Pro. Apple is getting ready to revamp its iMac line of desktop computers, Bloomberg reported in January. mood
And so it ends: iMac Pro disappears from Apple’s website It’s no longer possible to buy a new iMac Pro from the online Apple Store. Photo: Apple Two weeks after Apple discontinued the iMac Pro, the company pulled the powerful all-in-one desktop from its website Friday. The computer hadn’t been updated in three years and there have been no reports of a new version in the works. This may be the last iMac Pro … just as it was the first. Say goodnight iMac Pro Two weeks ago, a note appeared on the listing for the iMac Pro on Apple’s website stating “while supplies last.” And there was only one configuration available. As of now, the computer no long appears in Apple’s online store. The link that used to go to its product listing redirects to the page for all Macs. For a look at what this all means, don’t miss the Cult of Mac editorial “Good riddance to iMac Pro and the era of underwhelming Macs.” Could a 2021 version be in development? After Apple discontinued the iMac Pro, speculation bubbled up that the company would unveil a new version soon. But this desktop was an odd duck from the beginning. The iMac Pro debuted in 2017, primarily as a way to satisfy professional graphic designers no longer happy with the 2013 Mac Pro. The release of the 2019 Mac Pro raises questions about whether there’s any need for a professional-grade iMac at all. Especially as a revamped Mac Pro with an M-series chip is supposedly in development. But simply because Apple stopped selling the iMac Pro doesn’t make the computer instantly obsolete. Despite launching three years ago, the all-in-one desktop machine remains one of Apple’s fastest. The version with a 10-core Intel Xeon W processor running at 3.0 GHz scores 9385 on Geekbench 5. For comparison, the base-model 2019 Mac Pro gets a 7955 on the same benchmark test. dabourzannan
Apple will end up as a mobile phone manufacturer if they keep going the way they do now. Unless sometime in the future they change policy and invest more money in their computer business.
