Intel Rocket Lake CPUs will NOT supported on B460 or H410 chipsets

Rocket lake Announcements have been rocky, so to say. There has been quite a lot of confusion about what motherboards in the 400 series will support the Socket LGA1200 processors.

Perhaps you can remember several posts back in January, where for example, in an official MSI account, a customer service employee confirmed that Rocket Lake processors and motherboards would get released in late Marchand mentioned that current LGA1200 motherboards would receive support for the new CPUs, these would include H410, B460, and Z490 chipsets. Z490 motherboards will be the first to receive an update.

Well, that last bit is not the case at all,. Intel just posted a support note indicating that only Z490 and H470 will offer Rocke-Lake Support. We think it has to do with the power distribution of the lower specced chipset motherboards. Rocket Lake can haul up to 250 Watts for a minute under load for the fastest processors. And you'd need a capable mobo + cooling for that. Considering all desktop users and games here on Guru3D have such a chipset, we doubt it's a real problem.

Here's what Intel now writes on their website: Knowledge - Content-Type Compatibility - Article ID 000058324

What are you seeing?

Intel Z490 and H470 chipset-based motherboards may not boot with the upcoming 11th Gen Intel® Core™ desktop processors.

Environment:

The Intel 400 Series Chipset is a scalable chipset designed for motherboards that support the 10th Gen and upcoming 11th Gen Intel® Core desktop processors. The motherboard BIOS is a key component to maintaining this broad compatibility while enabling processor innovations on the platform.

How to fix it:

Intel Z490 and H470 chipset-based motherboards may require a BIOS update to boot the upcoming 11th Gen Intel® Core™ desktop processors. Intel recommends that you update the BIOS on your Intel 400 Series Chipset-based systems for compatibility with the upcoming 11th Gen Intel® Core™ desktop processors.

Note Motherboards based on Intel B460 or H410 chipsets are not compatible with the upcoming 11th Gen Intel Core processors.
