Today is Patch Tuesday, and that means that it's time for all supported versions of Windows to get updated. In the world of Windows 10, that still means every version except for version 1511, although different versions are only supported on certain SKUs. Windows 10 is a Microsoft product, so don't be surprised that support lifecycles ended up being much more complicated than originally intended.

Ever since March, Patch Tuesday has been the only time that Windows 10 was getting updated. Microsoft paused optional updates because of the COVID-19 pandemic; however, things will be back to normal this month.

If you're on the latest version of Windows 10, version 2004, then you'll get KB4565503, bringing the build number to 19041.388. You can manually download it here, and these are the highlights:

Quote
  • Improves security in the Microsoft Store.
  • Updates to improve security when using input devices (such as a mouse, keyboard, or stylus).
  • Updates to improve security when Windows performs basic operations.
  • Updates for storing and managing files.
  • Updates an issue that might cause certain games and applications to have visual distortion when resizing in windowed mode or switching from full screen to window mode.
  • Updates to improve security when using Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge Legacy.
  • Updates an issue that might prevent some applications from printing documents that contain graphics or large files.
  • Updates an issue that might prevent you from connecting to OneDrive using the OneDrive app.

Here's the full list of fixes:

Quote
  • Addresses an issue in certain apps that use the ImeMode property to control Input Method Editor (IME) mode in Windows 10, version 2004 (the May 2020 Update). For example, this issue prevents input mode from automatically switching to Kanji or Hiragana. For more information, see KB4564002 and the blog post, Getting the May 2020 Update Ready for Release - UPDATED.
  • Addresses an issue that might prevent you from using PowerShell to change the system locale on Server Core platforms.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause certain games and applications to have visual distortion when resizing in windowed mode or switching from full screen to window mode.
  • Addresses an issue that might cause lsass.exe to fail with the error message, “A critical system process, C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000008. The machine must now be restarted."
  • Addresses an issue that might prevent some applications from printing documents that contain graphics or large files after installing Windows Updates released June 9, 2020.
  • Addresses an issue that might prevent you from connecting to OneDrive using the OneDrive app. This issue occurs on some older devices or on devices that have older apps, which use legacy file system filter drivers. As a result, this might prevent these devices from downloading new files or opening previously synced or downloaded files.
  • Security updates to the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, the Microsoft Store, Windows Graphics, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Media, Windows Shell, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Management, Windows Kernel, Windows Hybrid Cloud Networking, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Update Stack, Windows MSXML, Windows File Server and Clustering, Windows Remote Desktop, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge Legacy, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

There's also one known issue that's caused by this cumulative update specifically, as opposed to the many known issues in Windows 10 version 2004 as a whole.

Symptom Workaround
When using some apps, such as Microsoft Excel, users of the Microsoft Input Method Editor (IME) for Chinese and Japanese might receive an error, or the app might stop responding or close when attempting to drag using the mouse. For more information and workaround steps, please see KB4564002.

If you're on Windows 10 version 1909 or 1903, you'll be getting KB4565483, bringing the build number to 16363.959 or 18362.959, respectively. You can manually download it here, and these are the highlights:

Quote
  • Updates to improve security when using Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge Legacy.
  • Updates to improve security when using Microsoft Office products.
  • Updates to improve security when using input devices (such as a mouse, keyboard, or stylus).
  • Improves security in the Microsoft Store.
  • Updates to improve security when Windows performs basic operations.
  • Updates for storing and managing files.
  • Updates an issue that might prevent some applications from printing documents that contain graphics or large files.

Here's the full list of fixes:

Quote
  • Addresses an issue with loading Browser Helper Objects in Microsoft Edge IE mode.
  • Security updates to Internet Explorer, the Microsoft Scripting Engine, Windows App Platform and Frameworks, Windows Apps, Microsoft Graphics Component, Windows Input and Composition, Windows Media, Windows Shell, the Microsoft Store, Microsoft Edge Legacy, Windows Cloud Infrastructure, Windows Fundamentals, Windows Management, Windows Kernel, Windows Storage and Filesystems, Windows Update Stack , Windows MSXML, Windows File Server and Clustering, Windows Remote Desktop, and the Microsoft JET Database Engine.

This one also has one known issue:

Symptom Workaround
After installing this update on a Windows 10 device with a wireless wide area network (WWAN) LTE modem, reaching the internet might not be possible. However, the Network Connectivity Status Indicator (NCSI) in the notification area might still indicate that you are connected to the internet. We are working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

If you're on Windows 10 version 1809, Microsoft will be moving you to version 2004 soon since 1809 is nearing the end of support. For now, you'll get KB4558998, bringing the build number to 17763.1339. You can manually download it here, and these are the highlights:

Quote
  • Updates to improve security when using Internet Explorer and Microsoft Edge Legacy.
  • Updates to improve security when Windows performs basic operations.
  • Updates to improve security when using Microsoft Office products.
  • Updates to improve security when using input devices (such as a mouse, keyboard, or stylus).

This one also has one known issue:

Symptom Workaround
After installing KB4493509, devices with some Asian language packs installed may receive the error, "0x800f0982 - PSFX_E_MATCHING_ COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND."
  1. Uninstall and reinstall any recently added language packs. For instructions, see Manage the input and display language settings in Windows 10.
  2. Select Check for Updates and install the April 2019 Cumulative Update. For instructions, see Update Windows 10.

Note If reinstalling the language pack does not mitigate the issue, reset your PC as follows:

  1. Go to the Settings app > Recovery.
  2. Select Get Started under the Reset this PC recovery option.
  3. Select Keep my Files.

Microsoft is working on a resolution and will provide an update in an upcoming release.

Those are the updates that are supported for all versions of Windows 10. These are the rest, which are supported under various conditions:

Microsoft releases a new Windows 10 20H2 build to the Beta channel

1574513479_20h2-pc3-2_story.jpg

Today is Patch Tuesday, meaning that all supported versions of Windows got updated. That includes the latest update, Windows 10 version 2004, and that means that 20H2 in the Beta channel is getting an update as well.

Remember, 20H2 works exactly the same way that Windows 10 version 1909 works. It gets the exact same KB updates as its predecessor, and the build number is one higher. The only difference is an enablement package.

Microsoft announced the new build in the Beta channel today, and it's KB4565503. Obviously, it has pretty much the same changelog as the update for the May 2020 Update. Here's what got fixed:

  • We fixed an issue that might prevent you from using PowerShell to change the system locale on Server Core platforms.
  • We fixed an issue that might cause certain games and applications to have visual distortion when resizing in windowed mode or switching from full screen to window mode.
  • We fixed an issue that causes lsass.exe to fail with the following error message, “A critical system process, C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000008. The machine must now be restarted.”
  • We fixed an issue that might prevent some applications from printing documents that contain graphics or large files after installing Windows Updates released June 9, 2020.
  • We fixed an issue that might prevent you from connecting to OneDrive using the OneDrive app.

You can grab today's update through Windows Update, or it will be installed automatically. In fact, since this is actually a production update that's available to Insiders, you can download it from the Update Catalog as well.
