Karlston
Windows 10 KB4556799 update is causing audio issues and data loss for some users Last week, Microsoft released Windows 10 KB4556799 cumulative update as a part of the Patch Tuesday update. The update brought some new features and improvements to the operating system but it looks to have also included some bugs. First spotted by Windows Latest, it looks like KB4556799 is causing audio issues and temporary data loss for some users. According to Reddit (1, 2), Microsoft answers forum and the Feedback Hub, users are facing issues ranging from problems with audio driver configuration to automatic driver uninstallation. It seems like the issue can be fixed by disabling audio enhancements and reinstalling the Realtek driver. Audio issues are not the only one causing issues for Windows 10 users. According to users on Microsoft answers forum, users are also experiencing data loss. The silver lining here is that the issue seems to be temporary. As Microsoft loads a temporary profile during updates, it sometimes overrides the default user profile. This has been reported in the past but Microsoft never acknowledged the issue. Some users have confirmed that restarting the computer around six to eight times after the update loads back the default profile and restore all the user files. If the workarounds don’t help then you can head to Settings>Update and Security>View Update History>Uninstall updates, and uninstall the latest cumulative update. Once done, we recommend going back to Update settings and pausing the updates temporarily to ensure the problematic updates are not downloaded again. Karlston
Windows Latest: The May Win10 1903/1909 cumulative update knocks around audio drivers — and the misplaced data/temporary profile bug is still there Mayank Parmar at Windows Latest has an all-too-familiar round up of problems with this month’s Win10 version 1903 and 1909 cumulative update, KB 4556799: Users running Windows 10 May 2019 Update (Win10 version 1903) and November 2019 Update (Win10 version 1909) are reporting that the update is a serious fail with a wide range of issues including a broken audio adapter, temporary user profile, Blue Screen of Death, and even an uninformative error message during the installation process. As was the case last month, there are swarms of bug reports about this month’s cumulative update, running all over the web. As was the case last month, it isn’t clear how widespread the problems might be. Microsoft — assuming it knows the extent of the damage — isn’t saying anything. Of course. For details, see Parmar’s article, but the gist is: Realtek (and possibly other) audio drivers get scrambled. Parmar has a workaround. Microsoft still hasn’t fixed the temporary profile “missing data” bug that we’ve been railing about for months. MS hasn’t even acknowledged the bug, even though it’s been reported extensively on the Microsoft Answers forum, the Microsoft-posted Win10 Reddit thread and in the Microsoft Feedback Hub. There’s a wide array of blue screens, installation failures, and miscellaneous update halitosis. Can you corroborate any of the problems? Of course, we remain on MS-DEFCON 2. There’s no reason for “normal” Windows users to install this month’s patches. Yet. Karlston
Disastrous new Windows 10 update is causing serious issues for some people Blue Screen of Deaths, audio issues, search problems – the lot (Image credit: Shutterstock) Over the past few months, Microsoft has managed to release a series of problematic updates for Windows 10 that have caused serious issues for some people, and while we’d have hoped the situation would have improved, it seems like the company has just released its most disastrous Windows 10 update yet. While Windows 10 KB4556799 was supposed to be an important update for people running the two most recent versions of the operating system (May 2019 Update and November 2019 Update), it seems like it has in fact introduced a large number of problems instead. The list of reported problems reads a bit like a ‘greatest hits’ of previous Windows 10 update errors, with almost everything accounted for. So, some users on the Microsoft forum are reporting the dreaded Blue Screen of Death, which appears when your PC encounters a severe problem and has to restart. There have also been reports of a flickering white screen appearing after installing the update, system fonts being replaced and Windows 10 reverting back to the more limited S-Mode. As if they weren’t annoying enough, one user found that Outlook searches are now broken, while Windows Latest is reporting that Windows 10 KB4556799 is causing audio issues for some people, where the default audio output is changed, as well as the re-emergence of the Temporary user profile bug. This bug has affected previous Windows 10 updates, and it’s pretty nasty, as it creates and loads a default user profile when Windows 10 loads up, apparently deleting user files and changing any settings (such as desktop wallpaper and themes) back to the default settings. This makes Windows 10 KB4556799 one of the worst Windows 10 updates we’ve seen so far. How to fix it We don’t know how many people are affected by the update issues, and we’ve contacted Microsoft for comment. If you’ve downloaded the Windows 10 KB4556799 update and are encountering any issues, the best way to fix the problem is to uninstall the update. Open up the Settings app (the cog icon in the Start menu, or by pressing Windows + I on the keyboard), then click 'Update & Security'. From the window that appears, click 'Windows Update' on the left-hand menu, then 'View update history'. Click 'Uninstall updates' then select KB4556799 to uninstall it. The problems should now be fixed. You could also use the System Restore feature in Windows 10 to roll back your PC to a time when it was working correctly. Microsoft has yet to comment on these new problems, and as we stated so far it seems like the issues aren’t too widespread. If you installed the update and you’ve not experienced any problems, then you’ll be fine to continue with it installed.
