Windows 10 build 19541 is now available with Task Manager improvements

 

With the holiday season now over with, the Windows Insider program is back in motion, and Microsoft is releasing a new build of Windows 10 to Insiders in the Fast ring. Fast ring builds are no longer linked to a specific Windows 10 update, so we can't exactly say this build is part f the 20H2 development cycle.

 

As with the majority of the most recent releases, build 19541 doesn't actually come with a lot of new additions. It includes a new icon for when the user's location is being used, plus an update to the Task Manager:

As some keen eyed Insiders have noticed, we’ve updated the notification area icon for when an app is using your location. The new icon looks like this:

When you’re using the Details tab in Task Manager, we’ve added a new option to show the architecture of each process. If you’re interested, you can add it by right-clicking on a column header, choosing Select Columns, and selecting Architecture from the list.

Microsoft also highlight a recent update to the new Cortana app, though this isn't necessarily exclusive to those in the Fast ring:

Following up on our previous post, we want to let Insiders know that Bing Instant Answers and Timers are back online. We’re continuing to work on getting jokes (and other assistant conversations) back up and running, and appreciate your patience.

Microsoft is currently preparing to officially roll out the next feature update, which is Windows 10 20H1, but that update has mostly been finalized and is undergoing additional testing before it officially releases in a couple of months.

 

Build 19541 will be part of a future Windows 10 update, which may or not be 20H2. Since the features included in this release are fairly small, there should be no reason why it won't be included in the next feature update, but anything is possible now.

Here's what's fixed, improved, and still broken in Windows 10 build 19541

Today, Microsoft released the first windows 10 build of 2020 to Insiders in the Fast ring. Fast ring builds have moved on from Windows 10 20H1, and are now preparing future updates, so there are actually some changes worth noting, like Task Manager improvements.

 

As usual, though, the new build also comes with an array of fixes, improvements, and known issues that you'll want to be aware of before installing it. Here's what's been fixed for this release:

• We fixed an issue impacted System Settings reliability.
• We fixed an issue that could result in Windows Update “Reboot needed” notifications persisting reboot.
• We fixed an issue that could result in the update speed in Task Manager unexpectedly being set to Paused.
• We fixed an issue when using Narrator that could result in Start not saying the correct index of an app in the all apps list.
• We fixed an issue where the Search window wasn’t showing acrylic at the top.
• We fixed an issue from the previous build resulting in the Feedback Hub unexpectedly not showing store apps in the list of contexts when logging feedback under the Apps category. This same issue resulted in the symptom of apps continuing to show Install in the Microsoft Store, rather than Launch, after the app had been installed.

While there are some fixes on that list, build 19541 still includes a fairly long list of known issues, some of which are being introduced for the first time with this release. Microsoft is also not done highlighting compatibility issues with BattlEye software, despite the problem being around for months.

• BattlEye and Microsoft have found incompatibility issues due to changes in the operating system between some Insider Preview builds and certain versions of BattlEye anti-cheat software. To safeguard Insiders who might have these versions installed on their PC, we have applied a compatibility hold on these devices from being offered affected builds of Windows Insider Preview. • We’re looking into reports of the update process hanging for extended periods of time when attempting to install a new build.
• We’re looking into reports of certain external USB 3.0 drives not responding with Start Code 10 after they’re attached.
• The Optimize Drives Control Panel is incorrectly reporting that optimization has never run on some devices. Optimization is completing successfully, even though it is not reflected in the UI.
• The Documents section under Privacy has a broken icon (just a rectangle).
• Remote Desktop Connection crashes when attempting to connect to multiple sessions.
• Snipping isn’t working on secondary monitors.
• Timeline isn’t showing any activities.
• We’re investigating reports that Outlook search isn’t working for some Insiders.

Of course, a long list of issues is to be expected from Fast ring build, and that might make even more sense now that Fast ring builds aren't linked to specific Windows 10 feature updates. Microsoft will likely be testing new features in these builds, regardless of whether or not they're planned for the next Windows 10 release, so there's a good chance there will be some rough edges. If you're not comfortable with that uncertainty, you may want to stick with the Slow or Release Preview rings.
