Microsoft today announced that the free Windows 10 October 2018 Update is rolling out today. For those keeping track, this update is Windows 10 build 17763 and will bring Windows 10 to version 1809.

Windows 10 is being developed as a service, meaning it receives new features on a regular basis. Microsoft has released five major updates so far: November Update, Anniversary Update, Creators Update, Fall Creators Update, and April 2018 Update. The sixth one arrives this month.

As you can see, Microsoft has stopped naming Windows 10 updates. The company is now simply sticking with the month and year of release (two free feature updates are expected every year).

The Windows 10 October 2018 Update brings a dark theme for File Explorer, a new snipping experience, a cloud-powered clipboard, support for extended line endings in Notepad, integration with the Your Phone app, new web sign-in and fast sign-in features, a mixed reality flashlight feature, SwiftKey in the touch keyboard, and many other improvements. The highly anticipated Sets feature did not make the cut.

Windows 10 adoption started out very strong, but naturally slowed as the months progressed. Microsoft was aiming for 1 billion devices running Windows 10 in two to three years but backpedaled on that goal.

The operating system was installed on over 75 million PCs in its first four weeks and passed 110 million devices after 10 weeks, 200 million in under six months, 270 million after eight months, 300 million after nine months, 350 million after 11 months, 400 million after 14 months, 500 million after 21 months, and 600 million after 27 months. In September, after 37 months, it passed 700 million devices.

Got it via Windows update,  it lasted about three and half hours for me. No issues so far, but after that Zemana Antilogger updated first time.

I wait couple of days before I say NICE! 🤪

I gave up on Windows Update. Clean Installed here with Windows Media Creation Tool. In the past, any issues that crept up updating Windows 10 to a new version was because of upgrading using Windows Update. Twice a year, I clean install the new version, install all my programs then do an image with Macrium Reflect. Two times a year, rinse, repeat.

If you're still waiting for the Windows 10 update from 1803 to 1809, but that's not available on default update, go to the page

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10

and download the "Update now" tool or the Media Creation Tool and run the iso file.

Or use links

Windows 10 October 2018 Update (Version 1809) ISO Now Available for Download

Microsoft has officially started the public rollout of Windows 10 October 2018 Update (version 1809) to systems worldwide, and in addition to the automatic and manual download, a third option is also available.

The software giant has just published the official ISO images for the new OS feature update, allowing users to download and install it from scratch on their devices.

The ISOs are available on Microsoft’s Windows 10 download page, but there’s a catch. If you load this page in a Windows 10 browser, Microsoft instead serves you the Media Creation Tool, which is an application that assists you during the upgrade process.

In other words, you won’t be able to download the ISO images directly, but only via the Media Creation Tool developed by Microsoft.

However, skipping the Media Creation Tool part is still possible, and you can check out this tutorial to download Windows 10 ISOs directly. The only thing you need to do is change the user agent in order to unlock the ISO download links, and afterward, you just have to configure your download by selecting PC architecture and language.

ISO images are particularly helpful in the case of power users who want to update their systems manually, but they also come in handy to IT pros who can configure their own automatic update tasks for computers in their networks.

Furthermore, they can be used for testing purposes in virtual machines, but also for starting from scratch on a certain computer.

Windows 10 October 2018 Update comes with a wide array of improvements, and it’s rolling out to users as an automatic download in stages. Microsoft uses machine learning to determine which systems can update to version 1809 securely without hitting any compatibility issues, and if everything goes right, broad availability should be announced by the end of the year.

Definitely NICE, but GREAT could be the right expression! It could be the greatest Windows ever! 🤓

I did the update but the built-in windows apps and Edge lost internet connectivity. I had connectivity as non-windows apps, e.g. Firefox, worked fine.

I went back to 1803 and all is working again

It has nothing related to the update or with Windows 1809, this is your system problem. Maybe you did not update the necessary drivers. (This is not a rule, but in some cases it may be necessary. It may also be necessary to re-install some programs or apps and re-set some of the settings. Sometimes the right-click submenu added by the user also disappears etc. It is completely normal.)

@Kalju All my drivers are up to date. It was not any third party programs that had a problem, it was the built-in MS apps. I did attempt to reinstall them but that threw up errors. So, I disagree with your assessment, I do not believe it is my system, I believe it is a flawed update.

Another difference the direct download ISO's uses install.wim and the ISO's or flash drives created by the Media Creation Tool uses install.esd files.

Edit: Only some users will understand the difference...

  1. See, if something happens once, then it can be a coincidence or casual;
  2. If the midagle manages two times, it is possible that this is also a coincidence or casual;
  3. if the same happens three or more times in a row, then this is already system or systematical.
  4. I have installed it on many different computers and there have been no problems at all, then it is probably not a coincidence.
