YouTube pushing non-skippable ads

Google-owned Youtube is expanding the concept of non-skippable advertisements on its platform for the creators to monetise their content and earn more revenue. The change will begin rolling out from next week and eligible creators will get a notification in their dashboard, company officials said in a video uploaded on YouTube's Creator Insider channel, late on Friday.

YouTube revealed in a new video for content creators recently that it plans to push unskippable video ads on the video hosting site. The video "Want to earn more money from ad revenue?" was published on the official Creator Insider channel on YouTube. All publishers on YouTube that may monetize videos on the site will get options to run unskippable ads on their channels.

Non-skippable video advertisements were only available to select partners up to this point. The change unlocks the monetization option for all publishers on the site and enables the new ad format automatically on videos that are monetized using the "skip after 5 seconds" ad format.

Earlier in January, YouTube had fixed a time limit for advertisements to 20 seconds.

YouTube's default ad format, which displays video ads that users may skip after 5 seconds of playtime will remain available on the site. The new maximum length for unskippable video ads is 15 to 20 seconds depending on the location of the viewer.

Video content that is already monetized on YouTube will have the ad format switched on as well so that non-skippable ads may be played to viewers automatically as well. Publishers and content creators who don't want to display unskippable ads on their channel need to change the default or make changes to ad settings for individual videos.

YouTube claims that unskippable advertisement yields a higher revenue than skippable advertisements on the site. Not all creators seem to be onboard with the new default ad type on YouTube; some voiced concern that unskippable advertisement would worsen the user experience, that some users would stop playback if they can't skip the video, and that YouTube's claim that revenue would rise was not true in all cases.

Expert Users of ad-blockers might look forward to overcoming such ads. as a challenge — personally, don't see how the incorporation of non-skippable ads. is not gonna get itself withdrawn sooner than later.

I watched 2 documentaries on YouTube lat night i didn't have no ads in YouTube using Ublock  Origin . Hulu has been doing this for years and also its a USA only site but back when they used RTMP you could download there videos with Getflv  with no ads then they changed to  new video protection and most of there shows are for the pay version only. YouTube is easy to get around because there videos are not very  protected  you can use  MPV player + youtube-dl and   Send to MPV player addon  ,  SMTube witch works with SMplayer + youtube-dl , FreeTube  also theirs one for Android as well posted here  or you can download the videos with  one of the many of the video downloaders  .

The problem with  BitChute and DTube while there great sites no one hardly uses them yet.

The main problem is that since so few people use any video-sharing websites that aren't YouTube, those websites get almost no views, so advertisers don't put their ads there. With no ad revenue, the websites have a hard time growing, mainly since content creators need ad revenue to keep creating content. If they don't get any money for making videos, they simply won't make videos. Hopefully, YouTubers who are getting too many of their videos demonetized will start moving to alternative video sites such as Minds, Gab, BitChute, or PewTube, which—unlike YouTube—are dedicated to free speech.

Blocking ads with filters is wackamole they had filters for youtube before now they stop updating them , from there page.

Blocking video ads is kind of like Whack-A-Mole. The domain names often change, so users feedback is very helpful. Also there's is no guarantee that this list will block 100% of the ads, however the results were promising. One should also note that the actual content is also delivered using similar domains, for example rx---sn-gwpa-cags.googlevideo.com Blocking this will prevent the video from playing!

Everyone want to use projects like these but no one wants to contribute to them to keep them going, because its above most users iq level .

Vimeo have a lot of videos there audio quality is much better than youtube by the way so do pirate streaming portals have a lot of videos   ...I don't use YouTube a lot just for watching documentaries and to see what new music is out . Also they have some old music videos from the 80s and 90s you cant find no were but sometimes they be on vimeo in better quality .

The problem is people dont  post videos for shits and giggles,  they do it to make money and any free video sites the uploders only profit from ads , some are leaving YouTube for sites were you have to pay up front to watch there videos and they are making way more money than  they did with YouTube,  most got famous from YouTube but now you have to pay to watch there videos  and Independents are not like Hollywood or Bollywood  and the Mainstream music industry were you can block some ads on a warez site and watch it or download it  . There stuff is not easy to find and  they need to be paid  ... Do you go to work every day for free?    .

These filters  still get updated  from easylist  and you can add them to other adblockers besides ABP for annoyances

https://youtube.adblockplus.me/

I'm testing the ones for Remove YouTube Suggestions now because this the only problem i have with Ublock Origin witch are not ads but and annoyance but they have different kinds of filters  you can try for different things and they been around along time . Adblockers suppose to block google ads by default  and Ublock  Origin always done good job  with Google ads, another thing that helps is clean you're catch every so often  as ads are cached .

More info

https://webtrickz.com/remove-unwanted-content-from-youtube-with-adblock-plus-youtube-customizer/

But if they ever figure out how to get around  Ublock Origin i  will just always open the videos with mpv+youtube-dl also i have Freetube.

Hooktube use to be a good site to watch Youtube, but they changed there API and all they are now is a watered down version of YouTube,  so you may well just use YouTube are a 3rd party player. They been cracking down on 3rd party sites more than they have been apps.

The last time i had problems with ads in Youtube i think I was using Brave Browser  with there built in adblocker but i just added some filters for some other country and it stopped them.

These ads are not new but its like this guy complaining 3 months ago  that allows ads on YouTube so content creators get paid everyone is going start blocking  them if they use these long ads and they want get paid even from people who want to help them.

https://old.reddit.com/r/assholedesign/comments/8gf6d1/youtube_forced_me_to_watch_a_3_minute_unskippable/

It's like when  I sign in to reddit i only use tor browser because that site is watched by the U.S. Government the people that make tor browser say don't be using no addons that don't come with it and I don't find reddit ads to be annoying and they never set NOD32  off,  so i dont mind helping out if they dont have malware infected or annoying ones like YouTube has.  I use  in my host urls to block crypto miners i hate them more than ads.

No its not  a good no more for you it use to be . And it's no better for privacy

As of July 2018, Hooktube no longer functions as it did before, and is now only a lightweight YouTube.

"☀July 16: YouTube api features are back but mp4 <video> is replaced with the standard YT video embed. HookTube is now effectively just a light-weight version of youtube and useless to the 90% of you primarily concerned with denying Google data and seeing videos blocked by your governments."

http://youtube-alternatives.wikia.com/wiki/Hooktube.com

This one is better for privacy from Google

https://www.invidio.us/  but it can't unblock geo restricted videos but youtube-dl  still can lol ...If i get a blocked video i dont fool with my vpn  i jut click send to mpv same with sites that have to much ads all these sites

https://rg3.github.io/youtube-dl/supportedsites.html

Some sites you need a vpn but not youtube but i have TV Downloader with youtube-dl  with VPN i can download from NBC and BBC.

Never heard of ublocker — but, there's no ad-blocker on earth that blocks all kinds of ads. with pre-configured hosts. <_<

ublocker

Sorry my mistake the name is ublock origin. I also use with a modified hosts file from http://winhelp2002.mvps.org . Also I have some protection against ads and frauds on my router.

Surely no adblocker will protect you from all kinds of ads, but it updates itself frequently.

Ah OK, uBlock Origin is one of my fav. ad-blockers.

As far the modified hosts file from http://winhelp2002.mvps.org is concerned, it will never ever block all kinds of advertisements (no matter how frequently it receives updates) — for that kind of perfection, one would need to be able to create custom ad-blocking rules. ;)

BTW, those unskippable ads. have not yet been implemented at YouTube — they're gonna be operational only around next week (hopefully, someone can bring it to our attention — would be interesting.) ^_^

Help! I’m Getting Unskippable 38-Minute Ads on YouTube

October 17, 2017

Last February, Google announced that it would do away with unskippable 30-second video ads on YouTube.  The decision came after the popular video platform found that the ads harmed consumers with small data plans.

In a statement, a Google spokesperson explained that the company would terminate unskippable videos in 2018.

We’ve decided to stop supporting 30-second unskippable ads as of 2018 and focus instead on formats that work well for both users and advertisers.

While the company would put an end to 30-second ads, it didn’t comment on smaller, unskippable 6-second ads.  BGR also noted that 15 and 20-second unskippable ads would “remain an option that advertisers on YouTube can take advantage of.”

But, can advertisers also promote ads longer than 30 seconds?  Say, over 30 minutes?  That’s what users on popular social news aggregation platform Reddit apparently found earlier this morning.

https://www.digitalmusicnews.com/2017/10/17/youtube-unskippable-ads/

They had 30-second unskippable ads before and they claimed they was going to stop it

But there are reports of all over all internet of people still getting them the whole time,  they never stopped it really.

This post here is from 3 months ago about unskippable ads explains everything the OP did 3 months ago

Well, how would you feel if I said the content creator explicitly picked long, unskippable ads to run on their videos?

[–]Renitus[S] 9 points

Is that how it works? I have always been under the impression that creators don't get to choose what ads specifically show on their videos.

[–]F@@kFaceC@ntT@at 14 points

IIRC they don't choose what advertiser's are shown but they do choose what type. I.e, ads in the middle or at the start, skippable / unakippable. The more asshole-ish the as type is, the more pay. (I think).

[–]Renitus[S] 10 points

Wasn't aware of that at all, thanks for enlightening me on the situation. Honestly thought the creators just chose to monetize their videos, then YouTube decides the rest.

So they all ready been beta testing it with some users . The only thing that changing from the way is was  back in 2017 is they are going let content creators pick the  kind of ads they want to use,  but they been testing it along time.

The way Hulu ads are they will give you 2 are 3 long ads before the show and some in the middle of a show it like watching iptv.

spotify and deezer have unskippable ads too  ublock origan blocks them if you use the web player in your browser  instead of the apps .spotify is working on making them skippable now there beta testing skippable ads witch will help free users who use apps.

i'm now a yt premium so i don't get ads at all but if it were not for letting me upload 300.000 songs

i wouldn't pay for it.

my biggest problem with youtube is:

1. right pane shows only crap you have seen or clearly unrelated things

2. gui nothing has happened since 2004. even pornsites has way better gui's.

3. not able to ban sertain channels.

since 2004 yt has tried to refer other channels that doesn't reflect me or my views.

i watch mostly us and uk media yet i live in sweden. still they refer lets just say

clips for 9-14 yrs old - i'm at 43 i still enjoy cartoons but not that into comedians for

minors.

digg grew to big and reddit is just too much nowadays. even the rated bit is shait.

besides when they forced  ads i just pan to another chrome window until it's done.

unless they have made an interesting ad i actually enjoy watching.

I use YouTube to listen to music but now I have an apple music free trial which is great but it'll be back to YouTube Once that's over. There's a plug-in for Foobar2000 where you can listen to YouTube through foobar and it cuts out the ads but I don't always have a Windows computer with me especially in my car. Just playing outside the app takes a lot of fiddling around without YouTube premium or YouTube red or whatever it is nowadays.

I will never pay money into the cloud. There's enough free hosting out there with just a little searching and most of my media stays local anyway. Maybe if I had the bandwidth I expand my server to the Internet so I can listen to my home stuff away from home but my ISP throttles video anyway so I can't really justify paying for stuff like Netflix and YouTube.

I have a few pay movies through YouTube or Google Play but I got them through Google Rewards app on my phone. Even though I've downloaded the movies through the app on my phone, it caches them in encrypted chunks that only YouTube or play movies app can read. So even though I went to forego the rent option for the buy option in the YouTube dialogue, I don't own anything except the licensing rights to these movies.

Hard copy or I got to leave it alone, they can have YouTube, it's just a data mining farm at this point, Vimeo is better so is pretty much every video host.

What I'm concerned about for some time now is that them doing something which prevents or breaks videos when one uses any adblocker out there. For now, it looks like it's made such a way that if ad servers are not connectable, then ads are skipped, what if they change it.

you see, the problem is, the current situation is the ideal scenario for them. SOME people watch their ads, and some block them. they get at least that. the moment they get greedy and try to make it worse, they're the ones losing, because then EVERYONE will block the ads. and of course, that's not good for business.
