Perfect end to a perfect month: Yet another Win10 1709 cumulative update, KB 4058258

Today is the 15th day this month that we’ve seen Windows patches, yanked patches, patches of patches and re-re-re-patches. Welcome to the third cumulative update for Win10 Fall Creators Update this month.

patch on top of Windows logo
Thinkstock/Microsoft

Microsoft told us three weeks ago that Win10 Fall Creators Update, version 1709, was ready for enterprise deployment. Since then, we’ve seen the early January patch yanked because it tanked AMD machines. Then, after the first patch was reinstated, we got two more cumulative updates. In the past three weeks.

I guess that’s what Microsoft now means by “Current Branch for Business” and/or “Semi-Annual Channel.”

The latest salvo in the story arrived today with KB 4058258, which brings Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, version 1709, to build 16299.214. It’s headed out the Windows Automatic Update chute right now.

Along with the 1709 cumulative update, we’re getting another “WaaSMedic” Remediation Shell, KB 4074608 — a Servicing Stack update released yesterday that, per @abbodi86 on AskWoody:

Fixes and resets update-related parts to their “supported” configuration. It restores registry settings, services statuses, schedule tasks, it clears out disk space, and launches UpdateAssistant.exe if installed. Mainly it’s meant to pave the way to receive the latest updates, whether quality updates, or feature update to latest Windows 10 version

It’s an MSI package not a regular update, doesn’t require a reboot. It has more than 12 releases so far.

He goes on to say:

Servicing Stack updates are bundled with cumulative updates in version 1709. You may notice that the 1709 SSU has a distinguished version (i.e. 16299.122.1.0), not the generic version like other updates before (i.e. 10.0.1.2).

Servicing Stack updates won’t be listed in Windows Update history, but you can find it in Installed Updates

Here’s this month’s hall of patching shame:

There’s also a newly updated KB article, KB 4073757, that covers many details with Windows, Meltdown and Spectre. It has lengthy lists of links to Security Advisories — Microsoft, Intel, AMD, Nvidia and more — guidance for all sorts of different kinds of hardware, a list of computer manufacturers — Acer, Dell, Epson, Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo, LG, NEC, Panasonic, Samsung, Toshiba and Vaio — with links to their advisories, and a promise of patches yet to come for  Server 2012 and Server 2008 SP2.

Something to look forward to.

Join us for a CBB break on the AskWoody Lounge.

All the linux fanboys right now are screaming for everyone to move over.. :tooth:

It's not "fanboys", there are expert people that know a lot about this useful OS and for many reasons, they're telling the world to move to Linux

I was a Windows "Foolsider" since October 2014 to October 2017, sincerely .... It's very very very very dissapointed ...

Microsoft people are laughing in our face !! The ugly Donna Sarkar and the bald Steve Ballmer all day long they travel around the world and talk in convention ... While the home users suffer a lot because of this f*cking people

And don't forget the fool WZor, that is a f*cking Greasy of Microsoft, everyday they re-tweet (share in Twitter) all the actions or movement of the sh*tty people of Microsoft.

Every ISO or Update that Microsoft Release, he made an image with Donna Sarkar, Steve Ballmer or Jen Gentlemen (that she believes that is younger... she's like 60 years old)

https://twitter.com/wzornet

He's simple a looser I won't surprise if one day he kiss the a$$ of one of those horrible and noisy women.

The only people who use it are those who seemingly can navigate through a terminal all day...

There's nothing wrong with Windows, I disagree, yet everyone has their own preference..

Now don't even tell me you think anyone in their right mind would use a distro like ArchLinux unless they're either #1 seriously that bored, #2 have their tinfoils hats on because they think they're being spied on with Windows, or #3 total nerds that don't use anything but Linux..

Hold up, I don't want that answer...

:eekout:

That clip sums up the experience for Linux users :tooth:

Waiting for the day the grandma or grandpa comes and tells me they want to switch to ArchLinux or Gentoo

You know bro?? First of all, I will never use ArchLinux :s I don't want to write in a terminal all day long and I'm not a nerd :s

I was talking about Ubuntu or Linux Mint :) Could you give me your opinion about those distros please???

And about being spied by Microsoft or by Ubuntu, the thing I get very angry It's because: Microsoft People laugh in your face (with the F*CKING Diagnostic Viewer) while the ugly Donna Sarkar (that she cheats on her husband with Microsoft men) travels around the world, eat sushi and have a wonderful life... While people like my mom and wife (for example) are annoyed with the "New F*CKING Windows" :( !

Ubuntu requires knowledge of using a terminal. I used Budgie by the way for a week till I trashed it

I don't think they're user friendly, at all, because eventually, you're going to have to open the damn terminal and start typing... that's just how it works

The other problem is that win32 compatibility sucks, you know it took me 3 hours to figure out how to hack a copy of office 2013 on there, and using something like libreOffice wasn't ideal, for me at least.

PlayOnLinux was way too buggy, and wine, finding the dependencies for programs took hours on end...

Bottomline, if the OS has less than 1% of the marketshare, there's a reason for it, because it's meant for devs or more tech savvy people

I disagree with Microsoft people laughing in your face, then what's Windows Subsystem for Linux all about..?

If you all really don't like Windows 10 go back to Windows 7, but obviously it's a lot easier to handle...

Regards.

I know :( and I know it will be hard in the beggining but I could be stay safe in Linux :s I guess ...

I know perfectly that Linux is Not user friendly :(

The Win32 Compatibility is terrible and I will not use any of my programs that works well in Windows. I play a lot in Windows, I mean, I have a lot of games, like GTA V and I know It won't be the same performance like Windows

Yeah, Maybe Linux also spied you ... but don't have the "balls" to laughin in your face... I mean, it's discrete, while Microsoft is scoundrel.

I use right now Windows 8.1 and In my opinion, it's the most beautiful Windows of all times :)

Agreed. Too many ignorantly dismiss it because the original Windows 8 was missing a Start Menu and booted into tablet mode.

Windows 8.1 fixed the latter and M$ added a tile-infested Start Menu which is oh-so-easily replaced with a third-party Windows 7 Start Menu (I use Stardock's Start8).

IMO, 8.1 is still Microsoft's newest version of Windows that is stable, mature and user-controllable.

(  apologies for bringing the discussion back to being ever so slightly on-topic :P  )

I've used nearly every form of Linux and Windows and both have good and bad points......I have no problem using a terminal.

I also agree that windows 8.1 with a start menu was the most stable windows I ever used.

I just need to open parentheses here:
Stable Microsoft systems passed away in September 2016... And I mean the three generations before the "best OS ever"... Close parentheses...
@Karlston I apologize but I see the need to supplement your post...

i just want to share my experience in windows 10 enterprise 2016 ltsb

when something is wrong on system restore error, searching on google how to fix it i just delete the wrong registry key then restart and then windows won't boot normally, i got bsod message drive is not accessible, so i go startup repair the error not fix so i decided to refresh reset windows through windows recovery, and then while resetting about 80% my laptop fan become loud noisy & the screen become blank not accessible only i heard loud fan noise, so i decided to turn off my laptop completely power unplug, and turn on again but no more display even the bios so i think windows corrupted my bios, i just manage to boot again through bios reset using pin, but after i turn off the laptop i wont boot again unless i reset the bios again, i think my laptop is dead but after i think maybe the bios is just corrupted i boot my laptop again through bios reset i try to reflash the bios and then flash successful then restart and yes my laptop bootup again normally even if i turnoff completely but the flash is not completely reflash because i need to buy new battery it won't flash if battery not attached, because my laptop battery is dead a year ago so maybe i need to buy a new one, i just flash bios.rom not the ec.rom i don't know how to flash bios.rom with ec.rom without the battery, maybe someone can help me i use linux now for this laptop toshiba satellite p850. sorry for my english.

so narrowminded people here.

not only does windows pick newer drivers which screws your pc up. my dell laptop

graphics driver got uptaded by microsoft making my pc still be on but show a black

screen.

after every install every bit that you have tweaked is changed for no reason at all.

the forced upgrades is the real dealbreaker though. then there pops up a menu so

if you're writing the same time and happen to press space bar or enter windows

takes it for a granted install and your're not able to use pc.

after last upgrade instead of just turning off screen it goes to a screensaver. it

behaves like a 3 year old child.

upgrades in it self has improved some it can sometimes load all and install them

at the same time but mostly, and sertainly if its +10 updates it says unable to

install try again. now you're in the eternal circle of windows. the only way to get

around it is to download fixes randomly and install it and hope windows picks

up. windows shows in percentage where you're at in you install but after 100%

it takes half the time it took to reach 100% in the first time.

for the sake of windows i download all windows update files.

downloading updates seem to very slow nowadays, size doesn't seem to

matter anymore. in the time it has downloaded the required updates you

could download all top ten iso-images +60 mbit.

random crashes where they ask you if you want to send a report to windows,

they got millions of these and they're not using it.

i'm used to windows 3-7 at a professional level, not networking but setting it

up and using it. from windows 8 and onwards my laptop got 10-20% faster

but since the ui is far too confusing you loose that time in just looking for

installing removing programs. programs aren't apps. the last nagging window

that tries to pusch unsecure people towards using the apps and mostly the

paid apps.

alt+tab doesn't function correctly if you pick a program window to be always

on top an app will override it.

last but not least, usb preformance while copying files back and forth on

windows you're cpu is taking most power it has and you ca bearly use it.

while using ubuntu 16.04 on an old pentium laptop you can copy loads back

and forth and still use the computer without hiccups.

so what am i saying.

windows 7 as a gui was pure perfection. fix the problems above and we can

use it with ease.

the calling home and sharing updates to other windows users should not be

set as default. be sure to download shutup10 byoo software if you want to

enable privacy.

as always happy hackin'

Yes, I use Windows 10x64 Pro from the first day, if was released officially.

The only version, what I have never used is Vista. As much I remember, tested couple days and came back to XP Pro till the Win 7 released.

I have Windows 10 Pro x64 in a Virtual Machine (VMware Workstation Pro) because I still being an Insider :)

I used all Windows: Since Windows 95 to Windows 10; In 2007, I was in love with Windows Vista, because it was very beautiful but a very very complicated :(

You came back to XP ?? Wow :s In my opinion that was the most ugly Windows in all the time (Windows 95/98/ME/2000 were "ugly" because of the technology and the past millenium jaja). Windows XP, that was released in 2001, it suppoused to be more beautiful but Microsoft only focused on performance (that was the best until now).

Thank you for the information, Archanus.

However, I am getting other small updates like flash player or ms edge updates through windows update.

So it's working fine but I assume Microsoft has disabled these specific updates for AMD machines.

I'll rather wait it out for now.
