Windows 10 will (finally) limit the bandwidth reserved for updates

At the release of the Fall Creators Update, Windows 10 will be able to accurately manage the recovery of updates. Microsoft responds to one of the most frequently criticized criticisms of its system, which tended to suck up a good part of the bandwidth.

The 16237 pre-release of Windows 10, released last week, silently added options that many expected, especially if they are part of the Insider program. You can fine-tune the behavior of Windows Update when it recovers updates, whether it's monthly patches, cumulative packages, or even major releases.

Do not seal small connections

However, since the first version of the system, many criticisms were raised to denounce bandwidth management. Windows Update thus aspired to all that available, unless you have a particularly fast connection. On fiber, not really problems, but the many users with a classic ADSL connection had to take their trouble patiently.

The worry was particularly significant during major updates or the recovery of the latest builds for Insider testers. With downloads greater than 3 GB, the connection became unusable as long as Windows had not finished.

In case of concern ...

In the 16237 build, options appeared in the Settings. You need to go to Windows Update, Advanced Options, Delivery Optimization and then Advanced Options again (which probably explains why these settings were not found the first few days). As shown in the caption below, you can specify a percentage of bandwidth allocated for updates, but also a percentage for the P2P model of updates to other PCs on the Internet, or even a threshold in Go to ne Not exceed.

windows 10 update options bande passante

All testers currently in the fast channel can activate this option, which will be used as soon as the next pre-download is downloaded. Of course, if they have a large throughput, they may be unnecessary. Note that Microsoft still explains that Windows 10 normally allocates the bandwidth "dynamically", so depending on the use of the machine.

Good news.

Will Windows actually respect the users choice? Or is it like the case with privacy settings that Windows completely ignored?

LOL  people on capped bandwidth are hoping they will  , Were i'm on unlimited internet most movies i download are many times over a standard windows 10 update and i do updates on 3 OS and a 1 OS laptop every month and have other pcs with OS i update if i decide too turn them on . Just the thing is I can only use one PC  at a time unless I'm using another PC for a unattended task.

But i fell the capped bandwidth users pain because not so many years i go i was on satellite internet and was capped worse then most people are . But this will benefit Microsoft too more users on capped  bandwidth may decide too buy a PC or something Windows 10 if  it's not such a bandwidth hog if they ever fix it that is.

Still  this don't sell me on Redstone 3 because bandwidth never effected me on Windows 10. I have a feeling it will be a very long time before i use Windows 10 as my daily driver again i used it for over a year and went back too Windows 8.1. When they  decided to push out 2 updates a year it made me change my mind because  upgrades  are painful  and clean installs have caused me too have clean install my Linux os as well were they tie in together in the boot manger.   I rather enjoy my OS  than  having too reinstall it every 6 mths.  i can read about all the problems people are having and laugh about it . were i'm a Linux user it always has had too be a clean install  because Windows 10 don't play nice on upgrades. Windows 8.1 I never have too clean install and +1 it's very stable .:P
