The new Windows 10 File Explorer

Microsoft is already working on a touch-optimized File Explorer for Windows 10, and the Creators Update does come with an early build that can be activated with a short trick, but the company is working on a much more advanced for the final version of Redstone 3.

Called Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, the next Windows 10 version will come with a new File Explorer that Microsoft teased at Build today, showing a design that uses Project Neon (officially called Fluent Design) and which brings it in line with the rest of universal apps.

As you can see in the screenshot below, the new File Explorer lets you quickly browse your locations using the sidebar on the left, while the right pane is used for browsing files. The screenshot shows photo thumbnails and the address bar at the top.

At this point, the design doesn’t really seem to be truly touch-optimized, as the sidebar options seem to be more appropriate for a mouse, but there’s a chance that this is just an early version that Microsoft used only for today’s demo.

The File Explorer should make it to insider builds in the coming days and weeks, and expect it to receive major improvements by the time the operating system goes live in September.

As for the desktop File Explorer, there’s still no word on whether it’ll stick to the existing design or if this version replaces it completely, but there’s no doubt that the file manager will get a major update with the next OS update.
