Calibre 2.83 released

After a well-deserved break of almost a month, Calibre developer Kovid Goyal announced this past weekend the immediate availability for download of Calibre 2.83 maintenance update to the open-source ebook management library app.

While not containing any new features per se, the Calibre 2.83 update is here to improve various of the built-in functionalities, such as the PDF Output, which now defaults to generating PDF documents that have a page size of letter instead of fetching the size of the page from the output profile.

"This avoids user confusion/bug reports about PDF Output having "too large fonts". There is a new option "Use profile size" to have the conversion use the output profile page size instead," explains the developer in the release announcement for Calibre 2.83.

Separate, PDF and DOCX page margin settings were implemented as well to override the standard ones, which appear to be useful due to the fact that the page margin settings for page oriented formats are normally different than those that are available for reflowable formats like EPUB.

Also improved in Calibre 2.83 are the Table of Contents (ToC) tool, which gains an Undo button, the Metadata jacket feature, which now displays the custom rating colums using stars and allows access to raw series number and name of a series when customizing the jacket template.

Bug fixes, updated and new news sources

As expected with any new maintenance update of Calibre, various bugs reported by users have been resolved, so we recommend that you check out the full changelog attached below if you're curious to know what exactly was fixed in Calibre 2.83, which comes with support for the Jacobin magazine news source.

The Go Comics, Die Zeit (subscription), New York Magazine, and Pagina12 news sources were updated, and a check was implemented in the "Check Book" feature for empty identifier elements. You can download Calibre 2.83 for GNU/Linux, macOS, and Microsoft Windows operating systems right now from our website.
