Windows 10 Creators Update is now delivered via Windows Update too

The Windows 10 Creators Update is now available via Windows Update, but since the rollout takes place in stages, not everyone can perform the upgrade just yet. As a result, the Creators Update, listed as version 1703, doesn’t show up in Windows Update, though there’s something you need to know.

Even though your computer might be ready to install the Creators Update and version 1703 is offered via Windows Update, there’s one prerequisite that needs to be there before the whole thing starts. It’s the small KB4013214 update and it can also be downloaded from Windows Update, so make sure you don’t skip or block this one if you want to upgrade to the Creators Update.

On the other hand, if for some reason you decided to stick with Windows 10 Anniversary Update and don’t want to upgrade, blocking KB4013214 is a good place to start.

Cumulative updates also needed

What’s also worth knowing is that in its turn, KB4013214 has its own prerequisite. Before installing KB4013214 you must download and install Windows 10 cumulative update KB4015583 or a newer release if it’s available, Microsoft says.

“As part of Microsoft's continuing commitment to your privacy with Windows 10, Windows Update KB4013214 prepares your device for the Windows 10 Creators Update by installing the Upgrade and Privacy Experience (UPX). This update is required before Windows Update will download and install the Windows 10 Creators Update,” Microsoft explains.

The Creators Update can also be downloaded and installed manually with the Windows 10 Update Assistant, so even if the new version does not show up in Windows Update just yet, you can still upgrade your computer with a few more steps.

Microsoft says it could take up to several months to make the Creators Update available for everyone on Windows Update, given that it needs to fix bugs and app compatibility issues, so you better consider upgrading manually if you don’t want to wait that long.
