The new build is again shipped to PCs exclusively

Microsoft has just rolled out a new Windows 10 Creators Update preview build for insiders in the Fast ring as the company is advancing at a very past pace towards compiling the RTM expected anytime soon.

Redmond is yet to confirm the release date of the Creators Update, but it’s believed the target is April 11 for the beginning of the rollout, while the RTM build should be compiled these days before being pushed to insiders next week.

Windows 10 build 15060 is the most recent release for the Fast ring of the Windows Insider program and, just as expected, there are no new features, but only bug fixes and performance improvements that are supposed to refine the operating system before the public launch next month.

Plenty of fixes, fewer known issues

One of the most important fixes concerns the way the Settings icon is displayed in the taskbar, an issue that we also experienced on several testing systems here at Softpedia. Dona Sarkar, head of the Windows Insider program, says everything should work correctly in this new build.

“We fixed an issue resulting in the Settings icon appearing plating in the taskbar. This issue also resulted in another issue now fixed, where if Settings had been pinned to Start, the tile would become greyed out after the first time it was clicked. Thank you all for your feedback on this,” she explains.

Of course, there are also some known issues in this build, but the number of bugs that are shipped with Windows 10 builds is getting smaller with every release, and this is a sign that the Windows 10 Creators Update is taking shape quite nicely.

For what it’s worth, this could be one of the last builds in anticipation of the Windows 10 Creators Update launch, with Microsoft then expected to make the switch to Redstone 3 builds. The next big update for Windows 10 is projected to launch in the fall, with insiders to get preview builds shortly after the release of the Creators Update.

Spoiler

Other changes, improvements, and fixes for PC

  • We fixed an issue resulting in the Settings icon appearing plating in the taskbar. This issue also resulted in another issue now fixed, where if Settings had been pinned to Start, the tile would become greyed out after the first time it was clicked. Thank you all for your feedback on this.
  • We fixed an issue resulting in 3rd party IMEs not showing up in Settings after being installed.
  • We fixed an issue in Microsoft Edge where quickly typing and deleting characters into a website’s search box while using the MS Pinyin IME might result in the IME becoming stuck and the website showing “Not responding”.
  • Surface Pro 3 and Surface 3 devices should no longer fail to update to new builds if a SD memory card is inserted if you have the latest Surface drivers and firmware installed.
  • We fixed an issue where taskhost.exe might crash after pressing Tab while quickly typing in UWP app sign in fields, resulting in not being able to type for a few seconds.
  • We fixed an issue for Insiders where, after a crash, Microsoft Edge might fail to launch again for a few minutes because previous instances were still suspended in the background.
  • We fixed the issues occurring when exploring pages using the F12 Developer Tools in Microsoft Edge with cross-origin iframes (e.g. the DOM explorer shows only the iframe DOM, the Console frame selector doesn’t list the iframes, etc.).

Known issues for PC

  • You will be unable to download new (additional) language packs on this build. Currently installed language packs will not be impacted.
  • If your PC fails to install this build on reboot with the error 8024a112, reboot manually again. If your PC appears to hang during the reboot, power your PC off and back on and the install will proceed.
  • Some Insiders have reported seeing this error “Some updates were cancelled. We’ll keep trying in case new updates become available” in Windows Update. If you encounter it, please try deleting the following registry key:
  • See this forum post for more details.
  • Some apps and games may crash due to a misconfiguration of advertising ID that happened in a prior build. Specifically, this issue affects new user accounts that were created on Build 15031. The misconfiguration can continue to persist after upgrading to later builds. The ACL on the registry key incorrectly denies access to the user and you can delete the following registry key to get out of this state:HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\AdvertisingInfo
  • There is a bug where if you need to restart your PC due to a pending update like with the latest Surface firmware updates, the restart reminder dialog doesn’t pop up. You should check Settings > Update & security > Windows Update to see if a restart is required.
  • [GAMING] Certain hardware configurations may cause the broadcast live review window in the Game bar to flash Green while you are Broadcasting. This does not affect the quality of your broadcast and is only visible to the Broadcaster.

Microsoft released Windows 10 for PCs build 15061 to the Fast ring, which is the third Insider Preview in the ring so far this week. The first was 15058, which showed up on Tuesday, and then we got 15060 just yesterday. All three of these builds are PC-only, so we're still waiting on something for Windows 10 Mobile, for which Dona Sarkar says the team is "tracking down a bug".

The company usually introduces new builds to the Fast ring on a weekly basis; however, it's crunch time. Rumor has it that the Creators Update is going to roll out to the public in less than a month, and Microsoft is already finalizing it this week, which means that Insiders could see an RTM as early as next week.

While Microsoft has said that PCs will get the Creators Update first and other platforms will get it later, that still doesn't explain the lack of a Windows 10 Mobile build. After all, while there will likely be some cumulative updates between when PCs get it and when phones do, the RTM build should ship to Insiders at the same time.

The Creators Update will include a number of new features, which focus on gaming, Edge, Windows Ink, Cortana, and more. Of course, there is also a number of features that will be removed or deprecated, as is the case with every feature update, which are anything from Flash autorun in Edge to Apps Corner.
