Windows 10 build 15055 is version 1703

Microsoft rolled out Windows 10 build 15055 a few minutes ago, and in addition to all the bug fixes and improvements that are part of the release, there is also a change that confirms some of the rumors we’ve heard recently regarding the RTM build.

The new build 15055 is the first one that’s updated to version 1703, which is expected to be none other than the RTM, though the build number is likely to be different.

Version 1703 is a direct reference to the RTM build, as it marks the compiling date: the first two digits represent the year, while the other two stand for the month – in this case, it’s March 2017. In other words, Microsoft kind of confirms that the Windows 10 Creators Update is projected to be finalized as soon as this month, and the update to version 1703 is living proof that we’re almost there.

New builds next week

What’s important to know, however, is that build 15055 is not RTM, though it’s very clear that it’s not very far from it either.

Microsoft is projected to compile the RTM build in the coming weeks, with some sources previously indicating that the target was mid-March.

We’re hearing insiders could get the final RTM build in the week of March 20, in anticipation to the public launch that should take place in April.

A recent report indicated that Microsoft wants to begin the Windows 10 Creators Update rollout on April 11, though that’s not yet confirmed and still raises some doubts given the fact that Microsoft is releasing next month’s Patch Tuesday security updates during the same day.

Although some things are yet to be confirmed, it’s very clear that Windows 10 Creators Update is taking shape quite nicely and we’re getting super-close to the public launch. New builds for Windows insiders are expected next week, once again with the full focus on fixing bugs and improving performance.

Woody's take on why it isn't the RTM...

No, Win10 beta build 15055 is not the “RTM” of Creators Update

Richard Hay over at Penton’s Supersite has three good reasons why Friday’s beta build 15055 is likely not the final release of Win10 version 1703 Creators Update:

  • There’s a watermark on the desktop
  • It has an expiration date
  • The official announcement says there’s a bug with the Store and “This issue will be fixed in the next build.”

The discussion in the Lounge also notes that:

  • Surface Pro 3 won’t install 15055 if there’s a microSD card in it

Of course, Microsoft can do anything imaginable (and some things unimaginable) to create the “final” RTM Creators Update. Don’t forget that last time around, MS pushed a cumulative update (KB3176929) just before it released 1607 to the masses. The folks in the Insider program were working on build 143939, thinking we had it made, when we suddenly discovered that the “real” final build was 14393.10.

Will history repeat itself? Guess we’ll have to wait a few weeks to find out.

Which reminds me… many observers now say that Win10 Creators Update will roll out on April 11. While that’s entirely possible, releasing on April 11 would be like tossing gasoline on a bonfire. April 11 is the first real Patch Tuesday in two (arguably three or four) months; there will undoubtedly be patches for Win 7, 8.1, and Win10 version 1507, 1511, and 1607 on that date. Hard to imagine MS would release 1703 simultaneously.

For reference, none of the Win10 versions have gone out on Patch Tuesdays – 1507 was on July 29, 2015; 1511 was on Thursday, Nov. 12, 2015; 1607 was on Aug. 2, 2016.

Surely somebody’s figured that part out.

Yay, update number 2 ......

So does this Mean that it's now Windows 10 b2? out for Public release, or is this a complete Windows 10 (final) bug-free edition? First edition of the public not being beta testers?

C'mon enough with this, it's no where near beta in form or function. Seriously, just stop.
