Valve data shows Windows 10 is losing ground on Steam

While overall adoption of Windows 10 slowed down worldwide, Microsoft’s latest operating system is losing ground on Steam, where users appear to be moving back to Windows 7.

Valve data for the month of February shows that Windows 10 declined on Steam, while Windows 7 was the only version that actually increased its share last month.

Specifically, Windows 10 64-bit dropped 0.78 percent to 47.71 percent, while the 32-bit version declined 0.12 percent to 1.06 percent. All the other Windows operating system lost users the past month, with one exception: Windows 7.

According to Valve, the 64-bit version of Windows 7 posted a substantial increase of 1.67 percent in February to return to 31.41 percent share, while the 32-bit version also experienced a growth, this time smaller of just 0.03 percent, to achieve 5.40 percent.

Downgrading to Windows 7

As for the reasons that might have pushed users from Windows 10 back to Windows 7, there’s no information in this regard, but there’s a chance that more gamers decided to stick with the 2009 operating system after previously performing the upgrade, thus making sure they can return at any given moment without paying for a license.

Microsoft’s free Windows 10 upgrade offer that was available in the first 12 months after the launch of OS allowed Windows 7 and 8.1 users to install the new operating system without paying.

If the upgrade to Windows 10 was performed in these first 12 months, they could always downgrade and return to this OS version at any given moment without paying, as the license was already activated and associated with their computer.

On Steam, Windows is now powering 95.96 percent, so Microsoft barely sees any competition from Mac and Linux. Apple’s platform dropped 0.14 percent the last month to 3.17 percent, while Linux declined 0.05 percent to settle at 0.75 percent.

All the other Windows versions lost share points in February, and Windows 8 32-bit is currently the last one in the chart with just 0.08 percent.

Since we have a renowned researcher on board, we all want to know:
What would it take Valve / Steam to fake the result?!...

If 1 new or existing person changes or already had it installed when he or she logged on

next week ,the'll say Linux is taking over the gaming world when another person fires up a steambox

Mate, you really should learn to count. Windows 7 x64's 1.67% growth is a hell of a lot more than 1 user.

Even assuming what you say is true, that 1.67% is 1 device, then Windows 10 x64's 47.71% is about 28.5 users. Is that all the Windows 10 x64 Steam users?

Face it... gamers (and others) are finally starting to give up on Borg OS Windows 10 and are upgrading it to something that is stable, mature, and gives the user control.

You really think so, I don't.  You can build all the high end Generation 6 i7 computers you want with Windows 7 right now and they will work forever.  I have built six (costing about $4500 each) in the last month or so and after setting them up, putting them in the closet.  These have the fastest 6th Gen i7 processors, best 1080 graphics cards, 128GB memory, 2TB SSD, 6TB HDD, installed on the best ASUS motherboards, both 1151 and 2011.  Even relatives and friends who are buying 6th Gen commercial gaming systems are installing Windows 7 on them which is why Steam may be seeing a reduction in the number of Windows 10 systems and an increase in Windows 7.  A lot of these people have no choice when they buy their computers and only ask about putting Windows 7 on them when they become dissatisfied with Windows 10.  My nephew has a CyberPower gaming system that, after being frustrated with it for 6 months with Windows 10, had me install Windows 7 on it and now he is as happy as a pig in mud (though that expression isn't true, pigs only roll in it to protect against flies and other insects :D).

you obviously didn't get the point .

the increase in windows 7 users of one person was just an example

the increase was so minimal that it wasn't even worth broadcasting

if it was like 20 percent ,the I would say yea

but 1 percent ,come on man, like I said slow day at the office

and like @beamslider said all the new cpus and chips won't be supporting 7 sonn anyway

I have to agree posting about one point six seven percent and trying to call it a substantial increase really?  The answer to that is obviously bullshit and funny thanks for a good laugh.  It also looks like someone is trying to up there post count by posting not that important news.  Also one point six seven percent doesnt make trouble for windows ten if it was twenty percent like bigcidten said then yes thats potential trouble one point six percent microsoft executives are laughing at this Im sure.

Except all the blind W10-fanboys who are complaining this is actually news if Win7 is up more than 0.2% (which I consider a statistical error and/or a simple temporary fluctuation in the user-base). And this +1.6% tells exxactly this - even hardcore fans are getting fed up, and are switching back to an OS that is stable, mature and let's them control it fully.

"Significant" is subjective. One man's "significant" is another man's "insignificant". :)

Given that you can't buy a new Windows device with anything except Windows 10, that means a shedload of shiny new Windows 10 buyers went to the extra trouble of replacing it with something else. That says a lot about what users think of Windows 10.

OK, let's look at the Windows 7 1.70% (W7 x64 + W7 x32) increase...

That means that total Windows 7 usage jumped from 35.11% to the current 36.81%. The Windows 7 userbase count jumped by 4.84%1.

I bet that if the Windows 10 userbase had jumped by nearly 5%, Microsoft execs would be doing orgasmic cartwheels in air laden with streamers and confetti.

1 1.7% of 35.11% = 4.84% of 100%

Just as one (wo)man's post (this one) just to increase the post count by one (1) may not count (insignificant) but it counts in one man's total count (significant).  ;)  Cheers!

You can try to justify why you think that that increase is significant all you want wont make it significant.  If you polish a turd it remains a turd.

As you see above, it is merely a matter of optics. :tease:
