Statistics show that Windows 7 is back to growth

New market share data provided by NetMarketShare show that Windows 7 returned to growth in February, while Windows 10, which is Microsoft’s most recent desktop operating system, started losing ground.

Specifically, Windows 7 is the number one operating system on the desktop with a share of 48.41 percent, while Windows 10 is currently the runner-up with 25.19 percent. Windows XP is third with 8.45 percent, followed by Windows 8.1 with 6.87 percent.

As far as Windows 7 and Windows 10 are concerned, it looks like the older version is improving its market share once again, while the newer sibling is actually going down, not in a significant way, but still declining in a time when everyone expected it to grow.

Windows 7 improved from 47.20 percent to 48.41 percent, so it gained more than 1 percent market share in just a single month.

At the opposite pole there’s Windows 10, which dropped from 25.30 percent to 25.19 percent. As you can see, this isn’t a substantial drop, but it’s still a drop, despite Microsoft’s rather aggressive push for Windows 10 and the free upgrade offer that was supposed to bring everyone on the new OS.

Windows XP finally losing users

On the Windows XP front, there’s some pretty exciting news: the nearly 16-year-old operating system is losing ground as well, so it declined from 9.17 percent to 8.45 percent last month, which makes perfect sense given the fact that it no longer receives updates and security updates since April 2014.

Windows 10 is now Microsoft’s main focus, so it’s a little surprising to see it going down now when most enterprises are supposed to complete the piloting phase and start the deployment of the operating system in their networks.

Microsoft, however, is well aware that adoption is slowing down, so the company admitted that it might miss its goal of bringing Windows 10 on 1 billion devices by the end of FY2017, especially because of upgrades that take place at a slower pace than initially predicted.

They tricked and forced users to "update" to 10. I suppose the numbers would be even less if they did not. Maybe Microsoft should have just listened to their users and not made all those insane decisions (based on wild assumptions) regarding the new Operating System. I still remember them ignoring the insider program users reviews and requests, doing the exact opposite of them and then claim they are doing what users want.

Woody's take...

No significant change in February usage numbers for Windows 10, Edge

Win10 nudged up or down, depending on whom you trust, and Edge showed signs of incipient somnambulance

February was not kind to either Windows 10 or Edge. Windows 7 isn’t showing any signs of giving up its pole position, and Chrome continues to nudge  upward.

If you believe the numbers from NetMarketshare, Win10 usage went down from 25.30 in January to 25.19% in February, and Edge increased imperceptibly from 5.48 to 5.55% of usage worldwide. The combination of Internet Explorer + Edge went down from 25.19% to 24.72%.

If you believe StatCounter, Win10 usage stepped up nearly a percentage point from 32.84% in January to 33.8% in February, while Edge increased from 3.58 to 3.68% usage share. At that rate, Win10 will take over Win7 usage in less than a century, and Edge may show a perceptible pulse by the end of the year.

Windows 7 continues to hold its own. StatCounter says it went down a bit from 47.46% to 47.17%. NetMarketshare saw a big bump, from 47.20 to 48.41%.

Chrome is showing small gains on both scorecards. NetMarketshare says its market share increased from 57.94% to 58.53% over the period, while StatCounter pegs the increase from 62.09 to 62.95%.

Yep... to sack all their experienced inhouse testers, then put testing in the hands of the Windows Insiders may have been an idea worth trying. But as you say... it wasn't exactly a surprise to most (except Microsoft) that ignoring the Insiders' feedback and bug reports would not end well. QA went down the toilet and the users became the update-beta-testers and suffered.

With the Creators (who dreams up these silly names?) Update there are signs that Microsoft is starting to wake from their blinkered obsessions of (1) keeping Windows 10 up to date at all costs and (2) developing new features is more important than fixing the bugs in existing features. Even they can't be deaf and blind to the many ("a small number" in MS-speak) users whose W10 systems are left broken after forced updates, and features which only half work properly.

Fingers crossed that the Microsoft fools are finally realising that Windows 10 will remain a Windows-8-like disaster unless they accept that they've badly stuffed up and start putting users first.

Well, I'm not an old man at the end of life and not even a young man disillusioned with it...

And that's why I insist on what I've said before...

If you have been following insider editions and the bug crush event Microsoft had they have fixed over 200,000 bugs in the latest build that was just released YESTERDAY and I would say they are listening to their users to an extent you can never please everyone just wont work and not to mention an average user that has no programming knowledge asking for crazy things to be put into windows its just not realistic now hopefully they follow through with what they claimed about a month ago with creators edition being released they are taking away a bunch of telemetry and added a lot of features like disabling or stalling updates for 35 days you can turn it on and off as much as you like making it much easier to disable updates if you so wish, but with how active hackers are these days its probably best to keep an eye on your your entire network not just your computer but printers, routers, modems cell phones you name it they are all linked and vulnerable and phones are more likely to be outdated and vulnerable then windows 10, that have their own issues I currently have an international galaxy s7 and I have had to reset to factory 3 fucking times now due to some fucking bug or hack my windows 10 3 machines all running windows defender and all updated on the day NO ISSUES so riddle me that. Then I have Asus routers and Asus cable modem all of which have been hacked repeatedly yet the fix Asus just came out with broke it even more, i have to keep resetting them to factory and making up more difficult admin user names and passwords from bruteforce. I don't run insider versions until they are within a month or less of stable release and i test the fucking shit out of it and give feedback and have had replies to my latest feedback's maybe you just just don't give feedback or ask crazy bullshit or you are just part of the hatefulness this world has like the anti trump and anti pro life and the anti this and anti that since the new CEO of Microsoft they have gotten a hell of a lot better then when the last ran it window 8 remember not 8.1 and then you have bill gates and his brilliant millennium edition and vista and windows 7 was shit till sp1 and several updates later but still has issues running modern hardware with 3rd party drivers crashing every so often or just running a slug on some boots or reboots. hmm.jpg

Well, we need to clarify the concept of "listening":

  • When the insiders were designed, it was only to give the user false impression that their efforts "would contribute to making Windows better"... Since the lie needs to be fed, they came with "Creators Update"... More of the same. Microsoft is listening to nobody but itself!!! It's having to swallow the frog it created and fed!!! It's a matter of survival!!! Either it gives way, I say "listen to the creators", or users will migrate back to their old operating systems!!!
  • When you have friends or even an egalitarian partner, you listen to the suggestions, expose your ideas and both come to consensus. That's listening!!!

I will give you that on the listening portion but its different strokes for different folks like I never liked windows 7 start menu yet a lot of people want that exact start menu back. That's not very progressive thinking, thank god they didn't do what ubuntu did, that was a horrid start menu and they are now stepping away from it. I like Mints start menu but only to an extent, I want to start seeing 3D or vr type desktops and start menus as this tech is progressing at a very rapid rate. but we shall see,

Holding off upgrading over a fucking start menu.. LOL.

Is there anyone here that stupid?

Not so stupid when you add in all the other distasteful things with Windows 10.

Are you looking forward to when Microsoft has their next Windows-8 moment and radically and unpopularly changes the Windows 10 UX? Then, your choices are only (1) suck it up and learn to live with it or hate it, (2) turn off updates forever, or (3) upgrade to Windows 7 or 8.1.

One strength of Windows versions before 10 is that the UX and feature-set were set in concrete and any changes are minor and not likely to ruffle any feathers. That's called stability. And, if you didn't like the new OS you could just remain on your current one. Not an option with "The OS that will never be finished".
