Return of the bogus 3.99 TB Windows Update Cleanup files

The unacknowledged Win10 cumulative update KB 3201845 brings with it another annoying bug. ch100 reports:

4tb-bug

Following the installation of KB3201845 on 3 machines, 2 with Windows 10 1607 and the other with Windows Server 2016 and running Disk Cleanup, this comes up consistently on all 3 machines.

It cannot be right as I don’t even have that amount of storage.

After running Disk Cleanup with that option selected, it does not come back at next run.

I am wondering if it breaks anything though.

It ends up that we saw the same bug in October with both the Win10 1607 patch, KB 3194798, and the Win10 1511 patch, KB 3192441.

When people talk about “bug regression,” this is exactly what they’re describing – a bug that was wiped out previously, but returns to haunt another cumulative update.

“Deleting” the non-existent files seems to do the trick. I haven’t heard of any complications.

I read about this yesterday at windows ten Forums  just like  every update many run Run Disk Cleanup ...Disk Cleaner is crap  if they going leave so much behind on updates  they should at lest improve it to run fast. When you clean up left over in Linux Mint you can just

Clear the updates cache

2. Launch Synaptic Package Manager.

Panel of Synaptic: Settings - Preferences - Files

Put the dot at: Delete downloaded packages after installation

Press the button: Delete cached package files

And it cleans them as you update or you can just press the button and its really fast.

In manjaro

Cleaning the cache

  • Leaves packages in your cache only for those packages which are currently installed on your system. Attention: This eliminates the possibility to Using Downgrade.

pacman -Sc
  • Clean cache completely and remove all packages. Attention: This eliminates the possibility to Using Downgrade.

pacman -Scc
  • A safer way to remove old package cache files is to remove all packages except for the latest three package versions:

paccache -rvk3

All is very fast but on windows were stuck in the stone ages using Disk cleanup from windows 95! Ive always hated Disk cleanup

And Woody is smoking something that what he gets for copy and pasting it was not  3.99 TB iis not even possible unless you had a  5 TB Hard drive  its 3.99 GB  not TB lol. if you look at drive C after updating  lol. I use windows 10 on a 150 GB HD  and it stays around 20 gbs full lol

Firstly, it was posted by ch100, not Woody.

Secondly. the 3.99 TB is in the screen grab, a bit hard to falsify. And others have posted screenies showing 3.99TB.

Thirdly, ch100 says " It cannot be right as I don’t even have that amount of storage. ", so it's acknowledged that the amount shown can exceed the available storage.

Finally, it's Microsoft, and Windows 10, so any cockup's possible. More than once too.

Just yet another example how Microsoft has completely lost the plot with testing. Bugs aren't exterminated, they're just temporarily suspended and ready to be brought back to life at any time.

In my case @Pete 12 when I was using cleanmgr.exe to try to do that take a lot of time, hours, and at the end the 3.99 TB was still there. With that command did the job and removed the 3.99 TB thing. :)

It good to run this every so often  anyways once i ran i got back 10  gb  of space and i had this install installed since the end of July  so every time you update  Windows 10 is leaving stuff behind  you really dont need in the WinSxS Folder it also works for windows 8.1 too .

Who ever wrote i seen it  a day before at Windows 10 forums.   I thought you switched to using Windows 8.1 ? If you dont use Windows 10 its not you're problem . Let the people who use windows 10 worry about it . I dont like Woody because he gets paid too hate on Windows and  he done the same thing before Windows 10 came out with Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 .

What setting are you talking about ? you can  run the command  standstone  gave that will make windows 10 like new again  as clean as the day you installed it.

What reset base does is remove all the temporary files in the WinSxS folder  when I checked it with  Treesize  it showed  i was loseing disk space because of this  and reset base fixed it its great as long as you dont do it with a buggy update installed if the update you have installed works OK  for you  and you dont need to restore it helps and it dont effect future updates it only wipes out old ones . If you want too make a clean image with all updates installed you can clean base and it will really be clean. I got back 10 gb  and all updates are  still installed. On this machine

I  have Windows 10 installed on a 150 gb hd  on this PC  so 10 gb is a lot too me I have Linux  on another 1 TB hd  2 different OS split partitions I hardly even clean it because i have plenty of space on that one I put everything i want too keep on 2 other hds  i have 6tb  of extra storage  with no OS on them .

I am on 8.1 now, but used only Windows 10 daily for many hours for 3-4 months so that gives me the right to comment on it. :)

Bull! If there's anything Woody can't be accused of, it's bias. He's fair and calls it as he sees it, AND backs it up with saying why he's called it that way. Just because he says more negative than positive about Windows 10 doesn't make him biased. It just means there's more wrong than right with Windows10 and Microsoft.

He uses Windows 10 on a daily basis, and has said numerous times that he's happy with it for that purpose.

And he's authored several books on various Windows OS's, including 8/8.1 and 10.

Not bad for a "Windows hater", eh? :)

My hero's are not people I dont  know be it be Bill Gates ,  Woody Leonhard, or who ever I dont have favorites I been using windows for 15 years and I never knew who  Woody Leonhard was tell like 2015 so why would I need him now? After I done research  on him and figured out who was  a windows hater  i have no respect  for his agenda.

Slowly but surely, Microsoft is taking baby steps to appease longtime Windows desktop users who absolutely hate the changes Microsoft made with Windows 8. Earlier this month, we wrote about the experiences of U.K.-based tech writer James Woodcock, who did a nice job of outlining all the new features in the soon-to-be-released Windows 8.1 Update 1 that should appeal to spurned mouse-and-keyboard users. And now InfoWorld’s Woody Leonhard, who has been a diehard Windows 8 hater from the start, has penned his own review to Update 1 that similarly finds some things to like for desktop users.

http://bgr.com/2014/03/19/windows-8-1-update-1-new-features/

People dissed Windows 7 because they didn't want to leave XP , People dissed Windows 8 because it didn't have a start  menu that you could  install yourself. fact is if Microsoft ever got tried of all you haters and stop making windows people like Woody would have no job , he depends on Microsoft to make mistakes and nothing is prefect we dont live in a perfect world  and no OS is prefect . And some of you buy into it hook , line and sinker . But I see right trough him.. he uses Windows 10 because he gets paid  to report things  he finds wrong in it. It's not because he likes it! If i got paid to use something even if I hated it I would use it . you would be a fool if you didn't .

They got back the start menu  and got rid of all the things they hated in Windows 8  with Windows 10 but people are never happy  because every OS ever made brings on a new set of problems and all you can do is deal with them and fix them as they come along or use something else .The hate BS i dont need it cant help me fix my problems.

He's no different than Ed Bott who gets paid to make like windows is better than it is . Woody  just paid  to defend the haters side of the story both over exaggerate there stories.  . Windows is not great and its not bad ether . It's nothing but software code

Sigh... that's right mate... anyone who says one negative thing about something you like must be a hater.

By your own logic that makes you a fanboy then... :P

You should know by now that I find that term offensive. Actually I do hate something, and that's what Microsoft have done to Windows 10, and the shoddy way they now treat and have treated users ever since they rolled out their free "upgrade". It could truly have been the great OS they claim, but Microsoft have f*cked it so badly, and in so many different ways.

Oh sure, I believe that, millions wouldn't...

He gets paid to report, whether negatively or positively.

Maybe it just appears that way because there are more bad things about Windows 10 than good things?

I doubt you're that cheap (or tolerant). :)

He provides a valuable service to those who just want to use their PC, and now need to protect it from Microsoft and its flaky forced updates.

And, again, he backs up all that he says with why he says it. You can agree or disagree with what he says, but attacking his person rather than his reasoning just demonstrates your own bias and inability to argue logically.

This is off-topic, but you have the right of reply. This is my last on this.

Maybe he provides valuable info to you but  you dont speak for the other 1.5 billion windows users too most normal people they could care less and  could retire tomorrow and I  would never miss him , I learned  most of what I know from reading  and other people on forums i have the gift of being able to understand  things real easy if i have a problem I just do a web search and fix it  .I dont fret  over software code . I proved to myself  in 2015 no matter what Microsoft does i could live with out windows by just using Linux . I use Windows just because I can  is all. Its you people who need Microsoft who obsess over Windows . I just go watch a movie or download some cool software and call it a day . I dont want to go grey haired obsessing over something I can't change.
