Microsoft: Windows 7 Update KB2952664 Not Related to Windows 10 Upgrades

It has nothing to do with Get Windows 10 app, the firm guarantees, as it only improves the update experience

Microsoft took everyone by surprise a couple of days ago when it re-released Windows 7 update KB2952664, which is one of the patches that was listed as a pre-requisite for the “Get Windows 10” app supposed to ensure a smooth transition to Windows 10.

The KB page explained that the update was supposed to improve the upgrade experience on Windows 7, but with the free upgrade campaign now over, many users were afraid that Microsoft might come down to a new tactic to put the new operating system on their PCs.

This is not at all the case, and a Microsoft spokesperson told us in a statement that this new update has nothing to do with the “Get Windows 10” app that was released in mid-2015 to provide easy upgrades to Windows 10. KB2952664 is just a regular patch to improve Windows Update, the company says.

Not bringing “Get Windows 10” app back

“There is no Get Windows 10 or upgrade functionality contained in this update. This KB article is related to the Windows Update and the appraiser systems that enables us to continue to deliver servicing updates to Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, as well as ensure device and application compatibility,” the spokesperson told us.

According to Woody Leonhard from AskWoody, this is a patch that brings changes to the Windows Upgrade Analytics Service, which is, in turn, a telemetry service that is used for improving upgrades to newer OS versions. Microsoft explains:

“The Windows Upgrade Analytics Service uses telemetry data to provide powerful upgrade readiness insights and recommendations about the computers, applications and drivers in your organization. This new service guides you through upgrade projects using a workflow based on Microsoft recommended practices. Up-to-date inventory data allows you to balance cost and risk in your upgrade projects.”

For the moment, Microsoft guarantees that this update won’t force the upgrade to Windows 10 on your computer and there are small chances for this to happen given that the free upgrade campaign is already over. But if you do want to use the Windows Upgrade Analytics Service, this is a mandatory update.

... it will force it!!! Especially because the only thing guaranteed by Microsoft is: it doesn't fulfill its own promises!!!

it will not, this is only to help analyze monthly update process so it will help them to detect the issues that could happen with updates, and with that info they can fix the troubles more easily for the next updates.

I agree about being extremely critical about believing Microsoft, Google, Apple, Intel etc... mean against any coroporation trying to sell itself as benefactor of humanity. But we shouldn't go to extreme of unfunded conspirational theories.

I have KB2952664 installed on my Windows 7, 64 bits since August 6, so, from a date after "free" update term was over, and NEVER got any invitation or notification to update and of course, never Microsoft tried to force me to update to Windows 10.

Might even say that earlier I had some issues getting updates for Windows and accesories like .Net Framework, Office 2016 etc but currently updates are normal.

I may even say that since update time expired, I haven't heared more complaints about forced Windows 10 updates. Of course if you have any CONCRETE information, you are welcomed to share it

The only question I would make is "Why Microsoft released a patch which is supposed to be a re-edited version of original KB2952664, using the same filename". My obvious anwser is "Microsoft is getting sloppy"

The Precautionary Principle...

Quote

... is the guarantee against potential risks, according to the current state of knowledge, can not yet be identified. This principle states that the absence of formal scientific certainty, the existence of a risk of serious or irreversible damage requires the implementation of measures that can predict this damage.

And as I said earlier...
