“Edge performance is still horrid,” feedback reads

Feedback submitted by Windows 10 users in Feedback app

Microsoft is betting big on Edge browser in the fight against rivals Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and the firm is continuously investing in the app to make sure that more users give it a try.

Living proof is the recently-released support for extensions, as Microsoft finally implemented it in consumer versions of Windows 10 with the release of the Anniversary Update.

And although Edge browser has evolved a lot lately, this still isn’t enough to compete against Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox and the ones saying this are Windows 10 users who tried out the browser and decided to submit feedback to Microsoft.

Still crashing every once in a while

A thread in the Microsoft Feedback app discussing Edge performance contains complaints from users who were disappointed with how the browser was working despite the numerous improvements implemented by Microsoft lately.

“Edge performance is still horrid. The browser constantly stops responding and I have to wait a minute or two before it becomes usable again. This happens on many different sites,” the user who first submitted the feedback wrote.

“I gave up using edge as my default, it's stupidly lacking in basic functionality, it annoyingly keeps hanging every now and then as you stated, and it's years behind the competition to be worth time. Basic functionality it still lacks till today: can't restore previous session after exiting the browser and attempting to copy text from the URL bar 'causes it to freeze,” another one added.

And all these complaints lead to poor market share, with Edge currently being used on approximately 5 percent of computers worldwide, according to various market research firms.

Of course, Edge adoption is also substantially impacted by its exclusive availability on Windows 10 and Microsoft isn’t willing to change that, as the company has no plan to launch the browser on any other operating system, be it an older version of Windows, Linux, or MacOS.

I guess that Edge is used by 5% of computers mainly because many noob Windows 10 computer users don't even have the idea that they can install any other browser, like Firefox or Google Chrome and less even that Windows 10 still has available Internet Explorer, well hidden in the insides of the system.

Should they know better, I guess this 5% might shrink significatively

I used to use Internet explorer to download other browsers like Firefox or Google Chrome. but for Edge it's very different. for example, I decide to download Google Chrome soon after Installing Windows 10 using Edge and then I see all my bookmarks are there and synced and then pages load as fast as Chrome and it's cool with dark theme, I can use Adblock extension and Evernote extension and many more. yeah it can be a competitor for Chrome.

agreed Edge is now my main browser I use chrome for backup but edge still needs to be oiled a bit better still a bit sticky in some areas but other then those very few issues its pretty rock solid and fast I just don't like having to be logged into a Microsoft account to install the extensions that is a bummer.

I'm using Windows XP and Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bits with both Firefox and Google Crome. My experience with people I know, using Windows 10, is that they use Firefox or Google Chrome and not Edge, but all of them have some previous experience with Windows. And most of the people I know use Windows 7 or Windows XP, except two who have MAC.

For a short time I tried Windows 10, just had a quick look to Edge; at first sight, didn't like it and switched to Firefox and shortly after, removed Windows 10. So, I'm sorry, I have no experience with extensions for Edge.
