Microsoft is working on a fix for freezing issues with Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Some users who have installed Windows 10 Anniversary Update on SSDs are experiencing problems with their computers freezing.

Microsoft does not yet have a fix available, but it is aware of the issues and is working to get a patch pushed out to those who have been affected. While there is not a proper fix available at the moment, the company has provided details of a couple of workarounds that should do the job for the time being.

Writing on Windows Answers, a Microsoft administrator said: "Microsoft has received a small number of reports of Windows 10 freezing after installing the Anniversary Update on systems with the operating system stored on a solid-state drive (SSD) and apps and data stored on a separate drive.  This issue does not occur when starting Windows 10 in Safe Mode. If you are experiencing this issue, we will be providing updates to this thread."

A couple of workarounds are also suggested:

Method 1: Using the Recovery Console

  1. Restart your PC. When you get to the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key down while you select Power >Restart.
  2. After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced Options >Go back to the previous build.  If you don’t see this option, try Method 2.

Method 2: Using the Settings app from Safe Mode

  1. Restart your PC. When you get to the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key down while you select Power >Restart.
  2. After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4 or F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode.
  4. Open the Settings app.
  5. Select Update & security and then the Recovery tab.
  6. Under "Go back to an earlier build", click the Get started button and follow the instructions.

1st off like i said early on today, Its not just a SSD problem ,people with multiple  normal HHD are having the same problem .Typical Microsoft to try to blame it off on something besides windows. Funny how this only happens in RS1 and no other O/S.. if it were a problem with drives it would  of been happening for years its a problem with Windows 10 RS1 and not a drives problem. People who have been installing Windows for years and years  with more than one drive just started having problems on RS1 install or upgrade.

The most easy way to test if this is you're problem is to unplug all you're other drives and install Windows 10 RS1 and if it dont happen you will know . I always unhook all my drives when installing windows OS  i dont want them to be scanning  my personal files no way.. then i plug them back in.

Who wants to install Windows and these unproven workarounds  fail  it messes up your master boot record  from people i talked too that had this problem.  When people 1st started reporting this Microsoft told them to clean install witch failed as well and they could not get back to TH2  unless they have a TH2 ISO or backups around. If you don't want to unplug you're other drives and install  you would be better off too roll back to TH2  and wait on a patch. :)

It not a issuse with people who just have one SSD or HHD  i have 2 PCs  that work OK with RS1  ..Its a issue for people who have games or programs installed on  drives besides there main HHD and they try to install it with all there drives plugged in . It messes up there master boot record .

The workaround is to boot in safe mode and put all you're data from you're other drives on you're main HHD . That would be impossible  for me  i have like 3TB  of data on my other drives  . I just unplugged  mine before installed but i only have portables and media on mine .After i installed i plugged them back in it works just fine.

Move your apps and data to the system drive. Boot Windows 10 into Safe Mode and then move your apps and data to the same drive as your operating system, Microsoft recommends. To do so, reboot your PC and then hold down the SHIFT key at the sign-in screen and choose Power and then Restart. After the next reboot, you’ll arrive at a “Choose an option” screen. Select Troubleshoot, Advanced Options, Startup Settings, and then Restart. After that reboot, select F4 (or 4) to reboot yet again in Safe Mode.

Roll back to Windows 10 version 1511. If it’s been less than 10 days since you installed the Anniversary Update—bringing your PC up to Windows 10 version 1607—you can rollback to the previous version, 1511. You do so by navigating to Settings, Update & Security, Recovery and clicking the Get Started button under “Go back to an earlier build.” If you don’t see that option, it’s been more than 10 days and Windows 10 has removed the files necessary to roll back. (You can also roll back using the recovery console or via Safe Mode; check  the Microsoft support post  for more info.)

Not great, I know. But if you are experiencing this issue, be sure to subscribe to the Microsoft support thread and consider offering your help as well.

I have my apps on a different drive but seems Anniversary update doesn't want to appear on my pc yet. Which is good considering all the problems SOME people are having.

I am happy to wait forever if gets improved.

Also if your pc wont boot with a spinning circle of dots, take out anything plugged into a usb port including the mouse dongle for wireless and restart.
