Tab support request in Feedback Hub

One of the most requested features in the latest versions of Windows is tab support in File Explorer, and even though Microsoft has dropped several hints that it might be working on this feature, here we are running Windows 10 version 1607 still without tabs in the file manager.

Now all hopes to see tab support arriving on Windows 10 PCs are on Redstone 2, the next Windows 10 update that’s due in spring 2017 and will include features that weren’t ready for the Anniversary Update.

A post in the Feedback Hub and requiring Microsoft to add tab support for File Explorer has received nearly 250 votes in less than two weeks, and it’s one of the trending suggestions right now.

The team is looking into it

And what’s more important is that Stephanie Monk, one of the Microsoft engineers who are keeping users up to date with information on their feedback, says that this request has already been sent to the developing team to look into it.

“Thank you for your suggestion and feedback. It's great to see so much enthusiasm for tabs in file explorer. While we can't promise to ship every suggestion that gets submitted, we have passed this feedback on to our team to make them aware of what customers are asking for in file explorer. Keep those suggestions and votes coming! We'll keep you updated here if there are any updates in this area,” she says.

Of course, this message doesn’t either confirm or deny that tabs are coming in File Explorer with Redstone 2, but it’s more than we got before, so take this as a “maybe” or as a slight chance to actually see this feature going live sometime in the next updates.

For the moment, however, there are many other third-party clients out there that provide such functionality, but it’s really a shame to install a different solution when File Explorer is working so smoothly.

been wanting this feature since before web browsers had tabs, it's just obvious. Also split window panes with two file explorers in the same window like directory opus would be nice. Also some advanced features such as syncing directories.

How do you drag files between tabs then? Like we drag files between open windows now? How does that work? Why these cunts crying for tabs? What purpose does it serve?

I dunno maybe use a hotkey on the keyboard for tab switching while dragging. And perhaps dragging the tab out of the window makes it into a new window, dragging back in merges the windows, double middle click to switch into split window mode.

Lots of things you could do.

People want it because if you have more than 3 explorer windows open at once it turns into shit especially if you have a few programs open the task switch is a piece of junk to navigate.
