Why users may want a new PC to go with Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Combined with the end of free upgrades to Windows 10, buyers could upgrade PCs to take advantage of features in Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Windows 10 was expected to save the slumping PC market, but it hasn't. PC shipments are still declining, and people haven't bought new hardware just to get Windows 10.

But the Windows 10 Anniversary Update has features that will make new hardware desirable. Moreover, the period to upgrade for free to Windows 10 from older versions has ended, and analysts believe people will buy a new PC instead of shelling out $119.99 to $199.99 for a Windows 10 license.

PC makers hope for nothing more than the death of Windows 7, which some users -- especially businesses -- have been hanging on to. Companies like Lenovo and HP are slowly getting rid of lingering Windows 7 Professional PC models, which will ultimately force holdover users to Windows 10.

Also, PCs with Intel's latest chip, code-named Kaby Lake -- which will start shipping in the third quarter -- will only support Windows 10.

The Windows 10 Anniversary Update became available on Tuesday. Devices that can be used as either laptops and tablets, also called 2-in-1s, are better-equipped to handle touch applications via Windows Ink and voice-based assistants like Cortana, both of which are getting major upgrades.

Microsoft hopes Windows Ink will make the use of digital pens ubiquitous, and it can be used in applications like Sticky Notes, Sketchpad, the Edge browser and Microsoft Office.

HP has worked with Microsoft to design laptops and 2-in-1s for Windows 10, and the Anniversary Update likely gives users a reason to buy laptops with touchscreens, good microphones, cameras and styluses, said Mike Nash, vice president of customer experience and portfolio strategy at HP.

A conventional laptop, meanwhile, will have the Windows 10 Anniversary Update, but won't take full advantage of new features. For example, the Windows Ink feature will create a whole new way of using productivity features in Windows 10, but it can't be used without a device that has a stylus.

Otherwise, a new feature called Xbox Play Anywhere will allow users to buy a game and play it on a PC or an Xbox. Many new games require powerful GPUs, which could also drive hardware upgrades.

PCs will also be more secure with the TPM 2.0 security specifications, designed for Windows 10 and made a compulsory feature on laptops, desktops and mobile devices starting July 28. That could make features like Windows Hello -- a biometric authentication system -- a common feature for logging into PCs. It will support logging in to web sites and apps.

For PC makers, the Windows 10 Anniversary Update is turning out to be a good time to chuck older Windows operating systems in new PCs. Lenovo "will migrate fully to Windows 10 as the operating system on new systems," though it will continue support for Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 systems.

"As the Windows 10 Anniversary Update begins on August 2, 2016, we are fully committed to shipping all Lenovo PCs with Windows 10 across both our consumer and commercial product lines, including the multimode Yoga convertibles, legendary ThinkPads, Y series gaming devices and Miix detachables," a Lenovo spokeswoman said in an e-mail.

Right now, it's possible to buy Windows 7 Professional PCs with a Windows 10 license from major PC makers so organizations can upgrade the OS when ready. Businesses are still buying Windows 7 PCs as they continue to test and fine-tune Windows 10 for use in organizations. Analysts expect upgrades to Windows 10 for these organizations to start later this year and continue into next year.

But time is limited to buy a PC with Windows 7. Sales of PCs with Windows 7 Professional pre-installed may end on Oct. 31, according to a Microsoft timeline. HP is leaning toward sticking to that deadline, after which its PCs will have only Windows 10. Lenovo is also making that transition. Dell offers the largest number of PCs with Windows 7 Professional with the upgrade option to Windows 10 Pro, but has been slowly cutting down the number of such models.

It's actually pretty pathetic what Intel did. Blocking "kaby lake" from installing any other O/S than W10? That's really stupid. What if people don't like using shitty VM's? You have to resort to older hardware? What a joke.

I seriously doubt that this is true, but even if it is, Intel isn't the only manufacturer of microprocessors. And if it's true, I'll try to avoid computers with Intel microprocessors from now on.

Does anyone have any technical details as to how this will be implemented and what is their interpretation of "support" in the context of that statement? I am unsure how this can be done since Kaby Lake is still using an x86 architecture just as its predecessors. I can understand if Windows 7 will not be able to make use of the latest instruction sets which is a valid reason to claim it won't be "supported" but to imply that the CPU will prevent the OS from being installable is strange because I don't see how Microsoft could force Intel to do this.

This would be true if only Microsoft were the only one to make OS but there not Linux Kernel 4.5  and higher supports  Kaby Lake. its not they dont souport other O/S they just dont soport older windowz . :P

But its not just Intel

Both AMD (remember them?) and Qualcomm have stated that their next-generation chips will be Windows 10 exclusives. These are the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 MS8996, and AMD’s Bristol Ridge APU (Accelerated Processing Unit), which is scheduled to be released later this year.

The way its implemented on windowz Lee  is  if  you use these new chips on Windows 7 or 8.1 Microsoft want give you updates, they will work but you will not  get updates. Skylake or Kaby Lake is not a good enough reason to make hardware  upgrade  really

There’s not a huge amount to distinguish between Skylake and Kaby Lake. The manufacturing process is the same, as is the microarchitecture. Plus, it severely limits your ability to choose the right version of Windows for you, at least at this time.

The improved graphics performance is welcome, as is the ability to better handle 4K video. Its native support for USB 3.1 is a huge bonus, as will be the support for Intel Optane SSDs when they finally hit the market later this year. But is that enough of a reason to upgrade? I’m not sure. Probably not.

But the next generation of chips, called Cannonlake and due to be released in 2017, will be even better and will use a 10-nanometer manufacturing process. Intel has a roadmap to eventually transition to a 7-nanometer manufacturing process, at which point they’ll probably have to transition away from silicon as a base material.

So if you want to use windowz  and have the latest chips you need Windows 10 or ether migrate to Linux ..I dual boot Windows 10 and Linux Mint 18 on my Intel box. im not going out and paying for a upgrade too watch 4k  on a PC. I can put Windows 7 or 8.1 back in and get updates for along time and  even if you buy netfilx  4k video protection  only lets you stream them trough a box on a TV ,  1080p is good enough for me .  One year i wil,l when they have a  completing reason to do so or my stuff blows up , but not in  2016 :P

What's the big deal about Win 10 costing $100-200?  Flexible full licenses have cost that much forever with OEM (more restricted) licenses costing $80-110 since WinVista.  If you need the flexibility, then the full blown license is worth it.  I don't get why people act like this is an outrageous new fee.

The big deal is this there taking away  features  in Windows 10 Pro to try force business to sign a contract with Microsoft for Enterprise to get these features back this cost way more than OEM . also when a business need new PCs there no way to downgrade them to windows 7 Pro  tell 2019 -2020 .

Its not a big deal to me no how because if im not buying a new PC im not paying for Windows 10  it was free for me. Windows is in the price of a PC  no one is going go out go out and pay $100-200 for a key.when they would not even take  it for free.

All versions  of Apple OS software  is free for years , All Google OS software is  free even to vendors and  most of Linux has always been free . Windows 10 is Microsoft's  last  desperate attempt  to sell something in a world,  were everyone else gives there O/S away for free to profit from there services they have. You cant make money from you're services  if people dont have it so they give it away free.

OS is not about paying a flat fee anymore, its about getting you on it and selling you things they have or making profits from using there software with ads and things. Google makes most there money trough ads and data trough its software  and services .Apple makes most its money from selling apps, units  and things  ..If they charged for the OS they could not take advantage  of this . They need people on there OS to make money  . Microsoft needs people on Windows 10, people dont need them .  80% dont use Windows 10 desktop  and 99% dont use Windows 10 phones.

When i see a post that says Windows 10 would be a good reason to buy a  PC i laugh, and think no it would not , hardware vendors really dont  have nothing to offer me that my old Windows 7 PC that came with Vista on it can't do .How much they get paid by M$ to post this ,they could even give it away for free?

I buy PCs so i can have a variety  of OS so i dont get bored and Windows 10 was free, so why i need a new one when  the one Im on is a 2015 model  was free upgrade to windows 10?  I dont have one i  have 4 lol .

Almost everyone has a PC or 4 by now  :)

Maybe is more cost effective for them. Eventually we all be using Windows 10 or whatever's name (for Windows users) they used. Technology is fast changing and new thecnology requires new software and thecnology changes do not wait for no one. Just my opinion.

It doesn't mean that you can't install Windows 7 or 8. It means Microsoft won't support these chips on earlier version of Windows. So, if a bug has been found in these versions with a Kaby Lake chip (very unlikely), Microsoft would not fix that.

Microsoft already said it will stop releasing any updates other then listed as "CRITICAL" for Skylake chipset starting in 2017. So if you want to have a PC for legacy gaming you either have to use a VM or older chipsets.

I still like to play a game of Red Alert 2 or Sim City 3000 some days just for the fun of it. It won't play/work on my Skylake W10 platform. I have to use either legacy W7 machine that has dual-boot of XP for those extra picky pieces of software that don't even like to run well on x64 architecture. And this is already old AM2 platform.

most old games  will run in Linux under Wine even on Skylake as well that be better to duel boot than using a VM  lol .Play on Linux you can install DX 9 and install any wine ever made. its a if you're going to use Windows to play old games best to keep old PC  around even if you dont hook it up too the internet because playing in VM would be awful bro .

only issue is cannot adjust backlight- seems to be 100 % which is probably where I would set it....
