Here’s how to enable the new feature in Windows 10

Enhanced notification are also available in Windows Defender

One of the least talked-about features that come with the Windows 10 Anniversary Update concerns Windows Defender, which is evolving from a basic security product to a fully featured antivirus solution that can actually protect your system against the newest malware.

Called “Limited Period Scanning,” the new feature is available right now in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update Settings app in Update & security > Windows Defender > Limited Periodic Scanning, but note that you’re not going to see it unless you are running third-party antivirus protection on your computer.

Starting with Windows 8 (and also in Windows 10), Windows Defender is the default antivirus solution, and it is automatically disabled once third-party security apps are installed. But with the Anniversary Update, Windows Defender continues to perform automatic scans in the background at moments that are the most convenient to you (such as when the PC is idle) to make sure that no malware reaches your data.

Automatic scans no matter your antivirus

Microsoft guarantees that no compatibility issues will be experienced no matter your third-party security product, and the performance impact on your PC will be minimal because these scans are scheduled at the moments when you’re not using the machine.

“These periodic scans will utilize Automatic Maintenance - to ensure the system chooses optimal times based on minimal impact to the user, PC performance, and energy efficiency - or customers can schedule these scans. Limited Periodic Scanning is intended to offer an additional line of defense to your existing antivirus program’s real-time protection,” Microsoft said in May, when it introduced this feature as part of Insider preview build 14352.

Windows Defender is also getting some other extra features in the Anniversary Update and now supports enhanced notifications, which are messages that inform you of the health status of the PC. Even if you turn these notifications off, Windows Defender still sends critical alerts no matter what, just to make sure that you’re aware of something that needs immediate attention.

i have Windows Defender disabled  were you can turn any of this on. If i wanted a 2nd anti malware i would just use MAM Pro but i dont use this in realtime anymore .. Its been since the early 2000s since i had a serious infection . :)

More concerned with possible false alerts and numerous notifications since you can't turn all of them off.  Microsoft doesn't have a very  good track record in detecting and getting rid of malware.  LIke Steven36, I would disable and run MAM Pro if I needed malware protection.

I let the Windows Defender stay for a while, other anti viruses slow down the system. with Redstone update, when I press the power button on my case, Windows 10 lock screen appears first and then my Led monitor's logo shows up! boot up takes not more than 3-4 seconds on a WD black HDD.

Since most of the people will pirate Win10 Enterprise after this crappy update, why don't we make Windows defender search for cracks

in the backround and say its  for "security reasons"

Good call Microtards

Thats if it works on there system  , some people install it and Redstone  freezes up there system , even if they use Enterprise, all Enterprise does is add a few group policy settings that can be got around easy that they removed from Pro. just sounds like a excuse to pirate too me . Once they start selling enterprise as a service you know who there going to go after 1st too. right?  All they doing is watching forums  and stuff and removing peoples workarounds . Instead of  trying to prevent piracy they are  worried about removing group policy . Oh wait Windows  has only been a paid upgrade for a few days its too early  too know if they will go after pirates like they did before .

the defender is shit still.i forgot to turn it off and it recognised the winrar fff keygen as virus, even after deleting it from the source and from defender itself, it still kept popping up that there is a virus. turned it off completely now. using mbam on demand scanner now and no more daily, weeky or monthly scans from defender.

Same reason I gave up Avast for NOD32, i got tired of excluding files I only recommend  Malwarebytes as a 2nd opinion scanner  it you want run 2 real times it works OK Its better than WD even  . . NOD32  even v8 works on every version of Windows 10 for a year  V8  all you have to do is use pre release updates  it  keeps working.

its not about what can or cannot be done, its about how the program was behaving. it should have stopped popping up when the system was clean but it couldn;t.

also after disabling it, i see my system boot up faster, and the disk load is not much upon startup which would have been there because of defender scanning.i know the stuff i download, so i m safe that way, i just needed a second opinion which MAM provides silently.

It could be very difficult to get WinDef back, once disabled/removed ! Especially when you have other firewall/anti-virus running.

Maybe ,some day you will regret it...........
