Opera says Microsoft's claims about Edge battery life are wrong -- but all's not as it seems

The other day, Microsoft made some bold claims about the power consumption of Edge. The company claimed that its latest web browser is the most battery-friendly when compared to Chrome, Opera and Firefox. Having been beaten into third place behind Chrome, but ahead of Firefox, Opera has hit back.

The company says that its own tests show -- surprise, surprise -- that it is Opera which is the most efficient battery sipper. Opera says that its own battery saving feature boosts battery life by up to 50 percent when compared to Chrome. The company criticizes Microsoft for failing to reveal its methodology, accusing it of a lack of transparency. But Opera is guilty of being disingenuous, as it fails to compare like with like.

In a post on the Opera blog, Błażej Kaźmierczak says that the company was taken aback by Microsoft's claim. He says that when Opera was being optimized, Edge was ignored: "we didn’t pay attention to was Microsoft Edge, mostly because [it] is only available on Windows 10". He goes on to reveal Opera's own batch of tests that show that far from being the best performing browser, Edge is actually knocked into second place.

The graph clearly shows that in Opera's test, Chrome gives 2 hours 54 minutes of battery life, Edge gives 3 hours 12 minutes, and Opera gives five minutes short of four hours. To back up its claims, there's even a video showing the methodology ("Our test (which you can replicate) show..."), and full details of the tests are provided:

This looks good for Opera, and bad for Microsoft. Opera throws down the gauntlet, saying:

Quote

If Microsoft really wants to prove that its browser performs better than others (in any regard), the company should be transparent about its methodology so that others can replicate it.

Better luck next time, Microsoft!

But Opera is not being entirely honest. In its tests, it works with Microsoft Edge (25.10586.0.0) and "the latest version of Google Chrome" (51.0.2704.103). You would expect Opera to offer up the latest version of its own browser to make for a fair test, but no. Instead, what is used is "Opera Developer (39.0.2248.0) with native ad blocker and power saver enabled".

So a developer version of Opera -- a version used by a small subsection of the browser's user base -- is pitted against the publicly released versions of Chrome and Edge. That hardly seems fair.

Play the game, Opera.

Opera has been out of the market  every since they decided to become just another chromium based browser, they had a good browser and ruined it, only thing a chromium based browser can do it try to offer you things mostly that can be installed via extensions and hold on to some of the outdated code ,  It's like  cars that have the same engine  they look different but run the same. There's chromium based  , Gecko based and Trident are the most used codes now and I find Gecko based best  for power users and ease of use , they may not be as good at streaming videos but i watch videos mostly in my media players  :)

It's a good browser now too and you're wrong, the back end does not dictate the front end.. well at least not for software anyway ;)

I dont see how it's any better than than the other 1000 chrome clones?  they baked in a adblocker , web proxy extension and a battery saver , but they sold out too china  witch is known to bake in back doors in there software,  They took 3 baby steps forward and a giant one step backward   but if you want to watch 1080p netfilx you have to use Trident.. Gecko based browsers have all kinds of addons  not found in Trident or Chrome and have better privacy. .

Opera dont have  that  special something that makes it stand out from the rest,  because its baked in goods can be  replaced with a extension of you're choice. And its low marketshare proves its not very liked.  Its not only not even the same browser it was in  2012 now in 2016 its no longer even owned by the same company Telenor , its now owned by the Chinese Consortium. . They waited tell they sold out over 3 years after dieing to try to save it . That would be like Yahoo trying ever recapture its glory days. There just past internet history, that a few still use because it has the name Opera stamped on it its not even Opera any more for years.   :(

I used the developer version when they 1st put the web proxy in it.. 1st time i used it since v12 and i uninstalled it, when @Batu69 posted the Chinese Consortium bought it. :P

Even Mozilla has enough sense to  change it's name when they make a new fork and not beat a dead horse .1st they made Netscape Now Firefox and Servo is in it's future

Does it need to be better? Is any browser obviously better than any other? They all have their strengths and weaknesses, pick what you like. I think Opera is the nicest and most modern looking of all browsers and certainly has some benefits over Chrome in resource use I wish I could have Chrome with Opera's UI. What specifically about Opera makes it not a good browser? I used it for about a year about a year and a half ago and it worked great.
