15-Year-Old Windows XP Refuses to Die Despite Windows 10 Push

Windows XP has lost just 4 percent in the last 12 months

Support for Windows XP ended on April 8, 2014, and despite Microsoft’s warnings, users who were still running it at that time refused to upgrade. And what’s worse, many are still doing it these days, despite the fact that Microsoft launched Windows 10 and pushed so hard for everyone to adopt it.

A quick look at market share figures shows that Windows XP not only didn’t lose too many users when Windows 10 launched, but it even gained more, managing to improve its score for two consecutive months. As compared to May 2015, Windows XP only dropped approximately 4.5 percent, which is extremely low for an operating system that no longer receives updates.

What happened when Windows 10 launched?

One year ago, Windows XP was running on 14.60 percent of desktop computers in the world and gradually dropped until it reached 11.72 percent in July, the same month when Windows 10 officially got to see daylight.

In August, however, Windows XP recovered to 12.14 percent and then jumped to 12.21 percent the next month, before eventually starting to decline once again in September.

The drop continued until January 2016, when Windows XP once again managed to increase its share from 10.93 percent to 11.42 percent, thus going back to the same level as six months before.

In the last few months, Windows XP has continued to lose market share points, but it does it at the slowest and most painful pace possible. It dropped from 10.90 percent in March to 10.63 percent the next month before eventually going down to 10.09 percent in May.

Without a doubt, it’ll take many more months until Windows XP disappears completely, but these stats also show that Windows 10 still can’t make a difference no matter how hard Microsoft is trying.

After 2 years official Microsoft support ended, more and more third-party applications NOT supporting Windows XP are being released. Even despite this drawback, I believe Windows XP users will continue sticking to it until their computer continues working. Simply, because in first place those computers do the job and continue covering the requirements of users, second, many users WORLDWIDE simpy don't feel easy spending for a new computer, in third place, those old computers can't be upgraded efficiently to some more recent version of Windows and users really are not interested in Linux alternatives because they have all the applications they need supporting Windows XP. I should end this post saying LONG LIVE THE XP but the reality is that the percentage of XP users will continue declining, slowly but surely, until inexorably will end making company to earlier versons of Windows and old-timers like OS/2, DOS and CP/M

Some of my Windows 7 machines have WinXP Mode installed on them, others have WinXP in a VM and I still have several systems with XP (and 98SE) installed on them.  Every OS has a use and purpose, just because it isn't supported doesn't mean it is dead.  Your parents no longer support you, are you dead?  OSes have lives too, despite what Dr 'Microsoft' Kevorkian is trying to kill off.

I use Win XP and will probably continue using it until my computer bites the dust and needs replaced. In that case I will probably install Win 7 (definitely not Vista or 8). I imagine in 10 or so years Win 7 users will be the "quaint" equivalent of today's Win XP users. My computer does what I require and I'm comfortable with it.....I wouldn't wear a red and green striped pullover just because it was the fashion and nearly everyone else was wearing one. :D:D:D

It's more like 3 years and 7 months and  8 days  when Windows 7 becomes like XP  and Microsoft blames XP users refusing to update is why there trying to push Win 7 and win 8.1  on to windows 10 . Me myself there's no way id use a system without updates id leave Microsoft before id stay on XP  unless of course i  didn't have nothing but a old XP from 13 or 14 years ago and could not afford a used or new PC that would run at lest a new  Linux.Distro .

My computer is 3 and a half years old, not so ancient but not top of the range either. I'm happy with it. If you can tell me that Win 7 or Win 10 are absolutely impervious to viruses, malware, and hacking then I'll upgrade tomorrow. Apart from the protection programs you use, a lot of the danger lies in what sites you visit and what applications you open without thinking. Being up to date with Microsoft's security updates obviously helps in terms of protection, but for goodness sake, even government security services get hacked and I'm sure they have an extra special system of security updates. It all boils down to usage habits and lady luck.:D:D:D

My reasons for using Windows 8.1  or Windows 7 or a newer Linux Distro really didn't have nothing to do with malware ..It was the fact my XP boxes could not do what i needed it too do i bought a new XP one with 2 gig of ram  about 2 years before i bought  a Windows 8 pc I been on windows 8.1 since 2014 the last time i was on XP online other than in VM was 2011 . after 10 years i got bored with it but I'm a computer geek and  like testing new things I dont care what no one else uses as long i use what I want too :)

I put XP Sp3 back on one i have from 2002 because i cant find a newer Linux distro that runs fast enough on it ,  but always i run into a problem with finding drivers for my Wifi adapter for it  .With Linux even though it runs slow with it  on it,  it hooks right up too my wifi  no drivers needed  .Same reason i like windows 8.1 better than 7 i hate having to hunt down dumb drivers . :)

My current number-1 computer came with Windows 7. I gave 7 a fair trial and hated it, so I wiped the disk and installed XP; despite dire warnings, I had no difficulty with drivers. Should the computer go to the Happy Hunting Ground, I could and would buy the latest and do the exact same thing.

Why do journalists start a sentence with the word 'And' and put an 'and' after a comma?

Poor English language skills.

Microsoft should just release a XP second edition.

XP was a breath of fresh air when it was released, it was like the perfect girlfriend, no need to upgrade.

Still the Amish witch are descents of the Dutch still  use lantern's  and ride in a horse and buggy  there religion believes that modren technology is evil .. Most  of them have plenty of money  because there skilled at making things ..This is proof that  technology is really a luxury and not really a necessity . And really no one has to do nothing but live and die.  If something  really bad was too happen like a major disaster even the Governments of the world have became  gullible to luxury and even they would suffer but people like the Amish it would never phase them, People are not as smart as they think they are and most likely will be the cause of there own destruction .

And Technology has always been upgrading  but a classic car from the 1950s or 60s is nicer than a car from 2016 that can be hacked.  As far as Windows PCs  they not changed  very much at all  in the 21st century. That's the reasons Intel  have stores that dont sell nothing just for display to try too give you a  reason  to buy . Back in 2001 when XP came out  it was nothing for us to go out and spend a $1000 for a new PC  to use on dial up . Now days they have a hard time  selling a much better PC  for $400 or $500  because every one has PCs  by now and  there's no very compiling reason for people  to buy again .  People every since 2013 have this attitude that what they have is good enough .  Most everyone that have a PC  have a smartphone and many people who dont have a PC have a smartphone .  Many people dont use there own PCs but on weekends when there home and be on smartphones 5 days a week and many people be on smartphones 7 days a week why would they invest a lot of money in something they dont turn on very often?
