VLC releasing Universal Windows 10 App in May, preview coming to Insiders next week

Earlier today, after seeing a tweet from developer Thomas Nigro, we delivered the news that the Universal Windows Platform VLC player app could be ready soon. Now, a few hours later, we can also report to you that the VLC Universal Windows 10 app will be released in May. The new VLC app will also be coming to Insiders as soon as next week.

 

As per the company’s blog post, developers have been quite silent on their work with building the VLC UWP app for Windows 10 and did not want to set a deadline until they were 100% confident that it would be complete. The UWP app will play everything, everywhere, and will only be supported on Redstone builds, and not Threshold (November Update, TH2) builds

 

VLC developers have noted, the upcoming Insider versions won’t have that many more features over the version currently in the Windows Store. The current set of features for the app will be present in the May/June timeframe with newer features added in on weekly basis. The blog post also warns that the last updates for Windows 8.1. Windows Phone 8.1, and Windows RT will be released in May, followed by a complete drop of support.  Lastly, VLC developers also make note that Xbox One and Windows 10 IoT versions of the app are also in the works.

I hope other developers will follow. It should have been that for a few years now (this was my initial thought about Windows 8 that the Windows Store will replace the old win32 installers).
