Stats show that Windows XP lives on despite EOS

Windows XP continues to be one of the top OSes worldwide

Microsoft pulled the plug on Windows XP in April 2014, and despite the company’s efforts to convince users still running this OS version to upgrade, the 15-year-old platform lives on these days and it does it in a pretty shocking way.

Windows XP is currently the third-most used desktop operating system across the world, with statistics provided by Net Applications showing that it has survived the launch of Windows 7, 8.1, and 10 without too much effort.

Truth is, Windows XP has indeed declined over the years, but it’s still impressive that it manages to remain so widely used despite the fact that it hasn’t received any updates in the past 24 months.

Windows XP’s market share

At this point, Windows 7 continues to be the top desktop operating system across the world with a share of 51.89 percent, so no less than 1 in 2 computers are running it.

Windows 10 is the runner-up with 14.15 percent while Windows XP is next with 10.90 percent. Windows 8.1 is on the fourth place with 9.56 percent, so Windows XP actually has more users than an operating system launched four years ago (for the record, Windows XP was released in 2001).

What’s more surprising is that Windows XP actually has more users than it had in November 2015, as the operating system actually recovered in December and January and increased its share.

In November, Windows XP was running on 10.59 percent of PCs, growing to 10.93 percent the next month and to 11.42 percent in January. It started dropping again in February to 11.24 percent and now to 10.90 percent in February.

The Windows XP case

While it’s very clear that Windows XP is no longer a secure platform, this doesn’t seem to be reason enough for users to upgrade. And that can only be worrying for Microsoft.

The Redmond-based software giant can’t convince its users to upgrade to a newer operating system and 10 percent of them prefer to continue running a platform that’s 15 years old, despite the fact that four different versions have launched since it first got to see daylight.

Microsoft might experience another Windows XP moment in 2020 when the company pulls the plug on Windows 7. Given the fact that Windows 7 is still powering more than 50 percent of desktop PCs across the world, many users are likely to continue running it even after this deadline.

Only way Microsoft will ever win the PC  desktop war is if they keep windows x free forever . The ones  that didn't switch over to smartphones  . The ones who refuse to update from  Windows XP and Windows 7 just to use legacy apps and the fact MAC OSX upgrades are free and GNU Linux is free period . The days of buying a O/S  are long over . And all this is attacking Microsoft from every side there the only ones left trying to keep charging people for upgrades on old hardware. Its going to evidently eat away at windows O/S for Home users  . Witch home users is over half there marketshare by the way. People are only interested in buying units every 10 years and hardware to game on . No one is interested  in buying there O/S at Home . All those Numbers  dont mean much when you cant sell units and they count every thing that can run Windows x  as a users . They need some kind of serious overhaul  to bring them out of  there depression . Even if they won the desktop o/s war by keeping it free forever they still never sold much of nothing and lost the O/S war in general . windows is dying and im going dance  at  it's funeral. And even  there own users are helping out.

When including smartphones Android has the largest installed base of all operating systems, and it is the most popular OS in Asia and Africa, by web usage. Since 2013, devices running it have been selling more than Windows, iOS and Mac OS X devices combined. That makes Android the most popular smartphone operating system

Main problem of Windows XP users is that the computers they use don't support 100% a more recent version. Considering that in 2015 and up to present were sold worldwide about 300.000.000 computers (according to available statistics which shouldn't include tablets) these numbers signify that XP users are not upgrading to more recent computers. Many computer users simply don't have available the money to buy a new computer and others feel that current computer with XP covers their needs.

Looks Windows 7 users feel more or less the same. Against Microsoft's wishes, they don't rush to get Windows 10 and probably an important number of those who upgraded, later decided to downgrade because they had some kind of issue, real or mental, with windows 10, mostly with early releases.

Just as an example, when Windows ME was released, I upgraded from Windows 98 SE, just to downgrade some days later: it was simply intolerable. Later, when Windows XP's original version was released I bought a new computer, upgraded later to SP2. Later, in early 2007 I got a new computer; already Vista was released but the computer came with XP. At some moment I tried to install Vista but it had a serious crash and I decided to reinstall XP.  I'm still using that same computer. Additionally we have in the family 2 Windows 7 and a Windows 8.1 laptops and none of them ever considered to upgrade to Windows 10. Maybe will upgrade the 8.1 if Microsoft continues it's free upgrade politics and finally releases a really improved version of Windows 10

I have computers that still run XP and even 98SE.  They serve a purpose because even if a newer OS would run on them the software that is on them would not run.  No one really cares if Microsoft drops support or even if they give away a new OS.  People are going to run the OS they feel comfortable with and not have to learn a new OS every time Microsoft decides to have a bowel movement and push out a new OS.  Windows 10 is the biggest turd yet.

I ordered four new high end laptops for home and all of them are coming with Windows 8.1.  Later I found out I could have gotten them with Windows 7, so I may get a couple of those this week.  Computer manufacturers know that people don't want Windows 10 which is why they still sell units with 7 and 8.1, though they advertise free upgrades to Windows 10, as if anyone really wants that.

Shocking but true.

Straycat19 is quite correct: no one cares whether Microsoft "supports" his OS or not. I've been saying that ever since "support" for XP ended. I don't need or want anything from Microsoft.

I'll continue to use XP until Microsoft produces something I like better...which I'm beginning to think will never happen. (I wouldn't use any version of Windows were it not for the fact that I use software that isn't available for Linux.)

I feel the same. I did once install Windows 7 a few years ago, but I uninstalled it about 10 days later and re-installed XP. My computer is 3 years old, SATA, 2 DVD recorders, 500GB Western Digital hard drive, Intel 2.7 GHz processor, 4 GB DDR3 RAM. I'm not a gamer, I don't need lights and whistles or something that can fly me to Venus. Win XP serves my usage and my needs.....and I feel comfortable with it. I point blank refuse to change just because of MS pressure and peer pressure telling me that I should. If the day arrives that I feel the urge to install a new OS I will do so. I'm not gonna dance to MS's tune every time they release a "new" OS...I am not a sheep!!!!

By the way, I also have never had a mobile phone...I refuse to fill the pockets of corporate executives by paying to speak!!!. The only good use for a mobile phone is to have it buried with you in case you wake up in the coffin.:D:D:D

I wouldn't buy a computer with Windows 7 or 8.1 to upgrade to Windows 10; that means looking for trouble or as we say in Spanish: "Buscarle 5 patas al gato" (literarly looking for a cat with 5 feet) A new computer I'm buying with the intention to use for Windows 10 should already come with Windows 10 OEM installed.. BTW, I don't have any intention to buy a new computer on short term, it's just the hypotetical case.

I'm not disagreeing with you, but my PC hardware actually supports Windows 10 just fine (I'm a Windows Insider). I tried giving feedback to Microsoft, but they don't listen very well. Still using XP as a result.

The sad thing  PC   industry  almost dead  Almost 1.3 Billion Smartphones Sold In 2015

http://www.androidheadlines.com/2016/01/trendforce-almost-1-3-billion-smartphones-sold-2015.html

For the year, 2015 PC shipments totaled 288.7 million units were shipped

http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/3270418

Smartphone is expected  to slow down some in the coming years PC are on the way going to be replaced with other devices like Ultramobile (Premium)  PC Market expected to grow to 306 million in 2018  Smartphones are expected to selling over  2 billion a year, Still any growth  pcs may have will never be able to compare  to the smart phone O/S market .  And Gartner has been wrong time and time again pc sales have yet to increase. so far . Windows 10 has done nothing but decrease sales in the PC industry because it's free, those extra units  of PC or because they expect business to buy again by 2018 but these wont even be you're traditional Desktop /Laptop devices  . Traditional Desktop /Laptop devices  are excepted to keep shipping less every year.  Many people put P4 and AMD XP  pcs in the garbage now days .

Reality  is XP may have lost many users but a lot them switched over to phones instead of pcs  . Most everyone has  2 or 3 , 4 or 5 old PCs laying around to run legacy apps if needed . So Windows 10 cant save the PC its beyond  saving  new tech has been in the process of replacing  it for years .   The reason Smartphone is expected  to slow down will be the same reason almost everyone will own one but Smartphone's have something going PCs  dont have.
People lease to own them so they can just renew there lease for a newer model  and they sell them a new one :)

Microsoft dont listen to nothing no one says unless already  on there agenda  like Live tiles , Linux , Phone Apps for pc , etc there the ones damning PCs to a smart phone existence.  Because the masses are on Smartphones they are delusional  to think they will be able to sell PCs on the fact there  compatible  with phones .  The way there headed  some free Android Desktop O/S thats not windows will end up getting the masses on Desktop at home  . We can just use Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to run legacy apps  because Microsoft is trying replace them anyways.  I need x64 too do the things I like too do and  most  of it i dont need windows at all.
