A fast and free alternative to Windows and OS X

Most of the world's personal computers run Windows, but Windows isn't the only operating system around. Right now, you're probably thinking of Apple's OS X, and mobile operating systems like Android and iOS.

However, there's another operating system you might want to know about. It's called Linux and it's been around for a long time. In fact, it runs a large chunk of the world's servers and embedded computers. Android is based on it, and OS X is based on an offshoot of Linux's predecessor. So, what does that have to do with you?

A few good things about Linux are that it's free, most of the software for it is free, and it's very secure. There are also dozens of versions around targeted toward certain audiences. Linux Mint is one we've talked about before that's a good Windows replacement.

However, Linux Mint still has a learning curve for new users, and the default version requires newer hardware to run well. For older hardware, or a more streamlined experience, you might try a Linux version called elementary OS.

Elementary OS is visually more similar to OS X than Windows, but it's simple enough for anyone to use. It's also very lightweight, which means it runs great on older hardware, even low-end hardware from the mid-2000s.

You can try elementary OS before completely replacing Windows or OS X by creating a bootable USB drive using a program like Rufus. You can check out elementary OS' step-by-step installation guide for more.

Download Instructions

When you go to download elementary OS, it will ask for you to purchase the program. It's a community project, so making a donation helps the developers.

However, if you aren't sure yet if you're going to use it, simply enter a Custom amount of $0 and the button will change from "Purchase elementary OS" to "Download elementary OS." Click the button to get started.

Good morning. I have older x32 desktop that was running Vista that I decided to try to convert to Linux. Since Linux Mint was most popular disto, downloaded it. After a few fits and starts (not techno-oriented by any means, learned not to check anything that says 'encrypt' when installing), I did get it to work. Although still finding my way around (using it now), Mint does have a x32 version that works great. Like having new computer, or extending life of old computer a couple years.  Nothing against Elementary OS, but if I can get Mint to work on my PC, I believe anyone can.

Nice post and best regards.

I think my hardware is too new and fast for this because I keep getting the same error, even remade the usb and the dvd and rebuilt the VM.  Once that error appears it locks up.  I was building and operating computers before you were hatched, so I think I know how to do it.

I've used this OS and Mint again the problem with Linux is lack of support for software and games and just general programming. there are so many hack commands you must do to get lots of stuff to install or work perfect that average users will always be lost. I sure hope this changes like you all I am getting tired of the slow down of Micro$oft and bugs and so forth forcing vomit back down our throats, it's just to bad Microsoft couldn't be broken up and forced to share there source code kernel code to cross platform for programs and games I don't see how they can legally lock it all to their system this should be considered monopoly in some kind of way in a non corrupt peaceful friendly morally correct world.

I find it annoying that we can't hide the top panel in Elementary OS.

It's okay if you have a 24" screen.

Plus, you have to scourge the web to find a Frey compatible "elementary tweak tool".

Otherwise, a nice distro.

That's one the reasons  I never  really liked Ubuntu because of this but i read that's fixing to change were you can move to the bottom in Ubuntu at lest  .. There are some Ubuntu  flavors  that have it at the bottom . Lubuntu , Kubuntu and there's Ubuntu derivatives like Mint , Netrunner and Linux Light that do.

Ive  tested a lot of distros  there's always something i want not in  the software catalog  and i have  to search  the Internet to find it  but on windows you have too  search  for everything  you want to install so there you go.

Some of the newest  hardware requires  4.2 kernel  or higher  like @shroeder said   if you dont know much about  Linux  and have real new hardware i recommended to use the latest updates of Ubuntu  or its Flavors that way 4.2 or newer will be pre installed . My Hardware on my Linux machine  is 3 years old  AMD Radeon HD and it works  OK with  Elementary OS out of the box   It also works OK  with distros with 4.2 kernel  and newer .  More or less this distro is more or less for beginners  it targets windows and mac users there's  a beta version of it,  I'm not sure what updated in it though .  Over on other forums some have these issues with some distros with newer hardware the devs will tell them to update the kernel  every time . So if you  knew much about Linux you would had knew this to begin with. It was a  pretty regular topic at Ubuntu before   Ubuntu 14.04.4 LTS  came out with the 4.2 kernel.

Since you're  problem is getting it to work out of the box you're best option would be

Move to another Linux distribution (temporarily) where their release date permitted developers to test and support a more recent Linux kernel than elementary OS

Options: when your hardware is not supported

https://www.elementarynow.com/hardware-supported/

Elementary OS Freya  is based on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS  you need to wait tell  Elementary OS Loki comes out based  on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS to test again because you cant boot into it to update the kernel  to 4.2 or newer or you could use a PC with a little older hardware  . :)

Elementary OS 0.4 Loki will bring support for Wayland, Red Hat’s new display server, support for HiDPI high resolution displays will be implemented, AppCenter (a new Software Center) will replace the existing one.

Also, an elementary Account will be created for connecting the users with the elementary services and other elementary users, new user account pictures, improved icons and smarter audio management will be implemented, support for synchronizing system settings will be added, while automatic driver detection during installation, smarter software updates, AppArmor integration are also planned.

And, last but not least (known so far), Elementary OS 0.4 Loki will receive security patches since 2021

And I doubt that you were  messing with pcs before i was hatched  because im no spring chicken even before i liked computers  i worked on electronics every since i was a kid  . And what you done 24 years ago on Linux or windows want get you very far today there are teenagers that are computing geniuses so that has fudge all to do with it , because tech is always changing .
