We reported last year that the Ubuntu developers planned on implementing VPN support on the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system, and they've just announced the finalization of the new feature.

Łukasz Zemczak of Canonical reports today that the OTA-10 update for Ubuntu Touch is getting closer and closer to a final release, which should be out for all supported Ubuntu Phone devices, as well as the new Ubuntu tablet, BQ Aquaris M10, later this month or during the first week of April.

He also notes that the new VPN feature has been finalized and that, after updating to OTA-10, users will notice a VPN panel in the System Settings. Additionally, there will be lots of updates to the pay and location service, better support for Web Apps in the Browser app, and improvements to Indicator-Datetime and the EDS Plugin for Qt PIM module's Organizer.

"We're getting closer and closer to OTA-10," says Łukasz Zemczak, Canonical Foundations. "Another bit of potentially interesting info for some. We now use a special click-lock mechanism for staging clicks on rc-proposed images that depend on unreleased frameworks. Due to the current click limitations, we cannot publish new click packages if the dependent framework is not yet released in a stable image."

"OTA-10 will support Canonical's first-ever Ubuntu tablet"

We'll remind everyone, again, that the OTA-10 update for the Ubuntu Touch mobile operating system is now in feature freeze, which means that no new features are being added to the rc-proposed repositories, where the development happens these days, and that Canonical's first-ever Ubuntu tablet will be supported.

OTA-10 will be, of course, the first in many updates for the BQ Aquaris M10 Ubuntu Edition tablet, which should be available for purchase in the coming days from the BQ Online Store. We will be back with more interesting news about the Ubuntu Touch OTA-10 update as soon as we have an official release date and changelog.
