Windows 10 Upgrade Reportedly Starting Automatically on Windows 7 PCs

Don’t forget that this is a “recommended” update!

It’s no secret that Microsoft is quite aggressive with its Windows 10 upgrade campaign for Windows 7 and 8.1 computers, but new reports coming from users across the world reveal that the new operating system is installed even if they haven’t specifically allowed it to.

A post on reddit that has received quite a lot of attention in the last few hours reveals that “Windows 7 computers are being reported as automatically starting the Windows 10 upgrade without permission,” with several users confirming in the comment section that this is indeed the case.

And yet, there are several things to be taken into consideration when saying that the Windows 10 installer is kicked off without user permission.

First of all, starting this year Microsoft is offering Windows 10 as a recommended update, so when you install new patches, the new OS is by default selected too. Since this report comes only a couple of days after this month’s Patch Tuesday, the chances are that these users left the Windows 10 upgrade selected in the Windows Update list, so it’s not happening entirely without their permission.

Users will be “clearly prompted whether to continue or not

What’s odd, however, is that even if Windows 10 is indeed marked as a recommended update, it should still prompt you to begin the install, so users are still supposed to be allowed to choose whether to deploy it or not. Terry Myerson, head of the OS group at Microsoft, warned in October that this could happen though.

“Depending upon your Windows Update settings, this may cause the upgrade process to automatically initiate on your device. Before the upgrade changes the OS of your device, you will be clearly prompted to choose whether or not to continue,” he said.

Despite all of these, however, all users who are upgraded to Windows 10, either optionally or automatically, have 30 days to downgrade to their previous version of the OS. So if you don’t like Windows 10 and don’t plan to stick with it, use this option and return to Windows 7 or 8.1 and remember to always check twice before installing new updates. You never know what’s in there.

Microsoft turned the  switch on  to Get Windows 10 app  KB 3035583  most of them been installing  this update  since June 2015 . Now  many are forced to roll back and never install this update and some are even switching to Linux  because windows 10 is bricking  there machines .  They should of knew sooner or latter. it was going to happen.  :)

That;s bs, because the majority will keep using windows because they use it for Facebook and Gaming . Tell someone sues the socks off of them for bricking there pcs you will keep reading  horror stories about people having to roll back up tell when ever they decide to charge money for the O/S  then it  will stop. Even the people that upgraded for free will be in pain from the cost of windows 10 once its no longer free.

This guy was right on the money.

Because people are dumb and people like shiny free things. Then in a while when the years free upgrade is over, the people who upgraded from 7 or 8 will need to rebuild their PC and reinstall Windows, only now that upgrade you got for free is STILL an upgrade so you have to install the previous OS first then upgrade but guess what? The W10 upgrade is no longer free so you have to pay. Its basically ransomware. Or heroin :D

There will be a lot of pissed off people when they realize

You probably don't believe the Earth is round either but it is and Windows 10 does.  Just my observationn based upon over 50 computers I have seen since June that were 'bricked' and had to be fully reinstalled because they could not be rolled back either.

Well, csmdew, you have the right not to believe. But calling anyone an idiot, well, things like that make you lose any right.
You may be knowing much, but the so-called idiot certainly mastered knowledge that you do not know...

non compatible hardware.

When Microsoft  Forces Windows 10  on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users  and it bricks the PC because they dont have compatible HW  or there vendor  only supports drivers for older O/S  that's Microsoft's  fault not the user .

2 hours ago, csmdew said:

just maybe the idiot operator

A idiot  would install Windows 10 on purpose and try to force non working drivers and hardware to work  ...There's lots bricking  there own pcs  but that's not what this topics about its about  the fact Microsoft  is force installing it on there pcs and ether its bricked and you need to use a windows 10 dvd and roll back to you're old o/s or  reformat with there o/s.  Only the lucky ones that have problems with windows 10  can get in windows to roll back. I had one pc i rolled back because  Windows 10 booted  to slow  and the roll back didn't go well ether i had to run a windows repair  to fix it.

Also  I had another computer  that ran ok with windows 10 , but the only  windows 10 drivers ever going to be made for it was beta ones  they stop making them when the stable drivers came out  for my card.  After about 90 days  I started getting INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE error in Windows 10  I fixed it 2 or 3 times it always came back  after awhile it messed up the HHD I ended up replacing it and i never used windows 10 since to many bad experiences  with it on my end.

Some say there happy with Windows 10 and all its data mining . But many more say windows 7 or 8.1 is much more feasible because  it works with the newest stuff and old stuff that wont even run in windows 10.

But sooner or latter if we plain to use windows with support were all going to have to update to windows 10 . But there's a few of us that dont to  have to have windows at all . But that's only like 12% of the PC world who use Mac OSX and Linux  combined . Unless they plain to switch to using a phone or something  all the time .But the majority are depended  on Microsoft windows  for one reason are the other even most of the ones  that dont like windows 10  use windows . :P

People that use Linux  and Mac OSX  all the time dont really care because they dont have to worry with it.

Since windows 10 came out Linux's market share grew some but were it has a really small market share it dont really make any difference.

It bricks the operating system not the hardware stop feeding users bull****.  I have had this discussion before users dont want to listen Yes windows ten can brick the operating system making you have to format and install it cant and hasnt bricked any hardware stop lying users are making windows ten out to be like the anti-christ of computer software and operating systems jesus marian joseph.  You can tell your friends and family outside of this forum all the false beliefs you want I tired of seeing the risk of users getting dumber in here (over knowledge of windows ten).  Technically windows ten isnt free i remember a article that said microsoft put money aside to make up for giving windows ten free to windows seven and eight users Im sure some of you remember the article (its possible the article is wrong).  There are so many restrictions for the free upgrade that saying its free is deceiving.

Windows 10 Bricked my computer

You sound about like this guy.

If you get as far as a windows logo it definitely isn't bricked. In fact PCs don't ever really get "bricked" because even in the case of hardware failure, you can always get new parts.

Your OS install just needs to be repaired or reloaded. If you're not comfortable doing that yourself, just take it to a local pc repair place and pay them to do it.

It cost you 100s of dollars  to fix parts and labor but it didn't brick my PC what a joke.

When it bricked my Hardware it stop loading the windows logo it would say drive not found sometimes I tired to use my factory restore image to roll back to windows 8 it failed .I ran boot repair tools helped for a few days it was back then i clean installed Windows 10  and after awhile it was back  and  after awhile it bricked my HHD and after awhile i could not get it to boot at all .   . Lucky for me I had another HHD from a old junk machine and fixed it my self  I put Linux  on it and its worked good every since .

And they offer this free upgrade  to noobs  that should have a teach to install it for them even though it can mess up easy . Im a technical person  and it gave me problems.to the point i will never install it on HW  not made for Windows 10 on my pcs again. Smart technical people  dont fix  whats not broken . I learned my lesson not to mess up my pcs putting stuff on them when it was working fine  before I did.

Another easy way it brick a PC  is hang up during install or update.

Many people even on this forum  there HW failed after they upgraded it seems linked to upgrading old pcs  to windows 10.

Here are more stories of it  were there pcs worked fine before they done it.

Definition of Bricking

“Bricking” essentially means a device has turned into a brick. It may be an electronic device worth hundreds of dollars, but it’s now as useful as a brick (or perhaps a paperweight). A bricked device won’t power on and function normally.

A bricked device cannot be fixed through normal means. For example, if Windows won’t boot on your computer, your computer isn’t “bricked” because you can still install another operating system on it. However, if you tried to power your computer on and it didn’t work properly at all, making it impossible to install an operating system, you could consider the computer bricked.

The verb “to brick” means breaking a device in this way. For example, if someone says “I bricked my iPhone,” that’s a cry for help – their iPhone is no longer working properly.

“Bricking” generally means that a device isn’t recoverable through normal means and can’t be fixed, but some people may say a device is “bricked” even when it’s recoverable.

http://www.howtogeek.com/126665/htg-explains-what-does-bricking-a-device-mean/

My pc was bricked  because it could not find the drive to reinstall windows at all in the end lol.

I simply said dont mention windows ten bricks hardware it doesnt if you think it does your wrong.  Im saying you lied about windows ten Im not saying your a liar in general and you talk to me about takking my medication?  I dont use my ocd for a excuse for anything and Im not being abusive I said you lied about windows ten should I repeat it again.  Ill repeat it again windows ten doesnt brick hardware.  I would be amazed how many users join this forum see this and decide to leave because they know its bull**** (some decide to stay because this forum has good qualities thats why Im here).  If your hard drive got bricked its because it decided to go faulty on you or you dont know what your doing (I dont know you personally so I cant say you dont know what your doing makking posts on a forum doesnt tell users what that user is made of because I havent seen you work on a computer and watched you fix one).

You called me a lair when i know darn well my machine ran fine  tell I installed windows 10  on it and i got INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE error  were the boot failed off and on  it caused it to get a bad sector and fail.  Messed it up so bad seagate tools could not ever repair it.

Thats a fact you dont really know no one on here so stop acting like you do . Anyone that's knew me along time can tell  you i helped  many people fix there software . and most of you're disrespect for me comes from the fact you dont really know me.

Where you see has he taken his medication is in fact me being hyper sensitive I didnt mean it the way it sounded text doesnt portray tone of voice (thats a fact).  I use seagate tools to there not one hundred percent effective I have used them to find out if the hard drive is faulty not to repair.  You have tried additional repair tools right (chkdsk is one and its built-in).  I never said I did know I said I would be amazed meaning predicting.  Im standing by to see if microsoft tries to hook KBthirtythirtyfivefiveeightythree into the operating system (like a kernel mode or userland rootkit thats why I keep installing it that way if users I know get hit with it I can learn how to get rid of it properly).

Im dyslexic and ED but I dont use it as a excuse to abuse people  I dont really know . I took meds for it tell I overcame it for like 10 years.   Even some of  the staff here can tell you i helped people for years fix there software . I retried from doing that in 2011  but I still do my own software testing all the time even though  i no longer share most of it in public , Someone like me that helped so many even some reverse engineers use to come to me for help . I take the way you treat me as disrespect  because you really dont know who I am.

I rather sped my free time watching a movie or reading and doing my own testing now days,  You give people good ideas by helping out they just try to use it to build up there own rep. Tell the devs break it. all together for making it public.

Look once a HHD  gets bad sectors  in the wrong place there's not really much you can do with it even if you get it to work most likely it well get you more trouble again . Some times you can get lucky and format around a bad sector  and it will work for years it just depends  . I also ran Bad blocks  on it witch is like tools  like chkdsk  from a Linux  DVD  also I tried  chkdsk  and it kept happening . I just pulled the HHD  and put in another one problem solved  Im not fooling with that bricked HHD  anymore done wasted enough time on it.

I told you I dont use my ocd as a excuse for anything you sound like your a sensitive person its not my intention to be abusive for some reason you unintentionally hit wrong nerves of mine (Im predicting).  There is no medication for hyper sensitivity if there was I would take it.  I dont see why you would want to retire from helping users making users happy making users smile I have been helping users friends and family and friends of friends and there families for years it never gets old to me Ill never retire from it.  Im not someone that goes to strangers and abuses them (intentionally) you have me pegged wrong.

I had a hard drive my old hard drive start clicking on me (usually that means the hard drive is gone bricked) and I messed with it and it started working again my aunt tinas hard drive was bricked (so I thought so they thought) I put it in the freezer and froze it and got her pictures off of it (yes freezing it revived it if freezing hard drives is a myth call me a mythbuster) so I know what Im doing to.  I have done my fair share of reverse engineering with assembly language and hexadecimal (as a matter of fact I learned from a website dodel shared called the legend of r4ndom and his friends tutorials).  I have never hit a hard drive I couldnt fix and have messed with bad sectors and bricked hard drives.  You give users ideas and try to help them out and they use it against you or to build up there reputation you have met some real ***holes (I am a risk taker and helping people and risking them using **** against me is a risk I am happy to take).

I want to put this back on topic microsoft was supposed to put windows ten upgrade as a recommended update months ago I have not seen if I did something to block get windows ten app I must have blocked the upgrade and Im thinking its that registry hack Disableupgrade?  You apply the fixes in this forum this post becomes old news.  For your information I have installed all updates so if microsoft is going to change what I did Im sure a windows update would change it havent seen one yet.

Really i never seen you in the tut topics here  or the warez topics  i seen you in some of the software chat topics trying to give advice . Witch sometimes i still give advice in if i fell like it. Mostly i just see you in the news topics were is just mostly opinion about something some blogger writes . Proving  yourself by uploading and teaching people how to activate 1000s of apps like i done in the past and saying you can is two different things . Nothing is stoping you from doing it here actions speaks louder than words .  And tell i see you put those words  into actions   and you walk a mile in my shoes  they just remain idle words too me.

Your not part of every it forum on the planet your not the gatekeeper of the it world please.  I have proved myself in real life thats better then proving myself on a virtual message board if you need to seek approval to feel confident and know your good at what you do your not as good as you say you are (what do they call that passive aggressive).  I wrote a tutorial in a different forum and it got deleted and am currently writing a new one not because of what you said I started writing it before this (I decided to start writing it to help users out not to prove how good I am.  Like I said I dont have to prove anything to you I know what Im capable of and Im going to continue doing what I have been doing here helping users unlike you Im not a quitter.  Getting it back on topic Im going to find the registry hack for users that way if someone visits this topic there going to have it.

What claim did I make about something you proved years ago?  I dont remember makkking any claims about something you proved.  I dont fix computers or help users to be famous life isnt about money and entitlement its about living life and doing what you love to do.  I help users all the time and have a life and help myself its not difficult its like multitasking anybody can do it (well should be able to do it).  As I promised here is the registry hack:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/3080351

Here is a excerpt:

Windows registry

Important Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

To block the upgrade to Windows 10 through Windows Update, specify the following registry value:

Subkey: HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate
DWORD value: DisableOSUpgrade = 1

I made a promise and I cept it.

If you was serious about it as i was i use have to  help build the sites back and stuff when they made new ones of the same sites so people had something to download . It become a full time  job that i was not getting paid for, that's why i never wanted to be a mod. I hardly had time to come on nsane back then i was too busy . I'd like to get away from the mud slinging above and get back on Thread Subject.  Over the past week I have several people around me that have had their Win7 machines automatically upgraded to Win10.  They didn't request it nor were they given an option to stop it.  For the more experienced computer users that hang out here this isn't such a big deal but, for some folks out there, the learning curve is so drastic that, their systems are basically useless and may as well have been bricked.   I first read about this happening last week on CNET.  Claims of upgrade windows opening with only 2 options, "Install Win10 now" or "Schedule date/ time for the Auto update to take place".  Closing the window with the "X" box nor killing the task in the task manager prevents it from popping back up.  I think for the more experience users, there's a way to prevent it but, for all the "Normal" windows users, this is really scary...  It looks like the "Optional Upgrade" is no longer "Optional" for the average user.  Has Microsoft gone to far this time???

IMO, Microsoft started going too far with their Windows 10 upgrade "encouragement" long before this latest act of sheer bastardry.

What part of "NO, I do NOT want to upgrade MY PC" does Microsoft not understand?

Law suits, class actions, or a social media tsunami against them are the only things that are likely to finally stop their grossly unethical conduct.

EDIT: Apparently the excellent GWX Control Panel stops this forced upgrade dead in its tracks.

I am very serious about the work I do and I agree they need to cut the bull**** and let the users make the decision themselves (technically it shows up as a recommended update you can uncheck and hide the update same for KBthirtythirtyfivefiveeightythree).  I do find this recommended update situation stupid microsoft does kinda give you control you can uncheck the update and hide it they are trying to take advantage of the computer illiterate users as much as they can.  It automatically downloads and automatically installs on systems that are set to automatically download and automatically install it wont if you dont have windows update in windows update settings or in gpedit group policy editor set to automatically download and automatically install.
