Windows 10 adoption is slowing, despite Microsoft’s best efforts

Last month, Microsoft made Windows 10 a recommended update rather than an optional installation. The shift was expected to trigger a fresh wave of installation activations, since users who didn’t configure their systems to block the update would find Windows 10 waiting and ready for installation. New data suggests that Microsoft’s decision to flip that particular switch may not have had the impact the company hoped it would.

Three separate vendors who track OS market share all see signs that Windows 10 adoption is slowing down, Computerworld reports. Net Applications reports Windows 10 on 14.2% of devices, a 1.1-point increase from January. Computerworld’s own metrics imply that Microsoft has only recently breached the 200 million installation mark with Windows 10, despite claiming to have reached this in January. It’s not all bad news, though — Windows 10 is officially now more popular than Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 combined.

Meanwhile, the Ireland-based StatCounter saw Windows 10 improve to 14.9% of the total market, up 1.2 points from the previous month. Growth is falling off month by month, however, with fewer systems choosing to take Microsoft’s free upgrade offer.

What could this mean for Microsoft?

There are several ways to interpret the data. First, it’s possible that while Microsoft has now enabled the ability to push Windows 10 as a recommended update, it’s possible that the company is still testing the waters with this capability and rolling it out on a limited scale before full deployment. If that’s true, we should see adoption accelerate in the coming months.

Some users will skip the upgrade because they aren’t sure if its legitimate. Some won’t see it because their system isn’t set up for automatic updates. Some are undoubtedly skipping the offer because they aren’t happy with Windows 10. But even if we allow for generous percentages on each of those groups, they don’t come close to the PC market’s total install base.

Microsoft’s billion-device goal for Windows 10 has always been ambitious. While the company may get there over time, it may need to either extend its free Windows upgrade offer, or start throwing in other goodies to sweeten the pot. Free Office or Xbox Live would seem to be a good place to start.

Microsoft’s push to get Windows 10 on more devices isn’t just so the company can simplify its support structure. If Redmond ever hopes to have a mobile operating system people want to use, it needs to boost engagement with Windows 10 so it can leverage one ecosystem to try and kick start another. The degree to which this will work depends on how easily Windows applications move between desktop and mobile. So far, at least in gaming, they don’t appear to shift well at all — at least not compared to the advantages of a platform like Steam. Further investigation into the Windows Store and its gaming requirements is still ongoing.

W10 adoption is slowing? Oh gee I wonder why?

Was it the mass forced update that was stopped by GWA Control Panel?

Was it the fact that millions of savvy users (that are not morons) don't install BETA operating systems on their computer?

Was it because of W10 updates installing forced driver updates for your machine over the manufactures preferred driver? Causing errors and BSOD's for even the most savvy of users and gamers?

Could it be the fact that W10 makes it such a pain in the ass to change the default program in use for any un-savvy computer user? Say someone who just clicks "make firefox or chrome" my default browser (and not that piece of shit edge) go through all those extra steps that they have no idea how to do if they are not savvy with a computer? Wondering why or asking how or help to change their default browser??

Could it be any of those f-king reasons?

Morons. I know my way around a computer and I still have a hard time figuring shit out, and if it wasn't help from forums or here or people I know I wouldn't be able to navigate or do half the shit I want without using 3rd party software or forced commands because BUM-BUDDIES like Gabe Abru and Satya Shithead won't let me customize the O/S .....

Idiots.

Microsoft's  in for the long haul  now they got the lower market share o/s out the way now its Widows 10 vs Windows 7 ... And they claim  there going add a price tag too it the end of July ? And they just nudged  by windows 8x and its March already and it took windows 8x  years to ever get ahead of xp it was never liked by the masses . I wonder will they back pedal for one more year of free ? How  do they ever expect  to make people buy a adware receptacle? I dont know about you i dont even like free adware much less paying for it .:)

This is the key to the whole Windows 10 thing and why there pushing people to update so hard its not about holding the 1 one desktop spot  because the whole marketshare  for desktop O/S  is a oxymoron  . Microsoft is just competing against itself  .

They already hold the #1 spot for desktop O/S with windows 7 but not for phone O/S  and if they can make windows 10 desktop O/S succeed because it integrates  with there phone O/S  then chances are they can make there phone  O/S succeed . People who use Windows 10 desktop are just Pawns in Microsoft plain to control the phone ,game and software industry .

Using Windows 10 is a vote against legacy software and games .

You can for now  but  already  there uninstalling peoples  programs on updates it has the ability to remove games and programs .

http://lifehacker.com/windows-10-updates-are-deleting-some-apps-without-notif-1762347989

As far as games there trying phase other platforms out like Steam and GOG they are trying to switch gaming over to windows store . And Windows store games is cripple ware

Developers  and gamers  are outraged . Windows 10 Continuum for phones wont be out tell 2017   and they want everyone to switch over to there phones and the only way they can do this is to get people to start running windows store apps and games . I fell big changes  are coming to windows desktop to fully integrate it with Windows 10 phones  unless  they change there game plain..

Windows 10 update is scanning peoples pc  for programs  they say is old or not compatible  and deletes them this has been going on every since NOV 2015 update. After Microsoft gets its billion users they can deem  legacy apps and games as not safe because they claim this is how you catch malware also it will stop cracking too. Because anything that's cracked in  the sandboxed  part of windows 10  Microsoft  has in there toss they can remove it but there removing legacy apps already.

Anytime they wish they can roll out a major update  and delete programs . People will have to  reinstall a bunch of stuff  when they  do redstone update 1 and then in 2017 for red stone update 2 .  This means they can uninstall you're programs  and pull the switch on legacy apps on a major update if they ever see fit to do so.

Supposedly microsoft can removee illegal programs and games from your computer that link mentions speccy was remove and speccy is free and if windows ten supposedly removed pirateed programs and games speeccy wouldnt be considered that is a bug (that figures).  Im sorry microsoft is never going to phase out steam I mean its good microsoft is trying to create a store thats similiar when it goes to competing with steam there is no contest.  They must be making windows ten upgrade a recommended update in waves if they truly did that I havent received it.

When Microsoft owns the contracts for the games  to only be hosted on XBOX and Windows Store  Steam wont even get the games its already starting to happen .

Microsoft dont like Piriform products , Win10 FWC  and other stuff that can remove or block there data collecting.

Microsoft games I dont really care about there popular I dont think there as popular as some of the games you can get on steam and if someone truly wanted to remove restrictions from microsoft games they could.  I remember the video about a microsoft employee talking about disliking ccleaner and if they are removing piriform products Im sure with the right amount of customeers complaining they should stop (they may not stop now or in the distant future they are going to eventually Im sure).  I use irfanview to I do use windows image viewer to depending on if the image is supported sometimes images open up in one program and wouldnt in a different program.  I wont let microsoft push me towards a different operating system If I choosee to install linux Ill download it and learn it and use it at my free will (if god cant affect free will then microsoft cant atleast with me how much will power do you have I have a sufficient amount).
