@ Jofre - Never heard of something like this.

@ Tax (if I can call you that) - Like I said to jofre, I'd use it but I've never heard of this method before. Please do enlighten me when I get back

Its just add into the hosts file which is in windows>system32>drivers>etc>hosts. (You have to open it with notepad).

Or by using mvps, there is a .bat which will automatically add the list into the hosts file.

As the computer will detect the list in the hosts file first when going to internet...all unwanted ads would be blocked.

That is, the ads ip address would be re-routed back to your pc (127.0.0.1)

You can also use the hosts file's list for your preferred list of website by keying in the ip address follow by the website name. (xxx.xx.xx.x www.xxx.com)

In this case, your website will load up faster as the pc reads this file before DNS.

Do note that if the hosts file is more than 135kb, your internet initial startup would slow down while the pc reads the hosts file.

There is a round about way: by disable DNS client in services. (Go to the website to check it out).

My hosts file is about 300kb, but I do not feel the slow down.

But when I increase it to about 900kb, the initial starts up do slow down.

Do also note that Spybot also make use of the hosts file to prevent ads.

If you use Spybot and mvps, you will have a large hosts file.

Aha now I get it. Still not gonna try it tho :P ; Munch Beta is getting the job done. I'll stick with that one for a while.

If there were a thank you button I'd click it. Thanks

I go for "NoScript" for FF. It disables all the scripts on the page, that not only disables java, flash, ads. but is unique solution to stay safe from "clickjacking". You can easily enable/disable it on the selected page.

I don't have Chrome so I am not for sure what Chrome would use...I do have a couple of custom CSS files I found awhile back that blocks most ads from Safari, if Chrome offers that feature..

IE8 I use the newest version IE7Pro, I made sure I was using the filters and had up to date versions ever so ofter, I also use an older version of Adblock Pro ( 2.4 ), with filter subscriptions. I know it seems redundant, but the speed increase was worth using both together.

FF I use Adblock Plus with Filter Von Dr. Evil, Malware Domains, EasyPrivacy+EasyList, and Fanboy's Tracking Stats Blocking subscriptions. I also have a few select custom rules..and I use Better Privacy..Prefetching has been turned off in Fasterfox.

I also use ESET NOD32 Smart Security.. with active filtering and monitoring...

I have configured Sun Java not to store any files on my system..

SpyBot Search and Destroy.. this was mentioned before but it also cleans your system of several things that can spawn ads.. you have the Hosts file which can be added in, BHO, ActiveX, Immunization, TeaTimer and SD Helper( I don't use those two )... along with some of the stuff that it can rid your registry of..

I use Peer Guardian with a total of eight filters, ranging from sources such as blue-tack, iBlocklist, and Sourceforge...

Then there is my DNS server which I can set up to block various things..including Phishing/Pharming attacks...

There are still a few more things that you can do as well...

Some of the stuff I mention in this thread may seem un-related, but technically ( especially when venturing into places like the one you mentioned ) it is not JUST the ads that you have to worry about. The demographical study, and data mining can be harmful as well, not to mention a malicious site can code in files to be downloaded to your temp file areas outside of the body of a document ( why you kill prefetch ). This code entered into the body of the page can upload just about anything. While your protection CAN detect it...it still usually comes with 'the territory' in some really bad sites... I mean I have seen some sites that.. well it would just be hard to describe.

I use Adblock Plus and I'm happy with it, I have the EasyList USA, whitelist rules for nsane+site and many filter for a forum I visit often.
Joined this chat a bit late but I would agree that Adblock plus for Firefox seems to be working great for a number of years now. It is easy to use and easy to configure. I haven't noticed any slowdowns or crashing due to this plugin either. I generally leave IE8 alone though, I like to use IE to see what's missing from a page.

@LeetPirate, Even I had been using adblock plus, it's great, but found noscript better. Thought you would comment on it.;)

Unfortunately I can't comment on it as I have never used it before. :D

Just that I'm already accustomed to ABP and only if it gives some sort of trouble will I bother to look at alternatives. For me, this is just one of those things where it doesn't matter if I'm using the best one, just as long as the one I have does the job and does not bother me.

I will keep reading on to see what you guys have to say though.

Yeap, you are right......there is no 100% block.

The only 100% way is ........................... :sorry: DON'T GO TO THE INTERNET!!!!!

Of course there is no 100% block.

If you block everything, then you won't see the page :lmao:

FF sucks, I don't/won't use it so posting a recommendation for adblock + won't get you anywhere :P

I picked out my ad blocker already, should've had the thread closed a while back. But since you guys like discussing this I'll leave it open for a few more days.

Admuncher v4 Beta :win:

@heath(if ur reading)

i tried ie7 pro and adblock plus together, and what do u no,it corrupted my IE8(ARP.EXE application error and nircmd error).Tell me if thats even possible. If not than my freshly registered tweaks through "FRESH RAM" are causing problems.

Okay first what do you mean by corrupted? Crashed maybe? ARP.exe? .. uhmm is not part of IE8. What is it? Nircmd is a new one I downloaded it the other day but I can't even remember what it does. Enlighten me on these two?

I don't think it actually is possible, for those two to do that. None of the files you just mentioned are in the program folders for those programs here. So you might want to check it out. Make sure you shred them if they are. ( if they are not supposed to be ) Your AV may not have picked it up. Look and see if anything has been added to WINDOWS and System 32 folders to day around the time you installed. If you cracked or keygen-ed, and downloaded from another place somewhere you may have gotten infected.. but its easy to clean up usually.

FRESH RAM? I don't know it but it could be very possible that if it is a RAM free-ing proggie then it may have unloaded files from RAM necessary for those two to operate... but I would investigate the origin of those two. Be sure to check your BHO's and ActiveX with SpyBot seee if anything is trying to attach itself to IE8.

no infection, checked that possibility using ESS,Malwarebyte and Trojan remover(my favourite).Your rite it wasnt the poor adblockers,it were the tweaks given in Fresh Ram and my ignorance ofcourse.Anyways i unistalled Fresh Ram then ran uniblue registry booster and error repair pro,now evrything is back to normal, atleast it seems to b.

dont no nothing bout ARP.exe and nircmd errors and what causes them.

tnx again heath
