Microsoft Updates “Get Windows 10” Prompts, No Longer Offers Reject Option

Upgrade now or start the download and upgrade later

The “Get Windows 10” app that’s being used by Microsoft to push the new operating system to computers running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 has received another makeover, this time becoming even more aggressive than before.

Basically, if you’re running an older version of Windows, and you haven’t yet disabled the Get Windows 10 app, the prompt asking for the upgrade is now recommending you to install the new OS and even gives you two different options. But unfortunately, the “no” option is not there anymore.

The screenshot that you see here has been posted by PCWorld’s Brad Cachos, who himself received this upgrade prompt and said that although he didn’t press the small arrow on the right edge of the window, finding a way to reject the Windows 10 upgrade was more challenging than before.

This notification offered just two options: upgrade now or start the download and upgrade later. But what if you don’t want to upgrade? That doesn’t seem to be an option anymore, and everyone should get used to it, given the changes planned by Microsoft in early 2016.

Windows 10, a recommended update

Starting the first months of the next year, Microsoft will make Windows 10 a recommended update in Windows Update, so unless you specifically uncheck it in the list of items to be installed, you might end up with the new OS running on your PC.

This is part of Microsoft’s strategy of bringing everyone on Windows 10, and that is why it’s clearly becoming a lot more difficult to block the upgrade to the new OS if you simply want to stick to your existing OS version.

Fortunately, there are ways to do that and get rid of the Get Windows 10 app, and as soon as the upgrade is listed as a recommended download, you can simply uncheck the update and hide it completely, but there’s no doubt Microsoft will also look into alternative methods to continue pressing you to install it.

So sooner or later, Windows 10 might still land on your PC too, and it’s all a matter of time until this happens.

Turned off all updates in June, no problem.  I stopped in to get gas the other day and ended up making a couple hundred dollars rolling back the owners computer and the computer of one of his friends, and he gave me my gas for free too.

When I bought  my new windows 8.1  pc  I  connected  to the internet while setting it up by the time it was finished it done installed updates  to  update to windows 10 I ran a batch file and removed them all  and turned auto updates off .   Now i can just simply hide the updates . But if you reinstall windows or  just bought a new pc windows 8.1  what ever you do you need install it offline  and turn updates off . Really windows have became one big hassle  no matter how you look  at it. Before June i  left auto updates on and never had a problem. Now if you use win 10 you have to block the spies  and if  you use windows 7 or 8.1 you have avoid updates like its the plague.

Is there no end to the arrogance and bullying of this company? The only worse thing is send M$ stormtroopers to break into people's houses and force users to upgrade at gunpoint.

And yes folks, the worst the impotent spineless gutless media does is call it "aggressive". Unbelievably, that's the same media that roasted Windows 8 over what turned out to be two easily fixed dislikes.

Didn't one of the M$ bigwigs Terry Myerson claim that the most common question M$ receives is "How do I upgrade to Windows 10?"?

That'll soon become...

"What the hell is this crap that you forced onto my PC?" or "What part of NO don't you @#$%^& bastards understand?"

'Bout the only thing now that'll stop them is a social networking tsunami against Microsft.

Yes we know this  is coming if they don’t make windows 11.. people  who install windows 10 free once they need  to change hardware after July 2016  will have to  buy windows 10 because windows 7 or window 8.1  keys don’t work for win 10 clean install . The key is SID  dependent . Anyone who buys windows 10 are uses free version will need  to buy it or buy it again to get new features buy the time  windows 7 end of life comes October 13, 2020 . And even to get updates at all by October 14, 2025  comes you will have  to buy again of course you could just pirate it as long as they dont stop that  in the future .

The way it looks you may have to buy windows every 5  years  . Really it don’t make any sense to me because they way they have it listed it looks like there will be a windows 11 lol

People were on XP  over  a decade ,   and Microsoft  is going to try make sure that never happens again without them getting paid that’s for sure

There is not going to be a newer version of windows the next windows would be simply called Windows.  As for this get windows ten app I got rid off it and installed a bunch of updates and everything is fine look at the updates you receive and uncheck them if necessary and hide them and check back every week if necessary.  CHoosing not to install updates at all you put yourself at risk and if you come on this forum asking for help because a hacker exploited a security vulnerability in a update you refused to install after we told you to install it I wont help you you wanna play with fire your going to get burned eventually watch.

You have been drinking the Microsoft Kool-Aid.  I can tell by your comment.  I don't have updates working and you cannot hack my computer.  Hell, I can't even hack into it and I know everything about it which a hacker doesn't.  Not that they haven't tried because I know they have and they hit my honeypot instead.  So maybe if you aren't very technical or haven't worked in security for a number of years you might be quaking on your keyboard, but believe me I would never do something that put my systems at risk.  Then again, I don't know many people who have two rooms in their house dedicated for nothing but  computers.  I even had a 24' x 30' room built on with a separate air conditioning system for my full tower systems.
