Community makes us stronger. Ommmmmmm.

MICROSOFT IS OPEN SOURCING some more of its lovely code, albeit with the usual string of caviats and sort-ofs.

This time, it's the Javascript Engine Chakra, which is used by both its Edge and Internet Explorer browsers that will be landing on Github after Christmas, under an MIT licence.

The Chakracore engine and all the trimmings, along with the API that embeds it, will all be pretty much like the one that Microsoft uses, but won't include the crucial link between the the Javascript Engine and HTML. Nor will it include the link to the Windows Universal Platform, which is particularly odd considering how keen Microsoft is to get everyone using it.

In addition areas of Chakra which rely on COM ports, a peculiarly Windows-ien thing, aren't included, but now there's open source at play there'll be a new set of diagnostic APIs in the works, which will eventually move over from Chakracore to full Chakra.

Intel, Nodesource and AMD have already expressed an interest in being part of the Chakracore community, and eventually there are even designs on making it a cross-platform engine, though at launch it'll be Windows only.

The announcement was made at JSConf in Florida and followed up with a statement which said, "We’re investing more than ever in improving Chakra, and are excited to team up with our community to drive further improvements. In addition to the public, several organisations have already expressed interest in contributing to ChakraCore."

As well as the two browsers, Chakra already powers Cortana, Outlook.com, and parts of Azure and DocumentDB. Recently Node.js was made compatible with Chakra, and this opens up possibilities to make Chakra a foundation of Internet of Things devices.

Like .NET before it, Chakracore is set to be a full blown community project curated by Microsoft, described by the company as "a benchmark for collaborative innovation, interoperability, and developer productivity".
