Anonymous Takes Down Egypt Government Websites to Protest Against Rabaa Massacre

Anonymous is still looking for justice, two years later

Anonymous Rabaa, one of the group's Egyptian branches, has been attacking various government websites, defacing their frontpages to show messages in support of the August 2013 Rabaa Square massacre.

According to local reports, the Egyptian Presidency's website bore the brunt of the attack, but other sites were also targeted.

These included the Egyptian Cabinet's Decision Support Center (IDSC), the Ministry of Planning, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of International Cooperation, the Ministry of Military Production, the Egyptian Drug Authority (EDA), the Institute of National Planning, the Red Sea Ports Authority, the Egyptian Observatory, and many other more. Al Arabiya News informs that Egyptian officials say that none of the hackers managed to do any serious damage, and most of the websites were taken down by the government's staff to avoid other more serious intrusions. At the time of this article's publishing, most of the websites were still down, including the one belonging to the Egyptian presidency.

Anonymous Rabba has no associations with the Muslim Brotherhood

The hackers that perpetrated the attacks are Anonymous Rabaa, a hacktivism group that aims to get justice for the people that died in the Rabaa Square massacre, where protesters supporting the formerly ousted President Mohamed Morsi were forcibly removed from one of Cairo's public plaza, some of them being gunned down by the Egyptian military.

Most human rights group that observed the military's actions described it as "one of the world’s largest killings of demonstrators in a single day," but nothing else was done by the international community.

This August, on the massacre's anniversary, a group of hackers that associated with the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt had taken down the Cairo airport website for a few hours.

Anonymous Rabaa has stated that it is not associated in any way or form with the Muslim Brotherhood, and only wants justice for the people that were killed in August 2013.
