You heard it first from the Winamp Enthusiasts Group! Good News! New Version Of Winamp Coming Soon!

Hey, I was going to post that So, as already mentioned, the plan is to make Winamp 100% freeware again, which means replacing all 3rd-party/aol-licensed code with open source/free alternatives….

So we’ve started with core features such as:- mp3 & aac decoders (more details to come later)- removing ms drm support from in_wm (wow, heh)- cd ripping- albumart retrieval- OpenH264 decoder Maybe a few other surprises such as a new OpenMPT-based in_mod, and a wasapi output plugin…

I’ve also got a 5.666->5.8 changelog.txt file already with over 100 lines,so expect a whole heap of new features, improvements, tweaks, optimizations & fixes…. There’s still a load of work to be done though….e.g. CD burning – and Gracenote replacement being the big one,and plenty more (further news to follow later).

Alas, it’s still some time away before we can provide a public beta build…but I can assure you all, we’re working on it, and it will come eventually

So what can we expect from the new version of Winamp?

Things are still sketchy but it DOES seem that work IS being done on a new version. Here’s our summary of the above..

  • 100% freeware

  • Replacing all 3rd-party/aol-licensed code with open source/free alternatives

  • New mp3 & aac decoders (more details to come later)

  • Removing ms drm support from in_wm

  • Cd ripping

  • Album art retrieval

  • Open H264 decoder

  • New Open MPT-based in_mod

  • Wasapi output plugin

  • A heap of new features, improvements, tweaks, optimizations & fixes

  • New beta release within some weeks

What is the point to use such a player to play some audio files? What's wrong with Windows Media player/AIMP/PotPlayer/Media Player Classic .. etc...

Recently, some Moron (visitor) installed VLC on my system — that reminded me of how much I would really miss my nicely tweaked (and pimped) Winamp.

Winamp? But.. why? The dead should stay dead, and good memories should stay good. No need for a half-rotten zombie when there's already a handful of programs that took the legacy upon themselves and today do exactly what they suppose to do (and what Winamp supposed to do before v3), just A LOT better.

I've never stopped using WinAmp. I'm not an audio enthusiast so I don't care about all the bells and whistles that the new players have.

For listening to music, Winamp (with all the phone-home plugins removed) under Windows, Audacious under Linux.

I leave Playing video - ripping - CD burning - re-encoding to specialized software (VLC, EAC, ImgBurn, FFmpeg respectively)

<-- WinAMP user.. love the stuff you can plug into it.. Hoping they keep the Visualization Studio alive.. I haven't installed and setup in Windows 10 yet .. but I am still quite a fewprograms away from that point..LOL :) Yes I have been using Groove.. and XBox Music in Windows RT...

I do get aggravated at some of the WinAMP crashes though.. you do have to remember it is an AOL Application... :P Hoping they fix some of these things.. ( or I figure out wht setting or plugin I have wrong.. It has done me that way for years.. especially when loading a list of like 2000 music files.. and trying to run Visualization Studio.. happens sometimes...

Skins and Plugins are better..

I did try to venture out into the foobar world for a little while.. still have my setup files for it as well... Sort of looking for styling and smoothness in operation with whatever if multiple ways to go.. I .. other than these have been using Traktor as a media player..

Hoping for a good come back from WinAMP though..

I love WinAmp, still install the last version on my system because it doesn't have all the bells and whistles and it does a good job of playing audio files. Unfortunately the new version will probably be all f***ked up with unneeded bells and whistles just like all the other audio players that have been ruined in the name of improved versions.

Well you could reverse it and ask same question about any of those options? I don't really see your point? It's about preference.

..kids nowadays lol
