scottbidsay
Processor, RAM...? The settings in ESS can be overdone.. so when you have advanced heuristics turned on for all aspects, instead of just the one yo need the most, it will effect system performance.. there are several notes about this when setting it up... You should also be checking that your registry and system maintenance are up to par... Its a Dell Studio XPS 16 that was purchased in April. T9550 processor, 4GB ram, 500GB 7200 RPM SATA disk I would say its either your settings or there is an unknown process occurring which is causing EST to analyze it..I would run through your settings and be objective about where you include advanced Heuristics..and make sure you don't have your firewall on learning mode, that way you can set exact permissions and rules ... You may also want to make sure you are optimizing your logs..before they get to big, and make sure you don't leave you log files section on Firewall, because it will continually query the log and load it.. over and over which taxes your CPU, leave it on detected threats, you can use the firewall part but when you get done viewing it switch it back to something else. scottbidsay
I'll look closely at the Antivirus and various Heuristics settings. I tried the ESET Security Suite product but felt I only needed Antivirus at this time.
HX1
Well Firewall is recommended.. there are a lot of attacks that can be launched and several ways to protect yourself.. using a hardware firewall, like in your router is VERY advisable...COMODO Firewall is a good free one...I think you win either way though with ESET either EAV or ESS..but do keep in mind that there a lot of threats out there that won't be stopped by AV alone so do please give it some thought... Avonlea
I use F-Secure and it is very good INMHO. I would like to try Eset -Nod (are they the same thing?) but I worry that you guys always need to find new keys...with F-Secure i have a good serial number and it works all the time and i don't have to worry about any expiration date. scottbidsay
I run a software firewall on my LAN (router PC). I was running ESET NOD32 Antivirus until this morning. I'm going to un-install avast! now and play with some of NOD32's settings to see if it helps...

F-Secure is not rated the best.. but it works!.. With ESET.. I still use Mara Fix 1.5..( no keys necessary.. just runs as full version .. like the trial..except the trial date keeps changing..so you never ru out of days ) I tried the new Box,Mara Fix.. but I didn't like it.. I mean its a good fix.. but I think I rather like he simple Mara Fix...1.5.. and I don't use the license grabbers or logins.. they really aren't necessary as far I am concerned.. I get the same excellent performance from ESET like I have it without it.. but anyway yeah ESET Smart Security. ESET AntiVirus, used to be ESET NOD32 AV.. .. and Yes playing with the setting will help and Avast!.. are you kidding me..? You should checkout a few others .. for real.. scottbidsay
I'd never tried Avast! until today and I didn't like it at all which is why I sought advice about how to get ESET AntiVirus working and not hanging Vista Home Premium 64bit. I found an article on eset's site that had some program un-installers. I got the one for Avast! and McAfee. McAfee left behind a TON of crap everywhere. I reinstalled NOD32 AntiVirus 4.0.437.0 and so far, so good! I checked some of the settings but didn't want to change much just to see if all the crap McAfee left behind was causing issues. Here's the ESET article: http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN146 I'll post more results. Any options I should change? I think I disabled some of the heuristics but that's it so far... HX1
Well its not the heuristics.. just advanced heuristics.. its presents a heavier load ..see how it goes with normal use explorer file browsing.. if you had MacAfee still left behind .. it probably was especially with the system you told me you had.. ESET shouldn't present much of a problem at all.

In advanced options I have the Advanced heuristics unchecked and I also have both Advanced heuristics unchecked under the Additional ThreatSense parameters for executed files unchecked. Is this the section you meant to disable things?
HX1
Okay this is what I mean..What I have done is include an XML settings import for your ESET from my ESET..Save your settings as they by exporting them..somewhere to your desktop..Then import this file as ESScopy.XML...I have remove all blacklists/whitelist, and personal firewall settings...If you have EAV these settings may not be able to be imported but the rest should...However if you do your Firewall and oter settings may have to be altered accordingly..Also your IDS options may be different depending on your DNS server. My DNS server sends packets ever so often to update...ESS picks this up as DNS poisoning and ARP poisoning so it has to be turned off.. but thats it.. ( and because of this factor- my DNS packets - will not be poisoned or rather if it is not for long )..Nevertheless here it is..Right click and save the file.. or else it will be viewed in your browser.. box
I don't use any antivirus program because when I use it, it tells me that I have viruses. So I uninstalled it. Now, I don't have any virus. What about this: I think I have viruses on my USB thumb drive. Can I stick it on your computer to see?

HX1
LOL.. I got a better one.. this girl calls up tech support to get someone to help her with her monitor, stays on the phone for almost two hours trying to get someone to figure out why nothing will show on her screen, and says that something is wrong with her computer. Tech Support guy FINALLY asks.."Has there been any kind of electrical surges or sudden shut-offs with your PC ma'am?" She says.. "Well yeah, as a matter of fact we are in the middle of a brown-out right now.." .. Two hours ...I don't who the joke is actually on this time around... LOLOh yeah and you can plug anything you want into mine.. it will just loOOooOove you for it... I can't even put a disc in this thing with ID USB Lock Key...no (w)Lan support either ( Disabled in BIOS and changed several servcies ).. which could be a problem one day but.. all well.. Oh yeah if you do then ESET scans it.... when windows tries to get a list.. or it alters the log..

jofre
Replying to "Which AV do you use ? " :Really I don`t need Anti-virus. After Net, I can return to the previous situation when system was O.K. just in 3 minutes. So, why should I use an Anti-virus ? Less programs = Faster Computer. But this is me. Not everybody can do what I am doing...Programs I need sometimes , they are all in DVD.
