Although the end of Windows 10 support is only one month away, the operating system still has a massive worldwide market share, with Windows 11 barely above it at nearly 50%. However, PC gamers seem to be more willing to adopt Windows 11 despite its controversies, and Valve reports that in August 2025, Microsoft's latest operating system set a new all-time high record on Steam.

According to the Steam Hardware and Software Survey, by the end of August 2025, Windows 11 was installed on 60.39% of all Windows PCs that participated in the survey (keep in mind that participation is optional and participants are chosen randomly). In August, Windows 11 gained 0.36 points, further solidifying its first place among all operating systems that can access Steam.

Windows 10 is second with a 35.07% market share (-0.11 points), and 64-bit Windows 7 is third with 0.07% (-0.02 points). Overall, Windows is installed on 95.59% (+0.36 points) of all systems that participated in the survey in August 2025. Linux is second with 2.64% (-0.25 points), and macOS is third with 1.77% (-0.11 points).

As for hardware preferences, the most popular graphics card on Steam is once again the desktop RTX 4060 with a 4.66% share (+0.46 points). The RTX 3060 is second with a similar share of 4.62% (+0.18 points). Nvidia remains the king of the GPU market among gamers, with 74.88% of all participants running a "green" card. AMD has 17.32%, Intel has 7.44%, and the rest is some obscure stuff. However, AMD is doing better on the CPU side, where its market share is at 41.03%, while the rest is held by Intel.

Like one month ago, other PC components remain unchanged. Most users still have a six-core processor, 16GB of RAM, and a 1080p monitor. You can find more details about Valve's latest findings on the official survey page.
