Windows 8 Start Menu Shows Metro User Interface Creeping In

Microsoft has been slowly peeling back the layers of Windows 8, and more tidbits are expected to be revealed at Microsoft's Build conference this month.

Another day, another Windows 8 screenshot released by Microsoft. This time, the company has revealed a new Start menu that sports the "Metro" user interface found in Windows phones and elsewhere in Windows 8.

The new Start menu appeared in a video that focused mostly on Windows 8's treatment of ISO and VHD files, as Engadget noted. In the menu, options for "Search," "Share," "Devices," and "Settings" are clad in the white Metro font on a black background, while the rest of the menu uses the traditional black-on-white look of Windows 7.

The contrast between these two styles is striking -- and an eyesore, in my opinion -- and underscores how challenging it will be for Microsoft to merge its new Metro interface with the classic look. Microsoft should either commit more fully to Metro in the desktop version of Windows 8 or scale it back.

Start screen aside, the Metro UI also appears in Windows 8's welcome screen, as revealed in April. And of course, Windows 8's tablet interface is fully Metrofied (for lack of a better term), with big rectangular grids of information spread across the screen.

Microsoft has been slowly peeling back the layers of Windows 8 on its Building Windows 8 blog, showing off a revamped Windows Explorer and improvements to file transfers, among other tidbits. Many more Windows 8 details are expected at Microsoft's Build conference this month.

They really got to have a total metro design otherwise this is, quite different, from the rest.

For me, this Metro design sucks big time! So ugly.

Cheers ;)

I totally agree with you :)

When Windows 7 came out everyone hated the taskbar. Thought it was so ugly compared to XP's. Then you just got use to it. Kinda grew on you. Same with windows 8....we'll just get use to it.

This.. to me isn't metro... It is icons next to descriptors and links... on a dark background.. Want Metro integration in the UI? Take a look at this..

WP7 with Mango Update..

http://oliver182.deviantart.com/art/WP7-Mango-update-254866305?q=gallery%3Aoliver182%2F18058989&qo=0 - This is good still could use some UI points for working things n a little better and even some minimalization in a few areas from the Windows 7 Interface..

Google+

http://jaycee13.deviantart.com/art/Google-Visual-Style-for-Win-7-251661081?q=gallery%3Ajaycee13%2F13423832&qo=5 - Interesting trends...

:dunno: Anything else.. :P

I think some of this is like I stated as before.. things that are unfinished or is going to take more work to be something beautiful and accepted.. right now.. at this point .. everything I am seeing seems to hit on the eclectic side.. nothing fluid or coming together.. same thing I was stating as well on a few points of the Ribbon UI.. I know it probably sucks to whoever designed it.. but I feel there should be more work put into the design... even if it moves a release date farther back.. I feel like I am looking at new methods of use and available options.. but instead of viewing the suit n the model.. I am looking at the bedroom.. with clothes all over everything nothing matching and hanging from the lamp as well.. :P

It has a chance to really be a very refined and finished product which could mirror in later versions as the idea changes and evolves..becomes more efficient with the influence itself... but it shouldn't throw people like a reality TV Star who has to clean a port-a-jon ( used and abandoned from a jobsite for a week in 116 degree heat ).. if you get my drift.. No offense to anyone..

EDIT: If you look at this.. http://yvidhiatama.deviantart.com/art/Win-8-New-Metro-Start-Widget-255858763?q=sort%3Atime%20windows%208%20start%20menu&qo=2 It actually could integrate very well.. if done right.. and on top of Windows 7 .. is looking a 'odd'... BUT I can see if the design is finished and has more work ( which it would be ridiculous to even think that it is finished ).. it may not be so bad..

Removing the gradients from Windows.. is NOT a bad idea at all neither is going darker.. Think it is starting to stick on me already curiosity and such...

Well, not everybody. I liked it from the beginning. I even installed transformation packs on my XP to get Vista/7 look before those system went to RTM.

See I liked the Black of Vista's... but I hated the style.. Windows 7 was better.. and even yet still with all of these effects I can only speak of this from a non-Aero point of view. 7's was larger.. and one of the few things I did not like.. but I can make it smaller so that works .. while retaining the new functionality of it... BUT I have always used my own styles and mods to get what I want anyway.. it simply changes slightly from OS to OS.. The way it is now.. I like it and technically will not be .. too far off... I will give a screenshot if anyone wants to see what I mean.. :P using APPOWs Suite Style - Peek.. with a custom start orb and icons for the Pinned items in the Start Menu.. on the right side..

I read an article yesterday saying that since metro is mostly geared towards touch screen devices/PCs, it will be optional in Win8 as not to alienate people that are used to a gui based on the last ten+ years of windows. If I can find the story again, I'll link it. If metro was the only gui option for win8, I wouldn't touch it with a 10 foot pole...but that's just me.

Edit: Bwahaha...that story was here...lmao...I gotta lay of the weed a little.
