Whilst LulzSec may now have disbanded, the police are still investigating their actions and have now released a statement announcing they have arrested a prominent LulzSec member under the name of Topiary.

Topiary was named as the LulzSec spokesperson numerous times by several groups trying to gain information on the team. He was said to be involved with the attacks on HBGary, Westboro Baptist church, Gawker, PayPal, Visa, Mastercard and several government websites.

The 19 year old was arrested by British police in the Shetland Islands at his home and is currently being taken to a police station in central London. The police are searching his address for evidence to link him with the attacks. The statement by the Police also said:

“A residential address in Lincolnshire is also being searched. A 17-year-old male is being interviewed under caution in connection with the inquiry. He has not been arrested.

Today’s operation is linked to PCeU’s ongoing investigation into network intrusions and Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks against a number of international business and intelligence agencies by what is believed to be the same hacking group.”

First mention of Topiary in the media was when he hacked into the Westboro Baptist church’s website whilst a guest on The David Pakman Show. He left a message from Anonymous on the church’s website as Pakman was questioning whether Anoymous had been involved in bringing down multiple church websites.

Update: Suspected LulzSec leader Sabu has confirmed via Twitter that the police have arrested Topiary.

It is hard to comprehend as where its propaganda/counter propaganda or anticounter propaganda... until one is arrested!- he's good guy! + spokesman arrested?- was it not against international diplomatic law to do so?... that is if he is arrested upon as what he is told to be arrested for... we are fed so many lies- hardly possible to trust anyone, but definitively authorities here- not on a "clean and trusted list"

Sabu is nothing more than an attention seeking jerkoff, you only have to look at his twitter feed to see how desperate he is for attention and boy is he an arrogant individual.

Its not really in my nature to hope someone gets busted but this jerk Sabu certainly deserves it.

Wrong LulzSec Suspect May Have Been Nabbed

UK police may not have gotten their guy when they arrested a 19-year-old Scotsman believed to be LulzSec spokesman "Topiary." The website LulzSecExposed, which is run by LulzSec detractors and aims to expose the identities of the hackers, says it believes police may have been misled thanks to a disinformation campaign waged by LulzSec.

"Two weeks back, Topiary tried to mislead us with some email conversations to make us believe that Topiary is a UK guy named Daniel Chatfield," according to a post on LulzSecExposed. "We didn't fall for that Troll and then he deleted all his comments on our blog." LulzSecExposed notes that evidence it has points to a 23-year-old Swede named Daniel Sandberg as the real Topiary.

Further bolstering the case is this chat log, initially posted by another LulzSec nemesis known as "the Jester," which appears to be a conversation between Sandberg and another person about plans to frame a UK-based hacker who also goes by the Topiary handle. Police made the arrest on the Shetland Islands of the British mainland.

As of this morning, a single post was visible on Topiary's twitter feed dated July 21. According to the post, "You cannot arrest an idea."

All these people who love what LulzSec do should bear in mind that these scumbags hide behind other peoples identitys, how would you feel if your identity was used to cover their tracks.

Sabu has openly admitted to using "disinformation" to cover his tracks and as far as i'm concerned thats the work of a coward.

Just realised the above post says pretty much what i was saying,it doesn't change the fact that using someone else's identity is the work of a grade a c#nt.

Don't post pics/personal data on the web, don't open Facebook/Twitter accounts, don't visit their shady IRCs and you'll be safe. You mingle with the hackers, it's assumed you know there's some grade of peril involved. They mess with CIA and other US institutions, it's obviously they won't do this in the clear, some obfuscation/disinformation is needed, or they'll be in jail in no time.

I'm not a supporter of Lulzsec (or anybody else)... just saying.

Anonymous Suspect 'Topiary' Charged Over DDOS Attacks

The 18-year-old teenager identified by police as the spokesman for the hacking groups Anonymous and Lulz Security was charged on Sunday with five offenses and expected to appear Monday in a London court.

Jake Davis, 18, was arrested in the Shetland Islands on Wednesday. He is alleged by police to be "Topiary," a spokesman who did interviews with media and ran a prolific Twitter account documenting frequent denial-of-service attacks and data theft escapades of Anonymous and LulzSec.

Davis was charged with conspiring with others to conduct DDOS attacks against the website of the Serious Organised Crime Agency, a British law enforcement institution similar to the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation.

He is also charged with unauthorized access to a computer system, encouraging offenses and two counts of conspiracy. Davis is scheduled to appear in Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday where a judge will decide whether to remand him to custody or grant bail.

Also questioned last Wednesday but not arrested was a 17-year-old male. The Daily Mail identified the teenager as the brother of Davis, although police on Monday said his name was not being released since he has not been charged and would not say if the two are related.

A police spokesman said Monday they were satisfied that Davis was "Topiary" and that they are not pursuing anyone else by the same handle. It has been suggested that the real Topiary has been living in Sweden. Topiary's Twitter account has been inactive since July 22, when he wrote "You cannot arrest an idea."

U.K. police have made several arrests of people allegedly involved with LulzSec and Anonymous, whose online campaigns have breached websites including SonyPictures.com, Fox.com and the Arizona Department of Public Safety computer network.

A 19-year-old man, Ryan Cleary, was arrested on June 20 at his home in Wickford, Essex, for allegedly taking part in the attacks against SOCA. He is charged with five computer-related offenses and stands accused of distributing tools to build a botnet used to attack SOCA as well as websites of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry and the British Phonographic Industry.

Last month, the U.K.'s Police Central e-Crime Unit also arrested a 16-year-old last month on suspicion of violating the Computer Misuse Act 1990.
