nsane.forums Posted July 12, 2011 Share Posted July 12, 2011 Just a couple of weeks ago, graphics chip maker Nvidia launched the GeForce GTX 580M graphics chip for PC laptops. At the time, the company said that the chip was the fastest graphics processor made for laptops. Now AMD is trying to steal Nvidia's thunder today with the launch of its Radeon HD 6990M laptop graphics chip. Today's press release claims that the chip "was measured to be up to 25 percent faster than any other announced notebook enthusiast GPU." In addition to AMD's overall bid for laptop PC graphics superiority, the company also says that the Radeon HD 6990M chip is "a significant upgrade from AMD's current gaming notebook graphics solution, the AMD Radeon HD 6970M." Naturally, the chip has support for DirectX 11 graphics along with support for CrossFire which can team up two of the powerful Radeon HD 6990M in one laptop. It also has support for AMD's Eyefinity technology which allows up to six monitors to be hooked up to just one graphics card. The chip will also support AMD's HD3D technology. It's the 3D viewing tech to let its users watch videos and movies and play games in 3D with supported monitors and glasses. It's main rival is Nvidia's 3D Vision technology. In fact, Dell's gaming PC division, Alienware, has announced that the Radeon HD 6990M will be an option in some of its laptops. Two Radeon HD 6990M chips can also be installed in CrossFire mode for Alienware's M18x desktop replacement notebook PC.
